record store confrontations!

I was at Amoeba Records a couple of nights ago, browsing the rap LPs, and there was a ruckus up by the front. Some guy was either asked to leave by someone, or had an issue with one of the clerks, and started shouting and freaking out and throwing strange hand shapes around. His girlfriend and a clerk tried to calm him down, to get him out of the place, but he kept coming back in (5 times or so). Third time in, he rips off his t-shirt and holds out his arms in an aggressive "notice me!" manner, then leaves, putting his shirt back on, then comes back, takes off the shirt again, then tries to take off the chain around his neck, but fails. Eventually he leaves with his GF, the two holding hands as they left. Or more like, him dragging her by the hand.

Maybe they were sold out of the new Bright Eyes albums?

Maybe it was as a result of a violent bout of sudden-onset food poisoning?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh maybe he'd had some bad sushi and was delirious with sickness, and he mistook Amoeba for the restaurant, and he was actually shouting, "Refund!", and he tore off his shirt because he was fearful of getting vomit on it.

Was one of the clerks Jack Black?

They were all Jack Black.

Dude, I'm telling you.. ever since I had to ask the "homie" to stop guarding the bootleg dance 12" section, and he basically backed off in a throws-hand-up-in-the-air retract followed by a "SURE homeboy! check it out" and leaving all pissed off deal, I've always had a really weird vibe about that place.

One time when I worked at Amoeba, this girl was flipping through the stacks, and a guy who was standing next to her... uh... came on her hand. Before we figured out what had happened, the dude ran out the front door. We gave her a gift certificate to shut her up.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the things people won't go through for a gift certificate.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

how much was the gift certificate?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was $50.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got an idea for a scam. polyphonic, you meet autumn at Amoeba. you have a wank on him and run out. he'll go complain, we'll split the gift certificate three ways.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ew

gem (trisk), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

On the flip side of this icky issue, I remember receiving gift certificates from customers that were coated in who-knows what.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ok enough. it is school holidays at the moment and my favourite record shop is overrun with hormones-racing teenaged boys, i don't want to think about this issue (*snigger*) any more

gem (trisk), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

you have a wank on him and run out.

That's the first time anyone's ever said that to me.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Riot Gear just wants a cut. Neither the handpainter or the handpaintee, and yet still get a cut? You are destined for a career in real estate or maybe the stockmarket.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps he's on stroke.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 31 January 2005 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

actually most record store confrontations i've seen involve guys haggling over exchange rates on used CDs and LPs.

favorite exchange:

customer: "Dude, you're fucking me."

clerk: "Fucking you? This is Gaucho by Steely Dan. Take the dollar!"

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 31 January 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

.. no the other hand!
