ILE Christmas Party

Right. It boiled down to two possible dates - 8th and 22nd, both of which got slightly more 'yes' votes than others. 22nd = very near Christmas and so people likely to get other offers nearer time. 8th = quite soon now so less time to prepare and ppl might have agreed other things.

BUT in the end I went for the 8th. Sorry to anyone who can't make the 8th - there was no kind of personal weighting going on. Next thing we need to sort out once and for all is a venue.

I do recommend a beer or two on the 22nd, too, though.

At this bash the ILE Awards will be given out so what I'd like is for anyone coming to bring something cheap and silly as an award - and when I say cheap I really do suggest cheap, a pound shop thing or some jumble-sale nonsense, anything 'awards'-y. And of course there will be a 'Best Award' award!

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah and a time.

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

post-Camera Obscura at RoTa?

Mark C, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When do they finish?

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My guess is that things'll get going before that though but that the Camera Obscura people (which will be how many? 4 or 5?) can swing by when that ends.

PLEASE FEEL FREE to bring friends, lovers, gypsies, tramps, thieves if you must.

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they'll be finished about 8, no? but are you saying at ROTA (Notting Hill Arts Club) afterwards, cos it's damn expensive to hire and the people who run it are a bit arsey, i've heard.

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, not in Notting Hill I think.

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about the Betsey Trotwood?

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn you all to Hell.

Nick, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can we hire out Hell?

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[checks]

Hell sources say no.

Nick, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah, RoTa is arsey and also expensive. The Betsey beats RoTa, certainly. What about that Brick Lane curry thing we've been talking about for a while? BooZoR/Brick Lane --> depending on time booZoR club?

Sarah, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How many people will actually be going to see Camera Obscura who would also want to come to the ILE party?

Tom, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ooh, thank goodness for that, some of us have to schlep up to Glasgow on the weekend of the 22nd. For pre-Christmas drinks with savage celts, and erm, stuff.

chris, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also Tom's right, ILE Awards posse en masse probably won't make it to RoTa. I don't think I'll be going :)

Sarah, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And yep, I'll be at Rota, as I imagine will Mark, Madchen, possibly some others.

chris, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

okay, camera obscure? RoTa?

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll probably be going to ROTA.

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Camera Obscura = Galsgow indie band, last album produced by Stuart Murdoch.
RoTa = Rough Trade Satruday afternoon thingy held at the Notting Hill Arts Club.

RickyT, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it is a twee Scottish band playing a small club in London's Notting Hill!

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i liked my description better.

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Notting Hill Arts Club = overpriced beer and bloody awful PA in underground concrete bunker.

RickyT, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

come on RickyT! what about TROY for £1.80 per bottle... oh i seem to have dug my own hole.

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

not overpriced if you honour the Troy though.

chris, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

twee scottish bands -- what will they think of next.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK people this bantering's not getting us anywhere and i think Tom might be about to slap us! i like either the Betsey idea or Sarah's Cuzzah idea. what about you lot?

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Betsey gets my vote. curry = yum, but not v xmasy, and is no curry near Betsey? (tho going for Thai for work xmas lunch!)

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Betsey then curry? Or curry then Betsey? It's not like the two places are that far away, to be honest. If there's an alternative EG any other people going to the pub, I'd rather do that than go to RoTa TBH. Also, Betsey/Brick Lane EASTSIDE and RoTa WESTLIFE, I mean, Westside!

I think what we need to think about is space for all of us lot and also atmosphere suitable to conducting drunken "awards" ceremonies and that we don't get split up and stuff. I can't really think of many places centrally where we could do this effectively, p'raps Tim or Pete have some ideas?

Sarah, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I vote for the BetZoR, unless anyone's got any better ideas. Might be a tad late for booking now though.

Troy = a beer I will not drink for fear of ill bowel effects (qv. Guinness, 1664, Grolsch etc).

RickyT, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there is a curry house v near the Bets, the only thing is it won't be as good as a Brick Lane one. Brick Lane's not all that far away from Farringdon though.

katie, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

um, i'll be there, wherever "there" happens to be :)

carsmilesteve, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personally I'd prefer a drinking-oriented [*] bash to an eating- oriented bash, but that's just me, and as already mentioned I am rubbish and not very good at actually attending things, so taking notice of my opinions may not be useful.

I may be there bearing consoles. Well, unless anyone tells me they don't want me there, or unless I am as feeble and useless as I've been for most of the past year, in which case I won't be.

[* Although I should not be allowed to attempt to drink a lot, as I have finally noticed after a year - yes, I am slow - that being on medication which says "do not drink" and spending months trapped in the wilderness not drinking very much generally makes it A Bad Idea to resume your old vodka consumption levels. Like, an even worse idea than it probably was anyway. Sorry to anyone who had to meet me at any of the times where I figured this out the hard way. Sigh.]

Rebecca, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's all rather confusing really.

Confused Person, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On the 8th I will be reuniting with old school friends, Cabbage. I will see Camera Obscura at the Spitz with that Tompaulin band and that glorious Chris Leonard chap instead. On the 22nd, I will still be in Glasgow having seen that nice Belle & Sebastian band a couple of days beforehand. I shan't come back early because in a boyf vs. ILE fite, I know who wins. But I wish you all a merry Chrishmash anyway.

Madchen, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rebecca you silly, come out! Yay! Of course it will be drinking orientated but as any fule know, those who drink must also eat else SUFFERING will take place. And if we don't think of somewhere it will probably be BurgXoR King! Mmmmm spicy beanburger...

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Ver Lolleez are playing Xmas party thing at the Verge in Camden on 8th December, so early evening getogethers of drinking or eating are out for me, as we shall be in the ghastly hell known as SOUNDCHECKING (and possibly videochecking, if the night is to be filmed for telly, as some bright sod has suggested). You are welcome to come along to the show if you dare brave the darkest depths of Camden (and DG knows the Indicent Exposure people who run the place as well, and reckons they're nice). We will be playing a CHRISTMAS SONG. This is highly exciting.

As for Camera Obscura, I spend their last two shows being told off by their soundman, so I'm not keen on that, either. You know how I feel about wibbling twee. And I do actually like RoTa, even though the Notting Hell Arse Club is shite.

kate, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, poo, I'd forgotten all about that gig. I'll have to go to that, having promised both Kate and my friend JV (who has something to do with the running of that night) that I would go.

DG, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well all you indie kids... cower at the might that is the big chill also on that weekend. the night of the 8th would have been my choice. wonder if i cd do both, hmm...

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you don't go, I'll never speak to you again. Humph.

Though the 22nd is still open right now. Not like I'm going to win an award anyway, as I'm abstaining from voting as the nominations were fixed, so I'm not even stuffing the ballot box. :-(

kate, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i had a slight run-in with CO's sound man as well, kate. gav from CO is a TOP BLOKE though, and has fine taste in Vodka.

katie, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually has anyone set a TIME on the 8th? wouldn't an all- afternooner suit most people rather than an all-eveninger?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually has anyone set a TIME on the 8th? wouldn't an all- afternooner suit most people rather than an all-eveninger?

Perhaps we should invite Jess in spirit and all be half drunk by 10:16 am

(Am currently investigating train times for 8th, but probably won't be able to be there)

Graham, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate the nominations were not fixed. There was a different cut-off point for votes in every category hence you got more votes in cultural than osama did in hair but you missed the cut-off and he didn't. I think some of the nominations border on the insane but there was no fixing going on.

More to the point - yeah there should be something in the afternoon and something in the evening. DG would you be able to make an afternoon thing? Because if you can't make it we should have it on another day given that you, like, founded the board.

Tom, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aww, that's jolly nice of you Tom. I'm sure I could make something in the afternoon, it's only the evening that's the problem.

DG, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was assuming afternoon, kind of informal split w/ curry and then evening thing. NB, when I say "curry" now I'm just thinking of anything, not specifically curry. Especially after my curry attempt last night made me vom CURSE YOU LENTILS.

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was fixed, and I don't believe anything else that you say, Tom. You're just biased against me, and I know it, so I don't know why you try to pretend this impartiality that doesn't exist. So poo.

kate, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sarah, get a lovely can of lentils from the shop; the ones I can get have a light tomato-sauce base. Fry some shallots and some garlic in a little butter before adding the lentils. Heat, and serve with NICE SAUSAGE. You'll not vom.

suzy, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmmm, nice sausage.

Madchen, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmmmm I have some wuvvly sossage at home too... canned lentils... there is a thort. Can I also have lots of onion too please? Incidentally, I bet you can recommend a good butcher in that there London town, I should eat more interesting meats if I am really rocking this meat beeotch. Lixi and I found a HUGE meat market on Saturday before we went to go see some ART in Whitechapel (this market was near Farringdon), but sadly it was shut. I really need to get into this game thing. And proper cuts of meat. One of these weekends I'll do a really good slow roast, you mark my words!

(Cue rest of world: HA HA HA HA repeat till fade).

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Smithfields Meat Market? they're more in the line of selling whole cows. but the butchers around it seem to have some good stuff

michael, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can you confirm that Peter Lorenzo and the Guys Now! Dancers have been booked for the event?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They have a Simply Sausages concession at jct. of Farringdon Road and Charterhouse Street. Otherwise there is a REALLY good butcher on Theobald's Road which does game, good Cumberlands, yada yada. I am in Sausage Ground Zero here, with the Italian shops, the Theobald's butcher and Smithfield within walking distance of my place.

suzy, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate, I nominated you in Best Cultural Poster as it happens (or Best ILM Poster, I forget which). I'm doing the awards because I think it's a fun end-of-year thing - I only act on biases when something important to me is at stake, and really, this doesn't qualify. Believe that or not as you want.

Tom, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmmmmm, whole cow...

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can you confirm that top Columbia recording artistes the Simon Park Orchestra have been booked for the event?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about the magical stylings of the great Soprendo?

Pif Paf Poof!

chris, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

great suprendo = mr victoria wood

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i tired sending a packet of ass mucous to accept my award, but the post office got all upset...apologies in absentia in advancia

geoff, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoffrey Durham (aka The Great Soprendo) looks close to death if you haven't seen him doing educational children's programmes lately. I fear that a Christmas party booking would be simply too much for him.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, the chucklebrothers it is.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I need to hire a secretary to help me coordinate stuff. Not least my limbs. I keep pressing / instead of full stop. This is annoying/ wayward hand./.shit./.I will try to make the thing, but it rests on getting early release from work. Seeing as Sainsbury's appear to use the 'neglect to employ new staff despite undergoing massive refit and expansion and instead put all your staff on overtime until they a)die or b)leave due to stress' method it may be hard to finish early. But goddamn it, I could phone in sick for the second time ever and stop taking what is obviously shitty McJob so seriously. I love it really. I get to slice my own salami however I like it. Does anyone want to be my secretary. You wouldn't have to make me cups of tea, or anything, just tell me what's going on and I'll decide if I'll go. Incidentally, Sarah, there is no way that lentil stuff was curry. There was no curry powder or anything like that in it. It was me made curry. Did it look the same when you vomitted it back out again, or did it look more like proper food? You said it was nice at the time! FOO!

alix, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

IT DID TASTE NICE! Howevah it did not taste nice when vommed back up! NB I said tried to make lentil curry perhaps the lack of curry stuff and chillis was wrong but I am still calling it curry so shut UP, foo! Yes, when I vommed it back up it looked like FOIE GRAS wuvvly and the second heave looked like Duck A L'Orange, the third more resembling a hearty steak pie. Of course it looked like vom. Urgh the bile burnt my throat. And I am surprised you are not ill, your curry sauce was off. Perhaps I should have used my gorn-off very badly curry paste instead of throwing it in bin. UM no, that is a bad idea.

WANTED: one large, not hideous pub in central London for us to meet up in first about 3ish in the afternoon? How does that sound, chaps? Suggestions?

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm surprised you couldn't hear me vom, btw. We have very thin walls and I was HURLING, blurrrgh! (methinks I am losing potential dweem date votes ahem, I'm okay if I do not cook lentil curry...)

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dhal is one of those things that looks exactly the same on entry as on exit.

suzy, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can you confirm that top Pye recording artists Sheer Elegance have been booked for the event?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Rubettes are available. Drummer = only orig. member.

Failing that : Sailor?

Dr. C, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me old mate Scott Badface is the Rubette's drummer's son.

Trevor, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But can you confirm that top lovable '70s comic entertainer Ken "Settle Down" Goodwin has been booked for the event?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And we cannot possibly have a Christmas party-style shindig and not have top ECM recording artistes Tom Van Der Geld and Children At Play!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have idea coalescing vis a vis pub, but it may require people partaking of the Samuel Smith range of alcoholic beverages.

Upstairs at the Brickies anyone?

Pete, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure I've ever been upstairs there.

Tom, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sam Smith's... did someone say Sam Smith's? Ooooh i'm there!

katie, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not the room of Barquentine is it?

RickyT, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

line up the bud for me katie

mark s, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you do mean Bud-VAR don't you Mark S??

katie, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sadly, he doesn't. In Mark.S's world, it is tasteless chemical tat = it is potable.

Nick, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm, Mark S = the Hayley Mills of beer drinkers

chris, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hurrah! nicest thing anyone's evah said abt since, well, rainy and ned and jess yesterday (yesterday = anag of rainy/ned/jess hurrah)

mark s, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can make it if someone can give me lodgings for the night. Alix, Mark and Tom will testify (perhaps grudgingly) that I am housetrained, polite and won't rob stuff, unless it's particularly shiny. Anyone?

Graham, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
