Has anyone else seen any cow sculptures in London yet? If so, which ones and where?

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cows? eh? no! i have seen real ones in Bombay and sculpted ones in Zurich, but never in London! where are they?

katie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I've seen one in Clerkenwell and I knew they were going to be around for Christmas. They're cow sized and decorated by artists etc. and there have been similar schemes in Chicago and Toronto (only with mooses instaed of cows). They look really cool but I've only seen one so far.

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is on in Red Lion Square. They were supposed to be launched all over Central London last spring but Foot and Mouth put paid to that.

suzy, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bloody hell, that's a good idea isn't it. Great, a city with enough crap in it already is now full of cows with scribbles over them. Dammit! It's urbanism gone mad and I bet there won't be any in Brixton due to it's population of Young Scamps. Why can't we have DRAGONS? Why cows? WHY? What is the POINT?! I can see few benefits! Why is London getting them and TELL ME no-one is spending MONEY to get them on the streets.

Sarah, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When Sarah started her post with 'a city with enough crap', I thought she was going to point that the commented cows were in fact accomplished ruminant robots with an engineered digestive system which in the end, well, it just would bring more actual crap to London's streets...

Laetitia, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the POINT is that cows are lovely. wasn't it zurich that started off this "cows in the city" thing

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seen them in Calgary and NYC as well...

Bill, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jonnie - do you mean the one that appeared on the ground floor of Smiths of Smithfields? i wondered what that was doing there

michael, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This one is opposite the Smithfileds branch of Barclays - is that the same fella?

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is the point, and have the people who decides where money gets spent ACTUALLY spent some on some fecking pointless cows when underpriveliged neighbourhoods a stones throw away get further neglected? Stupid stupid stupid.

Sarah, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hang on a minute - they are moving around? Are they ALIVE?

Despite growing up very near Milton Keynes (not IN Milton Keynes, just very near) I have never seen their legendary concrete cows. Thank goodness London now has some too.

Emma, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, they could be moving around. That would be cool and might, just might, pacify Sarah ;-)

Jonnie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am in no mood to be pacified and I am going to come home and stomp and cry so so so THERE damn cows.

Sarah, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

heh, heh - sarah is feeling the guilt for eating at the Temple Of Mammon (ie. McDonalds)!

katie, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We had this in Chicago two years ago. An activist group put "poop" under them, along with little tracts titled "The Real Poop" with stories on development & gentrification.

Kerry, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The ones in TO kept getting antlers broken off by drunken pub goers so by the end of the campaign most of the moose were female.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And this year in Chicago we had painted benches at all the bus stops. Why?

turnermarkjacobs, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We had bisons and there testicles were stolen. It was classik !

anthony, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kerry's story gives me hope. :-) Seattle had the pig plague a little while back. I think they were pigs, not cows. Could be wrong.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
I'm still looking for the rumoured plague of sculpted cows to descend on Bethnal Green. Any news?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple years ago in Washington, DC we had elephants and donkeys (i.e., the Republican and Democratic Party mascots). This year we have pandas. Oh joy.
