Please? What, in a pithy single word, is the opposite of nostalgia?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Apodemialgia.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you make that up?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

No you didn't. Fucking hell. Is that the only one?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly. Using apodemialgia makes it the most pretentious sentence I've ever written. Maybe a synonym for hope would fit.

amanda lear (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I am currently plumping for anticipation instead. The context is "delirious nostalgia-qua-anticipation" should anybody care.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

wanderlust

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of Stevie standing there, perched at his keyboard, waiting years and years for that question. And then... STRIKE!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Neophilia.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Between Neophilia and Nostalgia". That works!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 27 January 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nostalgia is Italian for homesickness. I like that it's more specific than in English.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 27 January 2005 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hard on for the future"

Huk-L, Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no, no... nostalgia is a hard on for the past, right? so it's opposite would be dread for the future. then again, not really, since future-dread and past-love compliment each other nicely.

so Daddino wins.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Apodemialgia

not in the Oxford English Dictionary. Where did you find this word?

Seems apodemialgia is the opposite of nostalgia in the Italian sense.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

no, no... nostalgia is a hard on for the past, right? so it's opposite would be dread for the future. then again, not really, since future-dread and past-love compliment each other nicely.

what would be a word for hating the past?

In the sense of 'longing for home' - wanderlust, restlessness

In the sense of 'longing for the past' - avant gardism, forward looking
