Also a convenient way for your parents to get you something you actually want for a given holiday.

^ lol.
I have added shit compulsively to my Amazon wishlist for 5 years. I have only ever received/bought one thing from it. Why do I continue?

i do the same thing, it's like 12 pages long. not to buy stuff, just to bookmark it. periodically i go through and delete stuff i've already read or bought. kinda ridiculous.

― TOMBOT, Saturday, 22 November 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)
I actually go through and prune mine on a semi-regular basis, to include whenever I buy something for myself off of it at a regular store, because as soon as I forget to take something off that I don't want anymore it's pretty much a sure thing that I will get it in the mail from somebody in about a month from now.
― TOMBOT, Saturday, 22 November 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)
I use it as a shopping list more than anything. Whenever I buy something I actually need from amazon like 200' of sisal rope @ $6 so I can make a homemad scratching post for the doctor, I pick a couple things off the list and get free shipping. It's like the myth of consumerisyphus

funny counterpoint to posting that, I am listening to sucka nigga by the tribe right now
― TOMBOT, Saturday, 22 November 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
you're right! this is a prime example of why being rich would be the best

They actually have a personal "Shopping List" feature now (not public like the Wish list) which is a nicer looking and more organizable. I use it all the time, though inevitable there are dozens of things on it which I will probably never get around to buying. Before this was available I just had tons and tons of things hanging "saved for later" in the shopping cart, which you can still do.

I figure no point in having a shopping list on amazon because the stuff I use amazon for is either 1. need, and soon 2. would like to have, whenever; 1 is served by me ordering it when I find it and 2 doesn't matter - so wishlist it is. Shopping lists are for groceries.

make a homemad scratching post
How did you do this, and did it work out okay?
― Jaq, Saturday, 22 November 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)
I have an amazon wishlist, full of weirdo gourmet food products and cooking gadgets, a few books, and a v. nice high$$ Philip Farkas model Holton double horn (F/Bb) w/ a screw-off bell. Just in case someone (anyone?) gets feeling especially generous.

I live in an "english basement," and there's an iron structural support for the first floor of the rowhome above me near my pantry. He already treats it like a tree trunk, rubbing on it and sitting by it whenever there's no better place for him to hang out (on the couch, or a newspaper, or in an empty box), so I just took the rope and after fastening it at the bottom with a staple gun I wrapped it around the base about 2-3 strands thick and went up as high as the rope would go. I pulled the end back to the bottom after looping it back on itself at the top, then knotted and nailed into place with a framing nail (tapped the nail in about halfway, bent it, and just batted it flat the rest of the way so it works like a hook).
Of course I only did this just the other night so I dunno how well it "works" yet. Being from an academic background, Ben hasn't quite figured out what he's supposed to do with it yet. I suspect once he does I'll come home to a ridiculous spiral mess laid out across the kitchen next to an extremely excited postgraduate

We have these big (maybe 8" dia.) metal earthquake retrofit things in our place - I was thinking about wrapping one, but figured I'd have to glue the rope down to keep the guys from wreaking complete havoc on it. Either that, or they'd completely ignore it.
― Jaq, Saturday, 22 November 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)
oh yeah I forgot to mention that the iron post has semi-crap wood trim built around it that I was able to nail/staple the rope to.

I now have two, one for Amazon.com and one for Amazon.ca, with the theory that not having to cross customs is good.
