Robbie Fowler to Leeds for £11m or so. Major Merseyside hero departure. Significance in contemporary Scouse iconography?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or: who loses, who gains?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We'll see at the end of the season I guess - since I think it will be these two battling for top of the table honours.

Fowler & David O'Leary could be funny.

Pete, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Fowler has had his time at Liverpool and as a fan I don't think it's a big loss. However I am sad to see him go since he was one of the favourite players back when he was scoring goals and I was 12 or whatever and more interested than I am now. I think he'll do well at Leeds. I don't think he was ever going to come back to form at Liverpool.

Ronan, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who cares? They both hate Man Utd and Fowler grew up as an Everton fan anyway. If I were Fowler I'd be fed up of being usurped as wonderkid so overwhelmingly so I'm surprised he hasn't left sooner.

Nick, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was going to post a similar thread myself but didn't know what to say, so I'll just ramble as usual. Robbie Fowler has been Liverpool's top striker (until the emergence of Owen) throughout a very barren patch for the Reds, yet still he shone. However, I did at times become sick of defending him, for his indiscretions and his loss of form recently. He seems a lot more fitful now, one moment of genius is bracketed by long periods of inactivity, for example the goal against Birmingham in the Wothy cup final last year.

Robbie was (and still can be) great but like Ronan said his time had come at Liverpool, his unsettledness was in danger of spreading through the squad at a time when it's at it's most cohesive for a long time.

Fare thee well young Robbie, good luck, you'll still get a great reception when you come back to Anfield.

But for now, Liverpool must sign Trezeguet and put him up front with Owen, Litmanen playing just behind, then I'll purrrrrr with delight.

chris, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a relationship with Liverpool like most people have with love. Every now and again you start believing again and that's when your hopes get hit the hardest. Like this season, we really better win the league.

Ronan, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No chance of Trezeguet, maybe Gomes or that Czech chap. I think Fowler will be great for Leeds, even if it just acts to spark up Keane and Viduka.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Horrible fuckin Dwight Yorke rumour at the weekend. Dwight Yorke?? That must be lies, they'd never sign him. Liverpool I mean.

Ronan, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Czech chap Jonnie speaks of is of course "wonderkid" Milan Baros, who will join Liverpool as soon as he plays another game for the Czech Republic thus qualifying for his work permit. Hmmm, he is unproven at the highest level though which is worrying although he's replaced Koller in the last few games for the national team (fat lot it did them though).

chris, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and fret not Ronan, Dwight "shagger" Yorke will not be joining Liverpool, the rumour started because his agent was spotted leaving Anfield, his agent also happens to represent Jamie Redknap who is currently negotiating a new contract.

chris, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That bitch Jordan, just now she turns Yorkie into a talentless loser, only weeks after doing the same to Dane Bowers.......oh wait.

Ronan, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are some players that you'll forever associate with one team irrespective of where they move later on in their careers, and the Fowler/Liverpool combination is one of them.

His goalscoring record is phenomenal and virtually unparalleled (171 goals in 330 games, or something). I only hope he doesn't go from warming the bench at Anfield to warming the bench at Elland Road.

Trevor, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still think Fowler's greatest moment was the line-snorting bit.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was a great footballing moment at Upton Park a couple of weeks back (hard to believe, I know!). The now famous-for-all-the-wrong- reasons Frank McAvennie came on at half time to pull out the winning tickets for the prize draw. And what was the song that played over the PA system immediately following his departure? "Because I Got High" by Afroman.

Trevor, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris, you're a Chesterfield fan. What's all this Liverpool = us nonsense?

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought you supported Barcelona?

Jonnie, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh that old chestnut's back is it? Just as well my flatmate's in Thailand or he'd be joining in too. Explanation of my football allegiance can be found on another thread, my archivist Mr Dastoor hopefully will be able to point you in the right direction.

chris, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I couldn't find it so I'll tell again. I first started supporting Liverpool when I was very wee and they were the first team I saw play in red (thank goodness it wasn't Man U) and, as red was my favourite colour at the time, I supported Liverpool. As I got a little older and moved to Chesterfield from Dronfield which is almost Yorkshire, I realised that I should support my local team, however by that time I couldn't leave Liverpool behind. So I support both, it can be twice the fun of a weekend, but also twice as bad as for others.

The Barca thing just comes out cos I think they're class and very cool.

chris, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Fowler and Leeds could well be a match made in heaven, but I'll admit I'd have been happier to see Leeds purchase a really creative midfielder to help their collection of wingers / runners tick.

Fowler's departure is the very end of the Liverpool Spice Boys, isn't it (unless you count Redknapp who was always a good boy really and married and living in Bournemouth)?

I liked his support the dockers shirt (even though the fact it was a CK pastiche was kind of ironic, more politics in football please) but I haven't forgiven him the homophobia.

MarkC, you've a nerve calling Cabbage on being a fan of more than one team, since you seem to support more clubs than anyone I've ever met.

Tim, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh!

Mr Hopkins makes good points.

I was also pondering a thread on "Alan Smith: Beautiful Sinner".

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The now famous-for-all-the-wrong- reasons Frank McAvennie came on at half time to pull out the winning tickets for the prize draw. And what was the song that played over the PA system immediately following his departure? "Because I Got High" by Afroman."

Another famous incident of this type with a Leeds-Liverpool theme: late-60s top-of-the-table clash, Gary Sprake chucks the ball into his own net - Anfield PA plays Mel Torme's "Careless Hands" at half- time. Scouse wit, that.

Meanwhile, with £11m, Leeds secure their first title since '92. I'm very pleased.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was McMannaman who had the dockers shirt. It was my reason for thinking he'd never fit in at Real Madrid. It looks like I was wrong on both counts.

Chris, the only cool thing about Barca is those gold lamé tracksuits they're using this year.

Peter Miller, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both Macca and Fowler wore the dockers t-shirts (and me) but for some reason it was Fowler that got in hot water for it. Fifa declared that politics had no place in football! wtf?????? it was a beautiful moment from the chaps.

Peter, Barca will always be cool cos they had Cruijff, and now they have the little Rabbit, but they don't play him enough.

BTW what are my chances of getting a ticket for the Barca vs Espanyol derby on the 5th of May?

chris, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree that Cruyff will always be the epitome of cool, but he seems to have been buried and a huge motorway built over the top of him by the Barca top brass. Last week he played in a veteran's world championship (sample match- Barcelona vs Russia) but silly me didn't know it was on. The little rabbit looks absolutley gorgeous in gold lamé, I think that's why they keep him on the bench so much.

I'm not sure about the ticket situation, they don't put very many on sale, but it shouldn't be that difficult (famous last words). I will investigate to the best of my abilities.

Peter Miller, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Peter, I've only been to the Camp Nou when it was half full (well, still 55000 people but you know what I mean) for Barca vs Oviedo, I want to go when there's a bloody good crowd there.

chris, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>> Meanwhile, with £11m, Leeds secure their first title since '92. I'm very pleased.

I'm not. I HATE Leeds.

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not crash hot on Leeds either after they got Spurs into loads of trouble with the FA two seasons back. It's always fun to watch them kick the shit out of Chelsea though - I know, I know, double standards, but what the heck, it's football. I also think Alan Smith is great, the type of player that if he was in your team you would absolutely adore. And he wears lipstick like some mad crewcutted Robert Smith with a short temper and pointy elbows.

Jonnie, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
ha, Fowler rejects Man City move !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

And how is this "ha" exactly?

Tag, Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Tag, Martian was probably hoping Pompey wouldn't be the only team in the Premiership next season based around players whose best is long past.

Sorry DJM.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm, so who are the mysterious second club putting in a bid?

chris (chris), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

because he made a fool of himself after going through all the negotiations and medical, to change his mind at the last moment

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a mysterious second club?

I'm glad you think he made a fool of himself, Martian, but I doubt my red neighbours will see it that way.

Tag, Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a mysterious second club?

Yes rumours of a club, not far from Man City - and it's not Stockport or Oldham !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

or Rochdale or Bury or Bolton

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

just. don't. say. it.

chris (chris), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be grebt in lots of ways.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i hear fergie is looking for a new striker...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

the sky will fall on our heads, mark my words

chris (chris), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm...those rumours have surfaced from time to time. Let's face it -his statement about preferring to stay with a club who didn't seem to bothered about letting him go, with no guarantee of 1st team football don't hold much water. Either that or he failed the medical and it's all been hushed up (no, I don't believe it either).

Tag, Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Might he have decided that he didn't fancy MCFC enough to take the drop in wages (suggested to be around £8K p.w.?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man, Fowler lining up for United, and Everton ahead of the Reds... please give me the e-mail address of every Liverpool fan ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

fowler'd only have ended up on the bench behind THE GOAT. i believe the medical conspiracy though

zemko (bob), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

united have better options at those prices anyway: eidur gudjohnsen for one. ronaldinho? even shevchenko!!! if they pushed hard enough i reckon

zemko (bob), Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow - this is... *interesting*.

My sense about Fowler: he's been drifting, spiralling gently downwards, for ages, and this latest saga or debacle is just another episode. I fear that Pompey, or Wolves, or Sheffield United or someone indeed await him, in a year or two.

(No satisfaction in that: I admire him as a player, have always wanted him to do well, and sympathized re. his unfortunate injuries.)

the pinefox, Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

He'll probably come to Spurs!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I was thinking the same thing. And I wouldn't say no.

the pinefox, Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The latest rumour is he's going to Newcastle. Hopefully not before we play them this weekend.

Tag, Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Rebrov and Doherty for Fowler would be a good swap! I wonder if Glenn reads ILX?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Best question ever!!

the pinefox, Thursday, 16 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder if Glenn reads ILX?

No, but Eileen Drewry does, so...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

so he was insulted by the inference (correct?) by city's board that he was a crock? Hmmmmm Interesting isn't it?

Manyoo wouldn't get Ronaldinho or Shevchenko for 7 million odd, they're still 10 million plus players (PSG want 20 mil for the toothsome one) even in this climate!

chris (chris), Friday, 17 January 2003 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but if you're man u and you're spending 7m you may as well spend 14m while you're at it

zemko (bob), Friday, 17 January 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron's column fun today. If he plays 30 games it's a STONE CERTAINTY you've already got 18-23 goals ON THE BOARD.

the pinefox, Friday, 17 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

He's not the solid citizen he once was.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

he still scores 'em FOR FUN though.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron called it a "stone-blind certainty".

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I KNOW! ron is just taking the piss now, tripping off the tongue maybe but in print!!

zemko (bob), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wish Fowler would make his bloody mind up.

Tag, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
It's OK! He's back!

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

Keegan FTW

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

seven months pass...
