Renting studio/office space

Before anyone says "just go to the video store!" and other funny things, let me ask these following questions:

Have you ever rented office or studio space, either for yourself or with others?
Where was it, what was it for, and how much did it cost you?
What else should I know about renting office or studio space?

I've rented band rehearsal space, both by the hour and monthly. Monthly was $500/mo for 24 hour access. We shared cost with another band. This was in L.A. (Hollywood). The room was fairly large, about as big as a studio apartment.

yeah i have a cool space on the waterfront in lyttelton,it costs $ 187 per month and i share it with another musician so it cost me $94 per month ,i have all these hassles with the landlord about the power tho.

my band once rented a hole in the wall for $300. the room was the size of someone's kitchen and there were rats, oh boy.

We rent a practice space on the fourth floor of an old warehouse here in Chicago. They're renovating the building floor by floor and eventually there will be a dance studio and artists studios in the building as well, but right now the 4th floor is the only one that's ready, so the rest of the building is an old decaying shell. The rent is $300 a month and we share it with another band, so our share is $150, split between three people. It's pretty nice, carpeted, can't really hear the other bands, windows that overlook train tracks and the United Center and that can be opened when it's hot.

I rent rehearsal space with another drummer, it's a pretty small room for $180/month, without day access. Worst investment we ever made, since I don't have any bands that need rehearsal space now and I never just go practice drumset alone. I can't wait until the lease is up in January.

You ain't kidding. Studio/office space in San Francisco is horrifyingly expensive.

I rent an office space for $500 a month. I share the space with an architectural designer. I have a water view and get out of the house. I like sharing the space because otherwise I go all day at work without talking to anybody. Luckily, my officemate likes it the same temperature as I do and generally lets me be the DJ.

our band rehearsal space is huge, has security, and costs us $425 a month, which is split between three bands. It's in bayview though, but if you ever want a blowjob from a crack whore, you can get one easily!

I'd move out of there to oakland where it would probalby be cheaper, but I'd rather not share with people I don't know.

I read that as $343.75 and was about to pack my bags for Chicago.

I assume that adaml is looking for studio space more along the lines of an artist's studio or filmmaking setup, right? Look for prices to be way, way over the rehearsal space numbers here.

I guess my question is: why can you not get writing done at home? is it the distractions of your house, the lack of privacy, the allure of the bed and bathtub, the television? I don't write at all anymore, mainly because I just lost the urge to do it after being in a relationship. I used to think it was that I didn't have the room or privacy, but it turned out to be that I just didn't like writing very much.

they don't allow non-students in there, or didn't, for a long time (this was a new development in the 90's; previously, anyone who lived in Berkeley could use it). Actually, there are probably a fair number of open areas in the libraries that you don't need an ID to enter (non-stack areas), but I haven't really been there in ages. The Morrisson Room is really beautiful if it still exists, and you didn't need an ID to get in there.

Yeah, there are definitely restricted areas and you can't check anything out, but it's definitely got quiet unrestricted spots too.
