People who start threads with "I don't give a shit"

Well then why fucking bother asking the question?

That whole "don't give a fuck" attitude stinXoR. While lots of life's little joys require decisions made on a purely self-interested level, lots of them DON'T - they affect other people, directly or indirectly, and every time you put someone out through thoughtlessness (obviously I don't mean when you have a choice between something that'll impact equally on you and them - unless you're Jesus you'll more than likely look after number one) you are being a prize prick and you should be ashamed of yourself.

This is particularly relevant to those people who think life has treated them unfairly and rail against it without a thought for the consequences.

Vic - I didn't have a problem with your question - I have chosen to see it as a quantitative, disinterested query and not a dig at fat people. I just thought your first line was shit.

I don't really get what's upsetting you Mark. Is it people who have an air of not caring about how what they say might affect other people?

Samantha, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Samantha, that's a big part of it. But it's also like saying "I want to put across my opinion, but I don't want to have to listen to it debated or deconstructed". Oh and being rude about it at the same time.

When it comes to my own opinions, I suppose I don't deeply care what many people think, particularly somewhere like ILE because I know so few of you to any real extent. But at the same time I want to be liked. I want to give people happiness, I want to add to their lives as much as I want the fact they like me to make me feel good about myself.

I love reading Ned's posts, for example, because they're good- natured, funny, informative and he's always willing to back up his arguments. Some others annoy me, not because the points they're making are difficult, reactionary, vulgar whatever, but because it's evident they're declaiming a statement with zero desire to hear anyone else's views.

It's all about the rules of community. These things are fucking difficult to keep going, and there are rules, actual and virtual about how we behave. To me, debate is an essential. Christ, that's why we're all here. To refuse to listen to other people's responses to something you've just posited seems philosophically dead wrong.

Does that make any more sense? I fear it may not.

Mark C, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

p.s. when I said other people annoy me, I can't thinking of a single ILE poster who falls into this cataegory. FWIW.

Mark C, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm a defensive coward, that's all there is to it, I suppose.

I wish I could spend more time analysing but I have to start working on something for now

, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love reading Ned's posts, for example, because they're good- natured, funny, informative and he's always willing to back up his arguments.

What the FUCK do you mean? ;-) More seriously -- well, gosh, thanks, but I think Mark S is the real king of all those qualities in one place. I really wouldn't worry about it too much, what you were mentioning at the top, just seems like a random figure of speech to me.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

!! Everybody duck! The Kaiser's gone MENTAL!!

the pinefox, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I understand Mark. I think to some extent the posts that come off that way might just be an attempt to avoid the thread mutation that can happen around controversial topics. People seem to fall into discussing the controversy of a certain post rather than discussing whatever the post brought up to begin with.

(also I agree with you about Ned that's why I nominated him for nicest poster.)

Samantha, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

are you kidding?? ned's the king of "i like what i like, and i donts what i dont. ::shrug::" *that's* a defense? ;)

jess, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fiddle on you, Jess. That's the *core* of my approach, but it doesn't explain the detailed appreciations or condemnations. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus, STOP WITH THE WINKING!!! ;) ;) ;)

OK. I just needed to get that off my chest. Continue on.

David Raposa, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're asking me, as Jesus, to stop with the winking. This can be done.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THY WILL BE DONE.

;)

Jes(u)s, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

;( = thom yorke ?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

IMPOSTER!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ON YOUR BELLY WOOOOOOOOOOOORM.

Jes(u)s, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mitch - are you suggesting Thom Yorke represents 'tongue in cheek melancholy'? I think of Radiohead as representing 'prog rock Massive Attack.' Symbolised by $$

maryann, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think that mitch was suggesting that the blinky frown looks like dour thom yorke, he of the ambassadors for the lazy eye. but hey, whadda i know.

jess, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh I forgot, that lazy eye is the best thing about Radiohead

maryann, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, the answer is.... THE LAZY EYE! Though can you elaborate on the $$ = prog. massive attack thing Maryann, i don't think i understand it.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

massive attack prog rock is redundant.

tom yorke is the steven tyler of the lazy eye. rowr.

jess, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what if someone was starting a thread about constipation?

I'm sorry!! *hangs head in shame*

james, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Use of pedals/drones to establish key and then boring ripped-off classical melodies in a non-aeolian/ionian mode over the top is a paint by numbers way to create an accessible but strange/intelligent sounding music (prog massive attack style). Path to $$ in the non- mainstream niche?

maryann, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

methinks this deserves a thread of its own.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll give it a try and tell you "yes" when I get rich.

Maria, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and Maryann wants royalties.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if i'm rich, maryann can have them.

Maria, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually i can take over this dying thread at any time since it's named after and exists because of MEEH haha

Vic, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aaaarrgh! The rules of community! Taliban a go go!!

Oh no! MC2 wants ILx to be a robust, sober forum wherein members of said community can raise sundry key issues which have been hitherto unjustly excluded from the debate!

For Chrissakes quit whining. Why, when there are literally MILLIONS of dull, overly verbose, indigestible, exquisitely balanced, polemic- free chatrooms and message boards across the web which will allow you the opportunity to engage in meaningful and rational debate, do a bunch of late-starting do-gooders want to have a go at the 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of boards which do things differently - like these ones? ILx should be about COLOUR, about ARGUMENT, about CHALLENGING EVERY SINGLE BELIEF AND IDLE PREJUDICE IN ONE'S OWN HUMANITY AND THEREFORE ENLARGING IT, and above everything about ENTERTAINMENT.

You know, I really feel like starting a mock message board along the lines of "I Love Raising Key Issues Thus Far Criminally Omitted From The Debate" just to see how boring and lifeless it would be.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For Chrissakes quit whining.

yu talkin' ta me ?

Vic, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well if this board, since its all about me, whining is allowed : ) but i guess mark c was just angry at the way i phrased my Q

Vic, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MC1,

Well duh! Have another look at what I was saying - "COLOUR, about ARGUMENT, about CHALLENGING EVERY SINGLE BELIEF AND IDLE PREJUDICE IN ONE'S OWN HUMANITY AND THEREFORE ENLARGING IT, and above everything about ENTERTAINMENT" is the whole fucking point!

I liked the "late-starting do-gooders" bit, though. A well-thought out point that needed to be said.
