We should make some tallys:

-Count the # of times the Preznit mentions "Liberty" or "Freedom."

-count the # of one-off mentions of programs that will never be followed up on: trip to Mars, hydrogen cars, $15Billion for AIDS in Africa efforts, etc.

-count the # of WTFisms: e.g. high-school steroids

Anyhoo, the shooting has begun. At least, the Democrats are getting out in front this time.

And of course, notice that the Repubs are already showing their hand in their responses:

Republicans countered not long after the two Democratic leaders finished speaking. "Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid's obstructionist remarks today were full of pessimism and personal attacks but lacked any vision for winning the war on terror or preserving Social Security for future generations," said Brian Jones, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee (news - web sites).

LORD won't this be a fun year.

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Brian Jones was dead.

Anyway, this will a marvellous event to avoid watching.

Also, note that the AP writer of that article fucks up and makes an unproven leap:
...Bush has called on Congress to pass legislation this year that will make Social Security permanently solvent.
which of course is speculative horseshit, as it were.

Of course, the way this is written, it can be taken two ways. Either that the writer is saying that the legislation that the Admin has offered(sorta) will make it permanently solvent, or that just the Preznit has called for _any_ legislation that will make it so. However, I'm betting on the former.

Anywoo, yeah. the Address. Such fun.

Oh nvmd, its on grounghog day after all....

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun's gunna start in soon:

Campaign Desk put together a "Social Security crib sheet" on it, using the different words that have been touted lately (e.g. "private" vs "personal", "transition" vs "pre-pay" costs)

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh...I am working tonight, in a conference room where there's a TV set. The only channel we can get is CNN, so we probably will have the address on in the background. Dubya on a big plasma screen and surround-sound...someone please shoot me.

i keep hoping the lights will go out for a second and there will be the sound of a skirmish and that when they come up someone (you know who) will be laying there motionless. and that we would then all be treated to a national game of murder mystery dinner theater... he doesn't actually have to be dead, but he would have to play dead until we figured out who did it.

Tom Shales' review

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Zooming in on planted audience members really makes it seem like an awards ceremony.

youn, Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This was probably the last State of the Union speech Rather will anchor. He did not look happy about it. Nor should anybody be happy about it.

As if Dan Rather "anchoring" a speech means anything on any level. Yeah, Tom. What exactly does Dan Rather bring to the table at a SOTU? His intrepid newsreading reporting?

Only Tom Shales could come up with something this inane.

currently on the front page of http://www.m-w.com/

jingoism
\JING-goh-iz-um\ noun
: extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy

(Jon L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday someone joked about President Bush being assassinated and someone else immediately yelled, "That would be horrible! Cheney would be president!" So...no.

most annoying bit: "i support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage for our children and our society." two seconds later, "we have a duty to protect the weak and vulnerable in our society." does he see ANY CONNECTION?
