Fernandes guitars w/infinite sustain are the new super bestest guitars? Yes or No?

Since seeing a few bands use these guitars and hearing about this Infinite Sustain thing only recently, it clicked in my head that the bands I saw use these guitars had unbelievable guitar sounds. Specifically, I remember watching Paul Leary's hands and wondering how he was getting so much sound out of some casual hand movements. I figured it was tons and tons of effects and really loud sound that I'd never have. Well, it might've been, but he mighta been using his Fernandes sustain, too. Looking on the Fernandes website, I see that it is mostly metal heads that endorse Fernandes, which kinda says something because they get the coolest guitar sounds, even if they DO abuse them to no end. I don't wanna sound metal, but I'd love to sound great(er than I already do). Who here supports Fernandes and who thinks they suck? I really dig this model (too bad it doesn't have the infinite sustain feature):

the guitar is looking a little too METAL for me, and while sustain is good i don't nec. want it all the time. i am currently coveting a silver sparkly Danelectro guitar as someone told me that they stay in tune remarkably well. but mainly because it will be silver and sparkly.

katie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Silver sparkly Danelectro does not equal metal? Eh? Ya, I know it's a punk look, too, but that's pretty metal. I almost got that, by the way, and then I really pictured myself behind a silver, sparkly guitar... too attention seeking, I decided. I got an SG instead.

As fer the guitar above, I realized just now that the pickguard has SWISS CHEESE HOLES and I really hate that. Besides that, though, it just looks like a classic guitar to me, like some weird limited Les Paul or something. I suppose you have a point. I can see Soundgarden or Danzig with it on. But, I can also see Sonic Youth or The Strokes with it on, too... without the swiss cheese holes, that is.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ggrrrrr, silver sparkly is INDIE not metal! the Fernandes guitar is just too pointy, that's all. pointy = metal. and you are right about the swiss cheese holes.

BTW did anyone see that story about the woman who allegedly got very stroppy in a branch of WH Smith because she wanted the free gift that came with a copy of "The Best Air Guitar Album In The World... Ever"? the free gift was an air guitar!

katie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, Paul Leary was quick with getting back to me. Seems that dude is always online. Apparantly, the sustainer ain't that fucking great.

Here's what Paul said:

"My main guitar is a pea-soup green '81 les paul. i have a fernandes of similar color that i tune down for "who was in my room", and another fernandes as a backup. those guys are sweet about giving me guitars. are they really almost $2000? my green one has the sustainer, but i don't use it. i like my free fernandes guitars, but i haven't used them as main instruments. the les paul is such a reliable brick, and the tone of the '81 is what i crave.

fernandes came to the knitting factory show and took pics of me with their stuff... wonder if they came out shitty or what..."

also Spock did you try out the Danelectro? was it any good? i like SGs actually, they are quite pointy but not too much so, still elegant and with a thin fretboard (necessary as i have v small hands).

katie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HA! AIR GUITAR! That's effin' brilliant! Too funny!

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know what you mean about the fretboard, katie, and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the Danelectros. They are easy to play. They're not super-duper thin, if memory serves, because I actually have a Tele, Mosrite and SG and was thinking it was thinner than the tele (yet wider, which is good) but not as easy to play as the SG. I think it's around the width of a Mosrite. I'm sure that doesn't help you, but it's easy to play. Another cool thing about Danelectros is that they have some effects like reverb built right in, which is kinda like infinite sustain on those fernandes, no? Kinda like a Fender Jag, at least, which is pretty cool. I dunno, though, when it came right down to it, I was a little sketched out about the cheap price tag on those things. I kept thinking, "Oh, come on, this is a guitar that would be good if I was a poor teenager, but it can't be the great guitar everyone keeps telling me it is..." So, I plopped down $1800 and got my SG. Smart thinkin', I tell ya. I always wanted an SG anyway. They rule.

Cool guitar.
http://www.fernandesguitars.com/images/dragonflyelite.jpgLame guitar. This guitar says, "I wear the same socks all week. My jacket is Members Only."

WHAT KIND OF SUSTAIN? I DO NOT APPROVE OF THAT WORD!

Pete, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three hundred and ninety nine DOLLARS! oh my, rip-off Britain indeed! *sulks* *sulks*

katie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Order it online... I've done it and there's nothing to be scared about.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about the type of guitar you play in your head?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh but i want to do the Waynes WOrld thing where you go about trying all the guitars and are just about pissing the sales assistants off to the very limit of their capacity and then turn around and ker- ching! buy the guitar! and take it home on the tube and keep stroking it and looking lovingly at it... BTW why are so many guitar shop assistants so patronising to gurls? once i went in to buy a guitar stand and they assumed it was for an acoustic - why? do they think i cannot ROCK?

katie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is nothing wrong with slightly METAL geetars especially my bass ahem although it is a BUGGER to play hrmph. MY geetar is especially ace due to its prior ownership - a shame I can't play that either!!! Although I used to be able to play When My Boy Walks Down The Street by the Magnetic Fields until they used a fourth chord and then I got stuck GODAMMIT.

Sarah, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I made the right choice. An ugly man like myself can stand behind this thing and look a litte better just by association. I like the fact that my guitar takes attention away from me... http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/Sg/img/sgs-hc.jpg

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But I always worry it's going to get stolen when I play it out, so it still makes me a little bit sad. :-(

ns: what are the negative connotations of a Members Only jacket in more detail?

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Members Only jackets are bland, poorly cut 80s jackets that had various straps and snaps around the collar, similar to a red-zippered Michael Jackson jacket, but made of a 50/50 poly-cotton blend, instead. They had stretchy wrists and waistes. They were tan, maroon or teal, usually. They just looked dopey and pathetic. If they still make jackets, I'm unaware of them.

This one actually looks better than most of them did.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tell me that doesn't go with the above green guitar.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sparkley silver danelectros mentioned here? How did I MISS this? Oh, Katie, bow down before the shrine of Danelectros, they are the loveliest guitar ever. And cheap, that must be a misprint in the price there, I got mine for under £200. (Except mine is green and sparkley.) Yes, they stay in tune ridiculously well. However, they have pretty much no sustain at all. This is, however, perfect if you want to play really trebbly piece-of-wood sounding 60s garage or Velvets sounding stuff. Danelectros spacerock exceding well, oh yes they do. Get one, get one you will not regret it. I must now find a picture of my guitar, Danny, online and link to it...

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is the love of my life, Danny:

Isn't he lovely? aaaaaahhhhh... Shame about the ugly cow abusing him, tho.

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmmm...this is the world's greatest guitar...a customised Sunn Mustang! (very rare! :)

Fucking cunts won't let me link! Try here for photo of Danny.

kate, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still not working, I'm afraid.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The more I look at that first guitar I posted, the more I absolutely hate it. That pick guard is pissing me off, as well as the dip by the tail end.
