OK, so what did Rodney Marsh actually say?

Some dumb "Toon Army" / "Tsunami" joke got him fired from Sky Sports. But what was the actual line?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Becks won't be going to Newcastle - not after what the Toon Army did in Thailand."

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a rubbish joke, and Marsh has rightly been hit with a wave of criticism.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a pretty good bad taste pun (which are rubbish be default perhaps). i'm irked by double-standards in the media when it comes to these things.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

but Marsh is more arrogant than Hansen could ever be so maybe it's for the best.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a pretty rubbish pun.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

don't be jealous

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stand Rodney Marsh anyway, so this is good news.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the lack of relevance that makes it sub standard i think. say, if becks were a keen swimmer, or indeed if he's scared of the water or something, that would have made the joke work. whereas as it stands it's only based upon the fact that toon army sounds a little like tsunami (not even that much).

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon Ken you would KILL to think of a pun that good (bad)...

So can we talk about why it's acceptable to make this sort of bad pun in the pub around mates but why you can't do it on live TV? When you really get down to it, why is one tolerated and the other not? Because someone somewhere will be offended? Why must they be catered for at all? What about the majority who might think 'oof steady on Rodders' but not expect him to lose his job because of it? These are not questions I necessariyl require answer for but they should be asked once again.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Cartoon Network still broadcast their Toonami string?

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon Ken you would KILL to think of a pun that good (bad)...

i think you just have a lower standard for puns than i.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you should be sacked from ILX

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's not forget Rodney Marsh guffawing along with Frank McLintock's "Ten Little Niggers" comment last year.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's the publicity of it, once again yeah.. the audience makes a big difference in things like these. Saying it to your mates in a pub is okay unless one of them had a family who died in the tsunami in thailand i guess.

I don't think this is so bad that it warrants losing your job but people are touchy nowadays when it comes to these things.

and anyways it's fun to see famous people lose their jobs.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you should be sacked from ILX

compared to the obscenities the capitalist machine spews out daily in service of its coloniality totali...

Miles finch, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

When I heared (many years ago) about the "Toon Army", I sort of assumed it was a pun on "Tsunami" in the first place.

For what it's worth, I think an apology should have been enough.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

there's just something so 'playground' about the apology-machine right now tho. It makes sense because media have more news to go on if they can hype up the demand for an apology, turning it into something more important that it actually is. Remember Cherie Blair's comment about Palestinian kids blowing themselves and others up a a couple of years back. Somebody somewhere decided it was offensive tho, and suddenly it's an outrage etc.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like: i [would] find richard littlejohn's stuff offensive [if i read it]... and he should be sacked! actually, that thing on the artrocker thread on ilm -- that's way more 'offensive' than this. ditto any issue of the spectator. or indeed some sky news coverage...

Miles Finch, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

or J3ff Pow3ll's page in the Daily Mail (offensive in the 'oh fuck off you pompous arse' sense)

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so what did the Beano actually say??

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's brilliant.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Presumably, Wenger Arsene didn't see anything

GENIUS!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really. I have no idea what offence that Beano thing could cause tho. It just doesn't make any sense.
