I love this review. It makes me want to see the film. Like reviews should. Conversely, all reviews of 'Sideways' put me off, even though I like Alexander Payne and will probably like the film. What a great critic Rosenbaum is!

five months pass...
pretty good film! better than the original.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. Amazing what having proper actors in a film can do.

Though the original has better music. (If you discount the hilarious KRS-One rap at the end that tells you the entire plot like he was there).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah, they shoulda filched the original... segued it into goldfrapp...

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

you've got to be fucking kidding me

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

what's so great about the original? (except for the music.) i agree with j-ro.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

the music, the creepy "silenced" bullets, the totally shocking ice cream scene, the fact that the plot is straightforward & scary (as opposed to the shitty twist the remake has--also the remake opening is so zzzzz, it's exactly the first 10 minutes of bruce willis's "hostage"! EXACTLY)... the weirdly unpretty '70s actors... the genuine tension... the fact that it's awesome!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

slocki so goddam otfm with every word of that post.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

i don't hate the carpenter versh, but it's very 'film buff' in that it has zero 'content', kind of. i *like* that the new one has a (very stock) 'police corruption' story. i've thought about the remake a bit, and i've decided it's more hawksian, or explores the hawksian problematic(!), much more thoroughly than the '76. it's about the possibility of moral action. the central conflict: why should hawke protect the crims when the cops are in cahoots with them -- is sharp. i don't think carpenter aims for that.

but otoh i thought the first 10mins of the '05 one were skill. i haven't seen 'hostage'.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure what you mean by zero content... i think you're really underselling the carpenter film to be honest, to me it has 100000 x the spirit of rio bravo. the remake really coasts along on new-hollywood cop cliches, to me the conflict is really uninteresting and totally stock...

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

the conflict is a bit stock, but at least it's there. i don't really get the appeal of 'pared-down' things -- carpenter is a bit 'no-bullshit' for my taste. his film has more spirit than 'rio bravo' but fewer characters, less human drama.

N_RQ, Friday, 29 July 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

The original is G*R*A*T*E. The remake is so rubbish that I have not gone to see it.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 29 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

impeccable. i liked soderbergh's 'solaris' so much i refuse to see the original.

N_RQ, Friday, 29 July 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

that's interesting... I saw the original Solaris the other day, and I thought it was the kind of film that could be improved by Hollywood.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

The original AOP13 is so good that I couldn't force myself to see the remake. Ethan Hawke, ugh.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Just watched Nid de guepes and for a Euro-AOP13 ripoff it's pretty great. Apparently the plot for the AOP13 remake was lifted from this movie (which came out in 2002).

Director Florent Emilio Siri went on to direct Hostage (referenced upthread) so there you go...
