Do You Ride a Motorcycle?

I'm thinking about buying a motorcycle. Not as my main form of transportation (well, maybe to and from work in the summer, but alas I can't fit a car seat on a bike) but to ride on the weekends out in the country. This is a romantic American desire that I have, the frontier, the open road, etc. Want some advice from other ilxers who have bikes. My thinking is I should start with something small (I've only rode a motorcycle a handful of times), but I don't know if this is the conventional wisdom or not. What should I buy?

Also, Motorcycles C/D, S/D, etc.

I just wrecked my '71 Honda 350 a couple months ago - it won't run now.

If you haven't ridden, a good bike is the Honda CB250 Nighthawk, still in production. You can find them cheaply as a lot of people buy them then chicken out after 100 miles or so. Very simple, easy to ride, lightweight, and they're not super cheesy looking.

i'm kinda new to motorcycles. I have a Honda CB 200. It's a great starter bike in some ways - but I now think having an old bike (unless you are a mechanic) is too dangerous. mc's are dangerous enough to worry about the quirks of a 30-year old vehicle. Its tendency to slip gears and not start in the middle of 4 lanes of traffic is particularly irksome.

The frustrating thing about bikes now is the styling. You basically have to choose between cruisers and crotch-rockets. Nighthawk is one of the few standards. I'm actually looking to get a Buell blast 450 if I ever get that much disposable income.

this didn't get enough answers!

I would say that yeah, get something under 500cc to start out with. Harley riders will laugh at you but you're not the one who spent 20K on a bike. That said, if you find you really enjoy long rides, you might want to upgrade to a big cruiser. You might want to take a safety course offered in your area--it will refresh you on the basics of riding and inspecting a bike, and the instructors can offer you advice on buying.

also, where are you located and what is your build?

riding on the back of a motorcycle in new york was maybe one of the scariest few minutes of my life. also the time i almost drove me and the honda dream i was renting into a laotian river. so for me, motorcycles are dud.

I have a 50cc scooter. It's a C50, aka Supercub 50. I've always wanted to upgrade to a 250cc or 400cc (that's how the licensing works here in Japan), but I don't have the funds or time to get the license and buy the bike.

oh I love honda dreams! but I grew up on the back of a bike. :b

i have a 150 cc vespa. you should definitely take the motorcycle class in your area, like stated above. It's super easy and you can get your mc license right at the end of the class, no problem. plus they usually will have a variety of older, donated bikes for you to use so you can see what you like. You don't really need to start out small just because you have not ridden very much. You just want to make sure the bike is the right size for you so you don't drop it.

What are you getting? My interest is piqued by the smaller bikes out there, like a 350. I'm short and I can barely touch the ground on my LX 150, but I might want something that can take the highways & faster roads and has larger wheels. Going 60mph on a Vespa is the opposite of relaxing.

What are you getting?

(nb I don't want to ride on the back seat regardless.)

that 150cc vespa I had listed above was so uncomfortable to ride long distances. It was pretty but I don't miss it.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:43 (five years ago) link

Not gonna lie, I like this one a lot.

Yerac, uncomfortable how? Slash what is a long distance to you?

Unfortunately it sounds more exciting than it really is

I need a little commuter bike because I’ve had it with driving in Vancouver

I’m eyeing an electric motorcycle, probably the super soco tc, it’s their newest model

Also i have tinnitus and this thing is quiet, which will be good for my ears

So unfortunately no high speed, but i live in a very compact city where there is no highways and i would probably never be able to go very fast (traffic/small roads)

In Orbit have you seen the Genuine G400C? Been promised for years but supposedly finally arriving in the U.S. late this year. Really nice classic 1970s style from the photos I've seen.

early rejecter, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:50 (five years ago) link

Oops. yes you have.

early rejecter, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:50 (five years ago) link

It was loud, I put in side mirrors and they were so shakey, no auto turn signals, everything was super jostley to ride around in blyn (bumpy streets). It was fine for a 15 minute trip but anything more and my brain felt scrambled.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:52 (five years ago) link

It will literally take me 10 minutes to get to work

Vancouver is a tiny city when you’re driving/riding

I loved riding my decrepit Italian scooters around NYC! One of many things I miss since moving. Though the roads up in the northern suburbs have their own charms.

Sunday I rode up from Big Sur to San Francisco on my SV650. Highly recommended.

That Super Soco looks like an ideal commuter bike aside from the top speed. Is that intentionally limited for licensing purposes?

I have it bad for that G400. For under $5k! I wouldn't buy a new Vespa 150 bc I don't like the late-model styling--I'm happy to stick to the used market--but I'd buy that 400cc.

Carey, I've had a 2007 with 12k miles on it, and a 2008 with 2200k, and the latter is much more comfortable, smoother, better steering, smoother throttle and braking. The 2007 was really tiring to ride!

This was a 1977 sprint veloce vespa. It made my crotch hurt.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

We just finished up a 200-mile round trip from NYC up to Hudson Valley on the Vespas, motored around, then back two days later. We're talking around 5-7 hours on the scoot per day, and it was very tolerable except for being rainy/misty and cold!

xp Oh jesus no I wouldn't do that.

That Genuine is nice.

Yerac, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

Yeah the super soco is capped at 45 miles for licensing purposes

That’s probably how fast we drive on the roads in vancouver tbf

I will try it out and see how it goes

A guy at work has one and loves it
