Jonathan King jailed for seven years

Isn't there going to be something incredibly creepy and genuinely disturbing from now on about King's grinning expression on his Top of the Pops performances in the 70s? The "come with me children" overtones have come to the fore in the most dubious and unpleasant way imaginable. What a stupid, odious, vile man: he's not the first from that era, and I think he may not be the last.

"Loop Di Love" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me?": as unplayable now as "God Save The Queen" ever was ...

Bloody Hell! I always thought he was a wierd'un, but...

Will, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

its interesting, how culturally relative these things are. correct me if i'm wrong, but if this had happened in some other Western European countries (spain, holland i think) this would not actually have illegal.

gareth, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, you don't hear much now of 'Do Ya Wanna Be In My Gang?' either, eh?

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

myra gale lewis = 13 when she married jerry lee lewis = the heart of rock'n'roll obv.

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend normally of these parts reckons, and I quote, 'young girls are the boys that men are allowed.' Especially in rockist land. See also Mr Shrewsbury School himself, J. Ravenscroft.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

heh: what are you saying Suzy? That Shropshire and Tennessee are peas of a pod?

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has anyone seen the spoof transcript of J1mmy 6aville on HIGNFY? I'd be curious to have another look at that in light of the circumstances. Prime kiddy fiddler candidate, I reckon.

Hello, welcome to LIBEL CORNER! Pleased to see you all!

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Suzy means that Peel took a gratuitously exploitative approach to young girls in the 70s (his "Schoolgirl of the Year" competition etc.). Which he did, though no more so than a lot of other British culture of the time did (by modern standards).

Saville libelled himself comprehensively enough in the programme he did with Louis Theroux, or so it seemed to me ...

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still, I don't think that should give him a pass and be regarded as a loveable old Grandad type figure while Jonathan King is thought of as a hideous pervert.

Granted, I think the types of music they championed might have something to do with their image too.

Nicole, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just as you cannot libel the dead I believe it is impossible to libel yourself as well.

Which Radio One DJ has been shot dead? The standard puts King on the cover and hides this tantaliser inside. (I guess vicars boy Tim Westwood but I'll be back shortly after further examination).

Pete, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's one very prominent name from that period (clue: still having hits now) who springs immediately to mind as the next big target to be shot down.

But libel laws are expensive fuckers so I'm sure as hell not going to name him/her.

Sometimes It Pays To Be Anonymous, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No wonder the Standard hid it inside: From BBC Online

Police are investigating the death of a part-time DJ, Horrace Pinnock, who was shot in London in the early hours of Tuesday. Mr Pinnock, who called himself DJ Village, has deputised on two occasions for the BBC Radio 1 reggae DJ Chris Goldfinger.

It is understood he was killed during an altercation involving 10 men in Wembley, north west London.

A post mortem showed Mr Pinnock, 24, died from a single gunshot wound, after the incident.

Horrace Pinnock?

Pete, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The radio 1 dj that got shot is someone I've never heard of.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's enough about So Solid Crew on this thread.

Vaguely Opaque Crew, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what of the So Solid Morris Men?

Horace Petherington, 13, Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No Robin, I mean that Peel was actually run out of Texas by the baying relatives of a 13-year-old he'd shagged while there in the mid-60s. By accident, of course.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Serious post: I didn't know Horrace Pinnock by his real name but I knew him as DJ Village, and I think I occasionally heard him appearing on the Westwood show as well. Bit of a shock.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy: ah, I see. Wasn't aware of that until now. I liked your quip about his education being a possible factor, though.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, I was just teasing Mark. I likey-likey diffident public schoolboys who hated every minute.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PERVERTS. There, that said: didn't that there Momus guy have a great rant about Peel and his satyr-like nature once?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He did...but is currently being poked with sharp sticks by specialists at the eye hospital down the road, poor thing. And speaking of poking teenagers...;-)

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Suzy, I just assumed you were making the old public school - sexual frustration - shagging young girls link. I like that in Mark as well.

Ned: Momus built his "On Gatekeepers" column around Peel. It was one of his weakest columns: I thought his comparison of himself with Stephen Lawrence was incredibly tasteless and his implication that I can't be internationalist and forward-thinking because I have been to non-league football matches was spectacularly crass. Apart from that, it made some good points.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(great sentence segue robin, he said dryly)

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(pedant's memo to self: never put two sentences next to each other when the first might give the second a dubious meaning, unless you make absolutely clear what the second actually means)

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always found him smug/ despicable/annoying and remember to laugh at his failed music magazine Revolution (sp) that lasted one week. Now he has lost his freedom for 7 years for being a pedo. Why only 7 it should have been life! the laws in the country are too soft!

He should also answer to cultural crimes of promoting awful music and boring the nation stoopid with his dodgy taste in music.. American AOR/Hard Rock/Soft Metal/Poodle Metal pop - total t@sser!

Remember that useless Entertainment USA and then the even worse No Limits with banal corporate rock: Europe the Final Countdown, Stan Bush, Y & T, The Hooters, Richard Marx, Gufiari (Sp) or something like that), Nightranger, Motley Crue etc etc all the crap he promoted in the 80s. What was strange was (a) King's music choice was complete dross - music that suited the most dullest 30s/40s American (b) No Limits was marketed as a youth show on British TV and yet the music was not youth oriented and was irrelevant and non related to Britain. (C) on cultural grounds King should never have got the shows on in the first place @ BBC.

Inturn he used the "80s TV fame" to lure young boys for sordid activities.

In the 80s America had Casey Kasem - and in Britain we had by default Jonathan King - two useless runts that knew fuck all about music. If here was ever a magnet for crap taste in music J.King was it.

I hope there a few tough old skool punks in prison to make his prison life hell, the sick pedo and a corporate cack rock fan - deserves everything coming to him. It's pay back time.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is a very confused argument, martian

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is crystal clear Mark - the BBC should have never have given King a TV platform in the first place - his music taste was crap and irrelevant to Britain. Without this TV fame he would have found it difficult to pursue his sordid interest in young teenage boys. The old skool punks would oppose King both on his pedo activities and his promotion of inane corporate rock music.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But however if he had played Ulver, and the BBC had given him a big-name job doing this, and he had abused this position to lure underage kids into bed with him, this would be better HOW?

(I realise no sane human would go to bed with a DJ who plays Ulver, but we are after all talking about preying on the weak and confused and easily led.)

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The music industry always knows, often for YEARS, who the kiddy fiddlers within are - and does nothing. There may well be a couple dozen execs with some guilty feelings. Or maybe not: music industry execs = guilt-free zone.

Same goes for telly. There is someone high up on one of the newer channels who likes Thai vice holidays and his dates are so young they've never had the painters in. Allegedly!

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why this british obsession with men/boy sex? The US had the MJ scandal, but that was it. Seems that this stuff is much more common discussion topic in UK.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh Mark don't try and out smart me: taken as two seperate entities:

Pedo activities = Horrible

Jonathan King's 80s Music Interests = Horrible

= therefore double repulsion IMHO

[Mark as your count yourself as an original Punk - your not telling me you welcomed the slick American rock as championed by King!]

Summary

BBC should not have been supporting the American commercial rock music played on Entertainment USA and No Limits - that King was presenter was irrelevant - it could have been anyone. [IMHO Jonathan King's- nature of his ego and OTT presention style would have been better suited to Commercial TV or taken into account his music interests then maybe he should have stayed in America and made programmes for the yanks]

and ofcourse no adult should indulge in pedo activities irrespective of music interests.

The only connection I made was that he used his TV music fame to exploit young kids.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling: partly it's surely the product of the redrawn boundaries — or actually a part of the process of the redrawing of the boundaries — in re the domestication of gay (male) adult sex as a fact of life: big big overdetermined fuss over where the line being definitely absolutely totally being REdrawn (eg no equiv fuss in re borderline activities of well-known rockstars with 14- yr-old gurlies).

Martian: I have hated J.King for longer than you have been alive (almost), but the argt that he shd be buttfucked the more and razored by "old skool" punk rockahs where Sex Offender B just gets to reminisce with them abt The Lurkers ("She's 13/I'm Hurtin'") strikes me as inkorrekt.

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I met King once, at a rehearsal studio in Acton about 5 years ago. I left our rehearsal room for a cup of tea and there he was! He was hanging around in a corridor - god knows what he was doing there. Our drummer said to him "Hello Mate, everyone's gone to the moon". King ignored us. Not his types, I guess.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's *just possible* he'd heard that joke before, dr c — 30 million times

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so what did JK actually do? can someone link a news story for me here?

BTW "everyone's gone to the moon" ist choice bei mir. that's a oo-ee-oo sp00ky song!

, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

According to the gaurdian he was a pederast.

anthony, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah i figured that much.

, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What he did: he would drive around Central London in his Rolls, trawling for boys. When he found one (14/15 year olds seem to feature) he would ask them to come back and fill out a market research questionnaire. The usual stranger-danger rules didn't apply because the parents would be all 'oh, Jonathan King, market research, cool' about it. Then he'd cop a feel etc.

suzy, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"its interesting, how culturally relative these things are. correct me if i'm wrong, but if this had happened in some other Western European countries (spain, holland i think) this would not actually have illegal."

Indecent assault is legal in other Western European countries?!! I think you've overlooked the issue of consent.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another blow to the image of the market research industry. Besides if all the respondents are 13-15 year old males the sample would most likely be totally skewed.

My initial reaction was along the lines of - yeah this is bad but v.hypocritical (Jerry Lee Lewis bad boy of rock special in this month's Mojo). Actually reading the details of the offences though this is standard nasty sex-beast territory - marching into woods and assaulting, getting boy drunk and assaulting while boy was vomiting etc. There's still room for the "what about rockers and teenage girls" argument but JK got a fair cop as far as I can tell.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thats what i think as well . Its the power distrubance thta bothers me .

anthony, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, issue of consent more blurred in the abstract than in this particular case: eg these plainly weren't rent-boys or happy gay avant-gardists who merely happened not to be 16 yet (let alone 21 = gay age of UK consent in the 80s ?)

below Age of Consent, notion of consent is formal (eg childs says "yes" => it makes no difference legally); however, cultural variation of said age DOES introduce strange random factor (though not i think in this case, which i have still not read up on much)

Note issue already being turned into the Question of the Predator = a specifically homophobic folk panic

mark s, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is going to be too personal but i will tell it because it seems to illustrate something . I was molested at 14 by a teacher. I also made love to a much older boy that year . I went all the way with the boy and i remember it with fondness. The teacher i remeber as a rapist . It confused me for years why i was shattered by the Techer and still in love with the boy. Maybe its consent and power but that seems too simple ?

anthony, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The teacher knew what he was doing was illegal and planned to do it (the whole grooming and secrecy bit, also I'm assuming he had power over your future in a more formal way). The older boy was your peer.

There was a pederast in my town who liked learning-disabled teenaged boys, because those boys were the easiest pickings. He would employ them in his shop and the parents would think he was doing them a massive favour, a leg up rather than a leg over. He was 'happily married' and high-profile in our neighbourhood. If you lived there for ages you *knew* to keep away, if you'd just moved to the area, you didn't. That man figured all of these angles into his procurement and was, as far as I'm concerned, a total predator.

suzy, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To answer Gareth's question King would have been as guilty in the Netherlands. Age of Consent is 16 and cases involving underage sex are looked on a case-by-case basis ie 17 year old consensual sex with 15 year old gets viewed v. different to 30+ man using celeb. status to pick up young children.

Speaking of which am I the only one who finds the following lyric, well, a bit suspect:

Ya I can see that you're just fifteen years old
But I don't want your I.D.
Ya I can see that you're so far from home.....
...But I know you miss your mother
You look so scared out of my man made bed

'Stray Cat Blues' Rolling Stones.

stevo, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

stevo, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But if the teacher had no power, Dan Savage writes about losing at 14 to a 24 yr old fondly ...

anthony, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

From the Daily Telegraph :

The police inquiry into King began in 1999 when a man who can be identified only as KM sent an email to the National Criminal Intelligence Service alleging that he had been abused by King almost 30 years before.

KM said King was part of a group of five men who preyed on teenagers at the Walton Hop, a disco and live venue in Walton-on-Thames.

Inquiries into the circle of men who targeted boys there are continuing. The UK is seeking to extradite one man, a former national radio personality, from the Czech Republic.

stevo, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony, putting the issue of legality to one side for a moment, the latter experience you wanted to happen, the former you didn't. As a third party, I don't find anything confusing in that at all.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The former radio personality they are looking to get deported is Chris Denning who has just been in jail there for abusing under 15s.

MarkS, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know but emotions are more complex .

anthony, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So true. Sometimes I think I'd be better off without them.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its thought like that which ends up with us turning ourselves into Cybermen.

As everyone knows, when battling evil omniscient robots, it is our emotions and irrationality which helps us win the day. Emotionless = overconfident infallible plan.

yippee, this is just what you need to cheer you up on a friday. A thread on the absolutely vile and unpalatable recipes of a top convicted nonce (that I wasn't even sure was still alive) and some screenshots of his current social media output (which seems to involve a lot of extremely dubious historical nonce denial).

he once put out a full-length musical film about how he was Not A Nonce, think it was called "Vile Pervert The Musical" - I remember

* A lot of it hinged on things like "ah the boy said my front door was green but actually it was yellow" and fucking hell I can't remember the colour of my own front door and I've lived here for 7 years.
* His case was undermined somewhat by a song he performed in character as Oscar Wilde called "There's Nothing Wrong With Buggering Boys"

we should be careful though as he will likely turn up in this thread or at the very least be lurking here. Hi JK! Your smurfs parody wasn't as funny as the one by the Barron Knights!

He released Earth to King in 2008. One of the new songs on the album, "The True Story of Harold Shipman" was about the serial killer Dr. Harold Shipman, in which King suggested that Shipman may have been a victim of the media.[136]
