Excuse me, miss - WHOOPS!!! I mean mister

I just found out that Vic is actually a bloke. I'd assumed that he was a "Victoria" because he'd been talking sensibly and rationally about sexism.

I am truly gender confused on this forum. For ages, I thought Jess was a girl until someone told me otherwise. We already know that people think Graham is a girl.

What are the funniest genderal gaffes you've made, either on ILE, the internet at large, and IRL?

At first I thought Vic was a man due to the name and then I thought he was a woman due to the things he said. Awful! But you're not the only one.

Maria, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pah it doesn't happen ENUFF to me: obscurity (and yay triviality) of gender = wot i seeXoR

mark s, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but if your name is mark it's not likely that you could be mistaken for a girl, see.

Maria, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

heh no i meant i can always tell but wish i made more mistakes: when i was a willowy teen i was sometimes taken for a girl and it was nice; on the phone it still happens as i have a "tenor" (= girly) voice and am gentle and fuzzy

mark s, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since my name is unfamiliar to a lot of people in the west, it has led to confusion a number of times online. Some years ago someone on alt.music.smiths said that I seemed like "such a nice girl." I used to get a number of come-ons on Ottawa's Freenet IRC from guys who thought I was a girl. I in turn thought Nitsuh might be a woman at first.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a friend of mine gets mistaken for a man, even though she's a woman, not that it bothers her much. The only time it has been troublesome for her was at the store that we worked at, she was reported to another manager for being in the wrong bathroom by customers. When women would show shock, she decided that she preferred just to insist that the women's bathroom was cleaner than explain that she is a woman. Her voice was a giveaway as far i was concerned anyway though.

Someone thought I was a girl on here once. And when I first heard my best friend's name, I thought she was a boy. Thank goodness it turned out otherwise.

Ally C, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i just discovered from the "describe who you are" thread that Alix is a girl. oooops.

i think Menelaus has been mistakenly thought to be a boy by some dunedin ILE'rs, before they were privy to the secret knowledge of her real identity.

di, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe I was the open-minded dope that thought all the Allys on IL* were of the XX variety.

You all know I'm a lady, right?

David Raposa, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom vs. Dave: FITE.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I originally thought Jess wuz a girl, too!

Nicole, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is going to sound really terrible Kate but I wasn't sure whether Vic was a guy or a girl (though he'd said he was a guy before and it had just slipped my mind) and that same post on the beauty thread tipped me towards guy! Why? Because it seemed so textbook, the kind of take on sexism a guy would have - almost always when women on ILE post about that kind of thing they've got some sort of personal spin on it to add. No offence to Vic whose post was a sensible one though I don't agree with all of it.

I thought Persi on a.m.a. was a girl initially, back in the day. Since then my internet gender-guesses have been 99% right.

Tom, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Persi I thought was a girl as well, his/her moodiness always struck me as more female than male so I was totally surprised that she was a he.

It would rock if Persi would post here.

Nicole, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i thought Menelaus was a boy for ages because it is a boy's name! then when her and Will started flirting i was dead confused becuase Will is quite frankly heterosexual! thank goodness it's all sorted out now eh?

my brother frequently got mistaken for a girl when he had long locks, and was most miffed when mothers in supermarkets told their children to "mind out for the lady". actually, i am miffed when mother tell their children to "mind out for the lady" meaning me. i am NOT and never will be a lady!

katie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am a lay-deeeeeeee!

katie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am sorry to disappoint so many people, but i have no current plans to er, switch

Vic, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Di was a chap - I think the first post of hers I saw made her come across as a bloke. And Menelaus, of course, but that became clear pretty quickly. Toraneko ditto.

It would make my year if Geoff was revelaed to be female.

Mark C, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oddly, I thought Tracer might be female for a while, and was rather uncertain about Sundar's gender for a bit as well. I never thought Persi was a woman on ama either.

RickyT, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark - i'm working on it, give me time.

geoff, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thought Tracer was female for a short while, and Toraneko was male for a short while too

gareth, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I fear I was and am ALL TOO OBVIOUS. Ah, but Good People -- you haven't been with me at many an eatery wherein the waitperson approaches me and says, "And what would you look to order, miss?" It's that long hair, I tells ya!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

which post made you think i was a boy, mark? i'd love to know! how amusing, i never dreamed i would come across as being masculine.

di, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone online thought I was a lesbian once because they had found out that DJ's first name is actually Darcy. I thought that also knowing that the J. stands for John might have given them a pause there, but no.

Weighing in on the "what I thought Vic was" issue - he was a guy (and probably still is I'm guessing)

Kim, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Graham looks like a gurl. So I made that error. But i am safe in the security that I am not the only one.
