Ethan says he hates all of Dickens but Christmas Carol is brilliant. I say BAH! It's AWFUL! What do you think, and why?

Dickens is evil.

Christmas Carol is evil.

Great Expectations is evil.

Dickens is just plain evil.

...Let's beat him up.

It's just a cliche now, even if ever was any good people still would want to gouge their eyeballs out with a rusty screwdriver for having 12 different new television adaptations every year ("Teen Christmas Carol with Mary Kate and Ashley!" "Lifetime Christmas Carol starring Judith Light!").

Yes! Or no, actually. My fave is still the Muppet version, a couple of sucky songs aside. Though the version with Patrick Stewart last year has its points -- in the end I'd prefer one of his solo renditions, though.

(I didn't read this thread before I responded to the Patrick Stewart thread)

I like the Muppets version: we're Marley and Marley woooooooaaaa

I think Its a Wonderful Life is a better cosy Xmas story.

Dickins is skill, but enough with the Christmas Carol awready. Enough is enough, but still they come. An animated version is to 'hit' the cinema screenz this Xmo - starring Kate Winslet who sings-a-song. Oh. Goody.

Thee bit where marley's ghost comes up from the cellar for the first time is an excellent & vivid bit ov descriptive writing. I think Dickens was GRATE.

I've always hated it, but I just realized this year that it's not only hitting you over the head with Christmas and good will, it's hitting you over the head with Christianity. If he's going to hit me over the head with Christianity, he could at least do it in a lovely way, like C.S. Lewis, not a straight-out-too-easily-cliched way.

i watched the alastair sim one tonight. i think i've seen it twenty times! a great film. i liked the george c. scott one, though it was a little more hammy in every conceivable way. the muppets one was fun.

In various high school and college productions, I have been Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchett and Scrooge.

My favorite book growing up, but I haven't read it in years.

after doing a quasi-musical version of this for three years in a row at a community theatre when i was in middle school, i involuntarily committed most the script to memory. it then haunted me for years to come. i can't hear the dies irae without thinking of stupid community theatre people joking around and singing "solvet saeclum in bob villa" and thinking they were soooo clever. the mere association of this story with crappy community theatre makes me hate this story, but scrooged is definitely a good movie and so is the muppet version!

The "Clara" girl in the Muppets Christmas Carol grew up to be "Penny Watson" the reporter for "Look Out East" in that recent Broken News thing. Not exactly the best progression in her career.

JTS (JTS), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

what of Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol> (parodied on The Simpsons last year and largely unknown to those under 40, I bet)

The 'reformed' Scrooge is kind of a bummer. I've always wanted to grow a beard and dress like the Ghost of Christmas Present one year.

Yeah, great.

that alastair sim one, btw, is absolutely terrifying when you're a kid. also i can't believe it was made in the 1950s, it feels older and somehow spookier bc of that.
