If one were to be on the lookout for cheapo second hand Playstation games and one hadn't ever played any before, what classic games would you recommend looking out for? Is Worms good?

Nick, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New answers here are urgent and key.

Tom, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

None. Playstations are poo. Or, there's always Tomb Raider - so good they released it four times! Oh? What's that? They were sequels you say?

DG, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tomb Raider most over-rated game evah!

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PARAPPA THE MUH-FUGGIN RAPPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I.B. Jammin, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As Starry's not here today I feel I should sayVIB RIBBON! on her behalf.

RickyT, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

where is starry today?

also SUPA PUZZLE FIGHTER II TURBO...the ultimate in 2-PLAYA INSANITY. mmmmm good.

jess, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She is at home being ill and lacking a net connection.

RickyT, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did they ever release vib ribbon in U.S? I remember, waaay back in my quasi-legal chinatown modchip days, asking for this game by name. No one ever had it, even the Japanese version. It trully looked like the best video game ever made.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've only played it a couple of times and it totally spannered my hands, but it was a lot of fun.

RickyT, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 have been Isabel and my surrogate life for the last couple of weekends.

Vib Ribbon in theory except I can't play it.

Wipeout 2097 is still a classic.

Zelda is ace. Both those last are really very old though.

Tom, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vib Ribbon is fucking ace. Nick, you really should try it. You'll go mad, and start fancying cute Japanese animated rabbits, like I did. And you can use your own music..maybe Starry will give you a lend of it. Oh, but it's PS2, yours. Were you asking for PS1 though? Tomb Raider is also good. Though I always found it impossible without using walkthroughs. Perhaps you are opposed to this blatant cheating. One never knows. And, GTA, OF COURSE.

alix, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes I have PS2 but magic backwards compatibilty you can play PS1 games on it and they are a lot cheaper and more plentiful second hand so I thought I'd pick up a couple to wean me off my GTA3 obsession.

Nick, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

zelda is not a ps game unless i'm more vastly mistaken than a man attempting to buy a mini metro from a greengrocer.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The one before Ocarina was wasn't it? Or maybe John had a Nintendo too!

Tom, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and VIII, and all the Resident Evils.

That's about it though. The more I think about it the fewer really good PS1 games there are out there. Hmph.

Paul Strange, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All the ones like Resident Evil are shite, you walk down a corridoor slowly and a zombie attacks. Great.

Tom, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Zelda has never been on Playstation. Nintendo wouldn't allow it, I'm pretty sure of that. Just remembered the Crash Bandicoot games were good. And so was Silent Hill, Bust A Move 4 and Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo.

Paul Strange, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've only played zelda on N64. however worms is GRATE, also v social, as tis much better vs real ppl than the computer.

carsmilesteve, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and Resident Evil 2 is the scariest game I have ever played, with the exception of Half-Life, AVP and some other computer games. I think the RE series is great - it's all just running around shooting things and finding keys, but it's done with such style... And those bloody spiders. Ach.

Probably better off getting RE: Code Veronica though. Much prettier, but less scary.

Paul Strange, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

resident evil = v badly designed games (structurally) but they sell so well.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Loads of good PS1 games.

ISS Pro Evolution is the only game I still play on it, about a year and a half after I got it.

Speed Freaks.

I can't think of more but I know there are some. I had loads of copied ones then I kind of stopped playing it.

Ronan, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Puzzle Fighter (of course) and I liked Silent Hill even though everybody thought it was the poor man's Resident Evil (which sounds downright awful). The game didn't make any sense, in the way it played and looked, which I'd argue is its strong points.

Honda, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Driver, Tony Hawk, Madden 2000, Metal Gear Solid

Kris, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

stay clear ov crazy addictive crap anime kidzstuff = azure dreams, star ocean:second story - i wasted lifetimez

also i luvd driver, gta, tmb rdr2, abe's oddessey, fade to black [v.dated] and tenchu

, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Resident Evil style games suck ass. Admittedly, I might think this because I'm shit at them, but I can't really see the attraction.

RickyT, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I(ntelligent) Q(ube) is pretty good if you like puzzle games.

My favorite PS1 game = Bust A Move, a Japanese game in which you dance. Now that I think about it, it is URGENT AND KEY that Tom hear the soundtrack to this game, complete with no-way-in-hell- did-they-authorize-that Michael Jackson samples in a pastiche that is better than anything MJ himself has done since Thriller. Plus loads of J-Pop, and something that's either meant to be like Bjork or is just brilliant on its own. Point being, it was a "punch these buttons and your character will dance" game in the manner of Parappa, and it was fabulous.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Metal Gear Solid is the best game ever (that wasn't on the original Nintendo or called Street Fighter II).

I had lots of fun playing Guitar Freaks at a friend's house once.

Jordan, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

METAL GEEEAR... it's a movie and a game, albeit the movie is crap. But you can fast-forward through all the crap i.e. every time you shoot a bad guy they give a long dying speech about their traumatised childhood. The poor bastards in the white balaclavas never had a childhood so they just go 'hurgh!' and fall over. Or if you strangle them they go 'huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuCRACK' which is GRATE.

Al, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick you can borrow some of mine of you want, unfortunately I started a new civ 2 game last night but the aforementioned metal gear solid is available as are lots of sports sims and gran turismo 1 and two if you want. I think we may have a spare copy of worms in the house too, which is great fun, especially if there's a few of you playing it, though I fear for you and madchens friendship if you start playing it, it can get vicious.

chris, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Broken Sword I&II, Micro Maniacs, Bishi Bashi Special, Abe's Odyssee, Um Jammer Lammy, all 3 Resident Evils, Tomb Raider II, Fear Effect, Heart of Darkness.

Trevor, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bishi Bashi Special, Ape Escape, Alundra, Rayman, Tenchu, Tekken 3, Smash Court Tennis, BAM3, Bust a Groove, WipeOut 2097, Medal of Honor, Vibribbon, Parappa, FF7, Everybodys Golf 2, Incredible Crisis, Fishermans Bait 2: A Bass Challenge,

Worst game I've ever played on the Playstation = Fantastic Four. It was criminal.

Tom - we were playing Zelda on a SNES. But Alundra is the nearest thing to it on the PS1.

John Mc, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

RIGHT HO! I can't believe you started this thread when I wasn't here, but I'm glad RickyT and Lixi spoke for me - VIB-RIBBON is the first you must get. It's about 9.99 from *everywhere* - they had tons of copies in HMV of all places when I got mine. Grand Theft Auto - but you've already got GTA3 you lucky git so you don't need it curses. Parappa the Rapper, BUST A Groove!, Dance Dance Revolution Euromix (though it haf not the bestest songs on it chiz chiz) and Final Fantasy Eight where you will get stuck on DISC THREE where you can't find the cnuting WHITE SEE-D SHIP. I had a go again last night and I was stuck.

Also, check the second hand stores, your PS2 should be able to handle used games. My knackered PS1 can't, sadly.

And if you find a copy of SUPER PANG! snap it up instantly. I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Sarah, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So I bought Vib Ribbon. For £12 second hand. Was I had? Anway, it seems to be very difficult and indie. But I did spend a while just clapping my hands in glee at the 'how to play' section.

NIck, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You coulda probably got a brand new spanking one for that price but if it plays alright, who cares? Vibri = ACE. It takes a while to get those VIBRI-FINGERS (tm me and Lixi) into gear and not get them spannered (tm RickyT who mumbles some nonsense about not being used to game pads) but then you get into the VIBRI-ZONE! Very very hard songs = Burn Baby Burn by ASH (yay I love Ash but not when they go soppy NB this is not just because of SWOON Tim Wheeler) and Love In the First Degree by Bananarama. Starfire by Low is a good yin too.

Sarah, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Disappointing thing - I couldn't really see much between the music and the shapes that came up.

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(so far I have only tried Belle & Sebastian and Blu Cantrell, tho)

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This thread has reached rock bottom.

Emma, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Vib Ribbon cute formalism in action?

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sony = eviL!

DG, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go on then, tell us why they're evil.

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG is right, they KILLED someone with one of their Playstations, the story is in today's Metro. Some bloke was playing with his PS on a boat and a wave came over the side and electrocuted him. What more proof do you need?

Emma, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sony = evil cos they produce substandard consoles and then authorise any old shite to be released, eg Tomb Raider 57 (surely they're up to that by now?). Mind you, this argument isn't so good any more as it seems one of the last surviving games companies, Nintendo, appear to be content to keep releasing the same games (with better graphics of course) on each of their new formats. I don't intend to buy a Gamecube cos I don't want to buy Mario Kart AGAIN!

DG, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think my reason is better.

Emma, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's wrong with them having a free and easy attitude to what they allow to be released? I think it's weird that console manufacturers have any kind of control anyway. Perhaps you could attack Sony for allowing people to release shit records to be played on their stereos, too?

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello! Sony are trying to kill people with their Playstations! Does that not count? Is human life so cheap?

Emma, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not a free and easy attitude, they have control over what is released and are biased towards rubbish.

DG, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sony control = no porn, the last twig in the dam to break before we are all frottagist Sony-slaves. They're waiting for the right moment.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'any old shite' as an expression usually means 'there is no quality control' not 'the quality control is badly done'. What are these great games that Sony blocked?

I love my PS2. I bet it shits on your Nintendo. What can I say?

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma - frankly, yes. Compared to PS2 games, anyway.

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't have a Nintendo (Al Ewing bought it), and do not intend to get a PS2, I have no desire to own 'Gran Turismo 176'. And before anyone mentions 'Grand Theft Auto 3', the series started off on the PC, wot = home of innovation. And why? No licensing...

DG, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't afford a PC.

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, tis a shame.

DG, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get a paper round.

Emma, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Get a paper round!" - the lo-rent indie version of 'No Scrubs'?

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure if Emma would appreciate being called Indie...

Pete, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, that's why I said it. You reckon she doesn't mind being called 'lo-rent' then?

Nick, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oi. No dissing me on the internet when I'm out of the office.

Emma, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"What are these great games that Sony blocked?"

Broken Sword 3. The capitalist pig-dog scum.

Trevor, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thrill kill is fkn wicked

, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R saying Jumping flash R only reason to own playstation.

I R games guru!, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BTW, the Dreamcast is selling in stores for $50 dollars now (if you can find one) and it's a thousand times better than the PS1.

Kris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 21 October 2012 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

Ha.

I bought my PSOne in 2000 or so, finally ditched it in a move a couple months ago. I never really had that many games for it but some of 'em showed me a real good time: Symphony of the Night, UmJammer Lammy, Puzzle Fighter, the first two Tony Hawks (which ruled our entire hallway freshman year in the dorms), Soul Reaver. Went through a weird blurt about a year ago where I picked up Final Fantasy 9 and did almost nothing else but play it for eight or nine days before I suddenly realized it was total bullshit and I wanted my life back, which is probably the real reason I sold the system. Down to just an SNES now and I lost some of the best games for that under mysterious circumstances. Oh well, not like I really need to spend all my precious ILXing time on video games.
