Why Are Old People So Boring?

Old people really wind me up, and I think they do it on purpose. They just drone on and on about stuff (of no relevance to you) that happened before you were born, not even pausing long enough for you to end the conversation gracefully. No matter how obvious your excruciating agony is, tapping your foot and drumming on the tabletop and glancing toward the exit. Always casting for trivial details too. "When I first moved here it was Maple Street...hold on, Oak Street? No, I'm quite sure it was Maple..." Why do they do this? Does everyone turn out like that?

I hope you end up living on your own, supporting yourself on little cash and then you might find the answers to some of your questions, mister.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do old people have such sexy assholes?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Much more like it!

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Lara one day I hope you get locked in a room with my grandparents after they've been given a bag of speed and you're not even given earmuffs!

one day an old person will overpower you, then you'll think of this thread.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

why do they wear grey coats? if i was greying myself the last thing i would do is exacerbate that by wearing dull colours too.

Stevem On X (blueski), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

they wear grey coats in tribute to jean grey - remember most of these people were there to experience dark phoenix as it happened!

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

also you're forgetting something: 12/7

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

old people should dress more like super heroes

Stevem On X (blueski), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I beg to differfor. For many of them it's an evolutionary adaptation that makes them suited to their habitat: in those grey industrial cities, they virtually disappear.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

bogart's a grey industrial city?

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, maybe bogart - but farmington? and surely not bishop? seb what is you on about man?

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 29 January 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, grey and industrial city: it's a matter of psychogeography.

"Old people really are bonkers. They cackle, moan about the war and then they die! BRILLIANT!"

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 30 January 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I like old people, they have the best stories. I even prompt them for more stories when they run out, and get this...I am making a doco about a few old people.

papa november (papa november), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i like old people its like a reminer of death that talks

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I told an old person the other day who insulted me that they were most likely going to die sooner than me. That shut them right up.

papa november (papa november), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i talk to old people on phones about dead miners and i speak to old people in real life sometimes theerfore i am now offended and am going to go to my room and say you all immature

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 30 January 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Papa November and I are on a similar wavelength.

I adore most elderly people -- sure, there are the really insufferable elderly folks out there, but by and large I've found that the percentages of elderly assholes, in my experience, has been much lower than the percentages of assholes from other age groups. So most of the elderly out there are really, really nice and lovable. And they have so many stories to tell about what it was like a long time ago, what historical events they've gone through, the changing aspects of everyday life, their family histories -- so many stories. And they're so wise and always appreciative of affections directed toward them.

I love elderly people.

OTOH, I have little patience with almost every single little child out there. Little children, by and large, are noisy, rude, overboisterous, and bratty. They don't know how to behave, they're really hard to communicate with, and they end up making me feel really nervous. Yeah, there are always going to be exceptions here, but they're pretty few and far between.

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 30 January 2005 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Children have magnets in them. You walk down a busy street and they just ram into your leg. Better still is when they stop dead in front of you unexpectedly and then you run into them, fall down and make you look like a big jerk as they sit bawling on the pavement.

papa november (papa november), Sunday, 30 January 2005 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant "they fall down".

papa november (papa november), Sunday, 30 January 2005 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It is interesting really, that in some older cultures the elderly are the matriarchs/patriarchs of a tribe or family and respected SO highly, they live in and rule over the home or community. Not here though (here being the West, I guess). It is a bit sad. My grandparents rock, they have some great tales. I always think of the first time I saw the Cocteaus on TV and Liz was hollering away, I happened to be at my nan's watching it, and she diplomatically said "I think I'll go make some tea" and left the room haha. But she loves me :)
