ABC2 is the ABC'S new digital free to air television channel launching in March 2005.
ABC2 will show a great range of general programming including children's, regional, documentary, arts, international and regional news shows. It will be a complementary service to the main ABC channel offering time-shifted programming, where audiences can see favourite programs again or catch programs they missed on the main channel.
That's nice. So tell me why I should buy a set top box for this again?

Dunno about SBS, but the other commercial broadcasters aren't allowed to have extra channels because it'd cut into Foxtel's profits. Seriously what a wank.
I agree about the lack of follow-through of all the possibilities that were promised for digital. It's now four years on and there's literally not a single valid reason to own a set top box. Even widescreen broadcasts are token, with 100% of the information squashed into the middle of frame.
― Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)
― bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)
What a fucking shame it would be for Foxtel to have to offer more interseting programming instead of the ridiculous shit they serve up these days. I'd hope SBS gets access to the spectrum (I seem to remember hearing that they might), but they don't even broadcast between 2am and 6am or something, so I can't imagine what they'd be able to pad a whole other channel with.
Even widescreen broadcasts are token, with 100% of the information squashed into the middle of frame.
Watching sports (like the Australian Open, for example) is absolutely awesome in widescreen. As for everything else, I pretty-much agree with you.
― Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)
The UK tried to make terrestrial digital enticing by creating two whole new channels with substantial new content [BBC Choice [now BBC3] and BBC Knowledge [now BBC4]]. By way of example, Little Britain debuted on BBC3, and the new Doctor Who will have a 13-week supporting 'making of'-style programme exclusive to BBC3.
That's the sort of thing we need to have here. Something genuinely enticing. Not the exact same line-up two hours later.

Exactly. You'd think a little bit of competition wouldn't hurt. Foxtel might offer a bit more quality, rather than the endless mill of syndicated US bullshit on 200 channels.
Watching sports (like the Australian Open, for example) is absolutely awesome in widescreen.
The Aus Open is in widescreen now? Apparently last year 7 went back to 4:3; I didn't know they'd gone back. Awesome.
Different angles for the tennis would be fantastic.
Yeah, we could choose to not have that horrid side-on angle every five points.

It reminds me of a Viz photocomic where a man gets visited by the ghost of television past, present and future. The ghost of television future says something like: Thousands of channels! Satellite! Cable! Digital! Live monster truck feeds from America! Bavarian farmyard pornography! Eighteen channels that play Keeping Up Appearances 24 hours a day, staggered at two-minute intervals!

Freeview to manufacturers: 'can you make Freeview-compatible equipment (i.e. TVs that prevent ad-skipping) and have it in shops by May?'
Manufacturers: 'can we fuck'

What Freeview is promoting as unique, say TV vendors, will be available via any integrated TV. They also claim there is no real benefit for consumers and that all the proposed marketing campaign will do is add an additional layer of confusion for consumers.
As one vendor said bluntly "Freeview is designed to slow down the skipping of TV commercials and to muddy the Foxtel message that they have over 100 channels of TV including all the Freeview channels which with Foxtel can be recorded and the advertising skipped through".
Freeview = cockberries, seriously.

http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2010/12/chris-uhlmann-leigh-sales-to-host-new-look-730.html
The ABC has announced Chris Uhlmann and Leigh Sales to host the newly-titled 7:30.
Uhlmann is currently Political Editor for ABC News while Sales has been a co-presenter for Lateline.
From March next year, it will be simply called 7.30. Sales will anchor the program from Sydney and Uhlmann will be Political Editor, presenting the show from Canberra when the news demands it. The new focus of 7.30 will be on the range and depth of the program’s reporting, and its ability to break stories and set the news agenda.
Before Great Scott came along the whole ABC (p'raps one (1) fully sick ilx regular is in a position to agree/disagree with me here) seemed to be a complete basket case. Now, with the new 24 channel and individual controllers for ABC1/2 and online trailblazing, it's thoroughly resurgent and pushing Australian television forward and continuing to do amazingly incredible stuff. Compare to the start of this thread when the whole digital exercise was a joke (it still is for ch9, apparently).

As much as I like a new ident, and the current lot of ABC1 idents are rubbish, I don't like the sound of this: "Now ABC1 will push its own look." I hope this doesn't mean INCONSISTENT BRANDING, which the ABC are masters of imo.
Also, bring back the clock. I know it hasn't been around for 25+ years or so and doesn't work in the era of digital delay, but bring back the clock.

ABC3 is for school-age kids, ABC2 daytime for pre-schoolers. (You may construct your own opinions about having a channel dedicated to showing programming for school-age kids during the hours when they are at school; I'm only here with facts)
