High school or ILX hookup chart?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

1. isn't it interesting how many of the isolated, free-floating groups have multiple dudes (sometimes up to six) attached to a single girl?

2. props to that one dude in the core group! (upper righthand side of that particular web)

3. spot the two boys who've slept with the same girl whose circles are also touching! scandalous high school threeway or pdf rendering error?!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"hey baby how's about a little pdf rendering?"

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually made one of these for my circle of friends in high school and early college. It took minutes to render. I haven't updated it in years, but I bet it would be totally gross now.

i say that to my PC most nights

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"touching circles" = a pretty solid euphemism

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

High school acts of lesbianism! PROVEN BY SCIENCE!

Drake Beardo (cprek), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i would LOVE to see a followup study of a college dorm residence.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I MADE ONE OF THESE REGARDING EXCHANGE STREET IN PORTLAND MAINE. 50+ PEOPLE COULD ACTUALLY BE NAMED, AGES RANGING FROM 16-29.

Your Ohio tax dollars at work!

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread deserved better.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Better what?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any gays in high school?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

two pairs by the look of it, one of each gender

koogs (koogs), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

seems like most gays I know didn't come out til they left home

Snappy (sexyDancer), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

In the upper right-hand corner or the diagram, on one of the short arcs (ten nodes, to be exact), there is an absolutely-no-rendering-error lesbian relationship (or three way, or bisexual girl, etc.).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

63 2-groups is really sweet.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

One of these was made for my school, and it featured on THE NATIONAL NEWS. I have no idea why.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, if I was in one of those 2-groups then saw this and the heaving mass of sluttishness which dominates it, I'd be feeling kind of regretful.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to see who the sluttiest dot is: I can find a girl dot attached to five boy dots, but the boy dot record appears to be just four.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

props to that one dude in the core group! (upper righthand side of that particular web)

he's at nine.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and the girl over to the right in a smaller web is on 6.

I thought the props were going out to the gay dudes in that web!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

There were a couple of these for my high school, which was a "Jefferson" high school. This isn't one of them, though.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.sociology.ohio-state.edu/jwm/chains.pdf is the writeup for this -- they analyized this to study disease transmission.

Interesting facts -- this accounts for 52% or so of the population, the rest not being sexually active. Second, there's an obvious preference between low-partner ppl. and other low-partner ppl, in part contravened by low-partner girls and higher partner boys with a .9 yr age difference on average.

Finally, there's a social-status prohabition against "small cycles." I.e. if your ex hooks up with someone new, you don't date your ex's current's ex.

i.e. if carol leaves you for bob, and bob leaves alice for carol, then you don't date alice.

I wish this chart had a border of all the lonely pink and blue dots who didn't get any.

Site Admistrator (deangulberry), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I want a t-shirt with the upper-left node/tree. Maybe with a little red arrow that says "you are here."

they should be moping along the border staring at their shoes

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Or the central dots.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

does this really represent high school students having sex with each other or just "hooking up" in the typical high-school-parlance sense? because if the former, i'm sort of shocked. i only knew a few people who were having sex by age 17 or so, and i can name only one who had sex with two people in our high school. i always figured that other people were more sexually active than my peer group but not to this extent.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

romantic relationships as well as sexual relationships involving the swapping of fluids (STD transmission)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

huh?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

also what's the methodology here? how do they account for discrepancies? do they simply take every admission of having "hooked up" with someone at face value? couldn't this chart be effectively a compromise between the reality of romantic entanglements and the fantasies of high schoolers with regard to same?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, at least one girl is a Tru Playa 4 Rill. I salute her.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd presume they'd only include links that were admitted by both parties.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon made a crazy one of these in high school. We were such a bunch of whorebags. I wish he'd update it (nudge fucking nudge) and take out a bunch of the girls I lied about sleeping with so I can look, by comparison to the rest of my friends, like a pretty respectable guy.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

who'd you lie about? I think I have it still in ~/Attic or something....

I would look like a total whorebag now...

Some friends of mine made one of these, a couple of years or so before I knew most of them (although my ex-bf updated it every so often, so I'm on the periphery). They called it The Diagram.

I made one of these in the pub a couple of years ago, attempting to explain to a friend quite how incestuous our social circle at 16-20 actually was.

For some reason it doesn't seem quite as bad nowadays.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This news announcement release from Ohio State seems to talk about this study as mapping romantic relationships, apart from sex. The researcher talk about the actor graph showing chains of dating (he explains the lack of a lot of cycles of people not wanting to date their friend's ex's).

Am I reading this wrong? Otherwise, this study seems to just show that everybody but me really was having sex in high school.

Augustine (Augustine Bearse), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We made one of these at university. It grew into a monster with well over 100 people on it and a mass of lines tangling everywhere. Eventually we destroyed it because:

1) We decided it was sad and "too studenty".
2) BURNING REASON: It became difficult to let people into our kitchen. They would all go straight to it and start saying things like: "Hey I didn't know they slept together! Wow! Hey, that's my name..." We had one very close call with an infidelity nearly being discovered.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

did anybody read my frikin post!? i already said that just over half the student in that highschool were sexually active -- a figure, btw, which corresponds with national norms.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps i'm prude, but i feel totally relieved now

i would bet the percentage of sexually active students in my h.s. was closer to 33%

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the data was garnered from asking students about their last "special romantic relationship" as well as up to three non-romantic sexual encounters.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

okay maybe 40-45%

actually i have no way of knowing, really. among my peer group it was perhaps 10-15%.
