Why and when did ties become de riguer for smart/work situations? Do you where a tie to work? Do you mind? Windsor or Schoolboy knot?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 25 November 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, shirt and tie for work. Waistcoat too, for that matter. Classic windsor knot.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ties make you look like you are doing something important.

Is "schoolboy knot" what I call a "half-Windsor"? Cause that's what I know best. A full Windsor takes up too much length. Most store-bought ties aren't even designed for it.

I think so, not sure tbh.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Me of a morning... "urrrgghh. Where ties?"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have always wondered about this. Is it to cover up the buttons on your shirt? Or is it to stop your collar coming undone? Why are they shaped the way they are?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's to give drunken city workers something to grab during brawls

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of "schoolboy" - notice my classic error in the title. Gorh!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't going to mention it, it'd be like calling attention to a sneeze :)

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, it happens

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

AS far as knots go, I don't know about anywhere else, but not even nightly news anchors in America bother with a fat, huge, wide, full-Widsor knot. The half-Windsor is standard.

Not to make that sound lazy. A carelessly tied half-Windsor will be crooked, so you have to get good at it, just like anything else.

You just made a full windsor knot sound like a vibrator.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha

More like a cock that always hurts.

Men in ties = sexy, esp. when you get to take them off.

(I don't wear a tie to work, and don't know many people who do)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(i.e. anyone can be good with a vib, it takes skill to be good without)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the suit as we know it becomes the thing i the early nineteenth century. It is a continuation of a history of formal neckware going back to the ruff and even before. It marks out those of influence and standing, those whose primary assets are intalectual, an indicator that they work witrh their minds not their bodies. As such its sort of a formalised version of the pimp's long finger nails.

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE ties - women are to boots as I am to ties. I have lots of them. I don't get to wear them much these days, but they're still great. Full Windsor knot is classic, it looks a lot nicer than that half-windsor rubbish. The Windsor is easy to mess up though - If you start it in the wrong place then it bunches and it ends up either too big or too small or too tight or something.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

schoolboy knot = half-windsor, yes.

what i want to know is how do footballers get their knots so fat? sometimes they are almost as big as their head...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They get their mums to tie them. prob.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

They buy ties that are eight foot wide. And made out of gold.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt got completely obsessed with this book recently:

It's a shame really since he works in a context where pretty much nobody wears ties.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

when i was home last, dad had to ask us 'kids' to tie his tie for the funeral.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are they shaped the way they are?

It's a signpost. "Look! Genitalia!"

OTM

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

so does that mean the shorter the dangling bit the bigger you imply your boybit? (cos you don't have to look as far down for it?)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ties make me look hot!

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer a half-windsor. I think the full windsor is for toffs and footballers (overstating slighly - I don't dislike anyone else wearing the full, it's just not for me.) I think it's supposed to be asymmetrical. Some days I like it, some not. I wish I didn't have to wear a tie to work every day. I don't like having an arrow pointing to my crotch.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

wearing suits makes me feel like I've done alot of coke. not in a good way either. they cheapen every smile.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

but that's the joy of ties!
they show the ladies exactly where to head!

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"to head"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I want that close contact with ladies who wouldn't otherwise know where to "head"

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ignoring the latest discussion - I love ties and have a massive collection. c'mon they can be beautiful and they are one of the few instances within trad. mens wear where you can play around and create a personal style.

I rebel against being forced to wear 'em but I love choosing to wear 'em
