What is it about these years that just make them so... eunh.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the 5!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

years that end in 9 are probably best, but I think 5 is just fine. I think odds have it over evens for sure.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

years that end in 6 are pretty rockin'. hang in there until next year.

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

1986?

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I take that back. T'Pau had a hit single in 1986. You're right.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(although Chernobyl kinda stains that year for me... ew)

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ew chernobyl gross!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

that was also one of the sucky Halley's Comet years. I was born at the wrong time. Hope I'm alive in 2062 to see it again. :p *thumbs down*

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

what was wrong with it that year?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

January - A Vicks Formula 44 ad premieres, starring Peter Bergman from All My Children, in which he told the viewing audience "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV."

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

and thus hilarity is unleashed!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki: the comet was barely visible. It practically threatened people in 1910, it was so large in the sky. That's a cool comet sighting. Especially when people think they're gonna die from the comet's tail's "poison gas"! 1986 was a dud Halley's year.

but anyway, "5" years.

(Cathy, I hope 2006 rocks too. And I'm quite a fan of your work with Luciano Berio's compositions. Very well executed. :) .. oh and that Peter Bergman quote is indeed classic.)

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what? I think these years are actually very enjoyable but unmemorable. Doesn't it seem that all of these past years were relatively trouble-free, not taking actual history into account, but just vague memories which may be entirely inaccurate? Ah, you see?

Snoozefest, Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe david bowie's "five years" is actually about years that end in 5!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

also the olsen twins were born in '86!! lindsay lohan too!

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

well, 1985 at least had this

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Reminds me that the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon comes this year. That might be interesting.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ironically, 1975 would be the Thin White Duke's, ur, thinnest year...physically speaking.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I FORGOT ONE THING THAT MAKES ME WANT TO FORGET 1985 COMPLETELY...

http://www.top40db.net/images/Artists/USA%20For%20Africa.JPG

..and we all know what horrible natural disaster just happened. And we all know it's the 20th anniversary of that... that... thing above. And we all know how we are going to ring in the relief effort for the tsunami effort this year, just because it's a "5" year....*horror*!!!

(Of course, I'm happy for any success of any relief efforts for the people who suffered the tsunami, no matter what form.. duh... so this is all just being jokey and shit, but ugh, the aesthetic damage of USA For Tsunami Relief 2005.. is Geldof going to rise again? Who would be the writers of the anthem? What would it sound like? Would Michael Jackson be involved? My hEAD!!)

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i turn thirty this year.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't believe nobody's said 1835 yet.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

1865 was good because y'know like the civil war ended and stuff. not so good for lincoln, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I am also thirty this year. (on Monday even.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i would say happy birthday but fuck thirty.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

30 was a great year for me! Fuck the twenties!

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Years that end in Three (3) Hooray!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i like years that end in 5, at least so far. 95 was the year i graduated, turned 18, went to university, hung out in both london and new york, and generally had a great time.

2005 is exhausting, but good so far. i have high hopes.

i don't remember much about 1985, really. i must have been in 3rd grade, which had a great teacher, mr. palisinski. was that the year the challenger blew up? not a good thing, obviously, but really memorable.(ah, nope, it was jan 86, apparently)

ooh, wikipedia says that was the year of new coke, as well. and 'the breakfast club' and 'back to the future'. whitney houston's first album was great. and 'like a virgin' is great.

AND huey lewis had a hit with 'the power of love'. interestingly, according to wikipedia:

The Power Of Love is the name of three different songs originally released in 1984 and 1985. All three were UK chart hits in 1985 – the only year in which three different songs of the same name have been in the charts.

um, i should really do some work or something, shouldn't i?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 20 January 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Years that end with a five are great for taking a breather.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

EIGHTEEN EIGHTY FIVE?! GREAT SCOTT!

Doc (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No one's mentioned that Bowling for Soup song yet?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

1985 was okay. I like the Bowling for Soup song.
1995 I don't recall.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I got my first transformer in '85. I was late catching on.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Every year is kinda the same unless you make a note of something.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

1865. 1915. 1945. 1975. 2005.

War, war, war, war, war.

The Mad Puffin, Friday, 21 January 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

There's been a war somewhere every year since records began :(

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Years I remember that end in 5

1975: Nixon, Vietnam, gas rationing come to mind
1985: Magnum PI, English powerpop/psych, Madonna and Michael Jackson come to mind
1995: Here it becomes a blur. I am so absorbed in my own activities, and being a musician that the only non-related thing I remember is OJ Simpson's trial.
2005: I associate this with the misery of four more years of the Republican regime and a profound lack of optimism and hope.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Years that end in 5 always suck for me. This is because I was born in August 1977, and every 5th year of my life is awesome -- leaving multiple-of-5 years as the low points of the cycle. I'm bracing for the next year, but I always have thirty to look foward to.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There's been a war somewhere every year since records began :(

Yeah, but don't the two world wars, at least, sort of stand out from the crowd a bit in terms of scope and scale?

The Mad Puffin, Friday, 21 January 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That same "scope and scale" also kinda makes them span over enough years that the 5s don't seem relevant.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to have a theory that years ending in 4 and 7 were the interesting ones pop-culturaly (sic? oh who cares). But last year sucked for all of that, so theory renounced.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly the stock market goes up up up during years that end in 5.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, guys, any year is a good one to bask in my awesomeness. I don't know what else you're trying to get out of life.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

*bask* *bask*

Nope, sorry, my life hasn't changed yet.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

:(
