What's he been in? I've only seen Star Trek and I, Claudius.

Jeffery . A very funny movie.

anthonyeaston, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He was Gurney Halleck in Dune, and also the Duke of Suffolk in the chick flick Lady Jane.

Kim, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good role in Excalibur, I seem to remember -- also about one of the few entertaining things in Robin Hood: Men in Tights as King Richard. Absolutely hilarious cameo in LA Story. Has a few only-for-the-money parts to his (dis)credit -- Masterminds, Conspiracy Theory.

I was fortunate enough to meet him *very* briefly at a promo event for First Contact -- shorter than me, very calm and self-possessed, you can tell he's a private man when it comes to dealing with crowds and fans, but has a definite rapport with his coworkers and colleagues.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, PROFESSOR CHARLES XAVIER, duh.

David Raposa, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't see it. I am not in thrall to Hugh Jackman's cheekbones or sideburns.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You made the right decision Ned - the X-Men movie is dire.

Have also met P. Stewart, and Ned is spot-on w/his descrip. Stewart looked incredibly good when I saw him - tanned, trim, and wearing a v. nice and obv. v. v. expensive suit. He is a bit of a luvvie, but also dry, amusing and surprisingly left-wing!

I also saw him years ago acting in Henry IV pts. 1 and 2 on stage, and he was gd in a long-forgotten tv series abt a psychiatrist called 'Maybury'. And didn't he play Karla in the Alec Guiness/Le Carre TV adaptations?

Andrew L, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I once saw Patrick Stewart on a Picadilly Line train.

Doesn't he also do a one man stage version of a Christmas Carol?

james, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, he certainly was Karla in 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', thoush he didn't utter a single line and just stared at Alec Guiness.

DG, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(also stole his cigarette lighter, the fiend)

him. he was also in a TV one of 'moby dick' along with joe scully from 'neighbours'. and. um. a TV one, I should think, of 'the devil's disciple' with that ian richardson.

richard john gillanders, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think he played the merchant of venice on bbc too.

anthony, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And he was Claudius in the BBC production of Hamlet from the seventies w/Derek Jacobi as the moaning prince...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

West Yorkshire lad (Mirfield, near Huddersfield).

stevo, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James - yes he does. It's fantastic.

turner, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what's a luvvie?

dumb yank, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

luvvie = snidey brit name for actors, from affected manner of greeting, "oh dwarling, you were just mah-vellous luvvie" etc

Former Director of Royal Shakespeare Company Trevor Nunn once lost it big time and claimed that the word was as unacceptable and as offensive as n*gger. It isn't. But it is a bit mean.

mark s, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

does imdb mean anything to you :-)

I saw him at a performance of Oleanna in London. Not in it, but he was buying a drink at the interval. great anecdote huh?

Alan at home, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What possessed you to go and see oleanna, alan? (anagram fun aside)

mark s, Saturday, 1 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Luvvie isn't a term for actors, it's a term for ak-torrs. IYSWIM.

I clicked on the second pic first, and thought it was the genuine thing! Now my world is a tiny bit sadder.

God, they really shouldn't let the queen dress like that.

It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Read my full statement in the photo. #StarTrek @cbsallaccess Photo: @shervinfoto pic.twitter.com/8Ynuj3RBNm

StanM, Sunday, 5 August 2018 08:05 (seven years ago)

I love Stewart, Picard, and TNG, but making a new series about him is completely unnecessary.

Tuomas, Sunday, 5 August 2018 10:45 (seven years ago)

The only way I could see this working is if they take the Star Wars route, i.e. the actual protagonists would be of a younger generation, and Picard would mostly serve a mentor role.

Tuomas, Sunday, 5 August 2018 10:49 (seven years ago)

"to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times"

lol! purest luvvie bullshit there.

calzino, Sunday, 5 August 2018 10:56 (seven years ago)

I mean I don't expect him to say gigabucks and scraping the barrel is the real story, but that is troweling it on a bit thick!

calzino, Sunday, 5 August 2018 10:58 (seven years ago)

C'mon, it's Patrick Stewart, luvviness and actorly overstatement are an intrinsic part of the package

Anyway, glad about this, hopefully TNG crew will turn up and they needed a better sendoff than Nemesis

Also NB old people don't always have to be mentors, yknow

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 5 August 2018 13:28 (seven years ago)

he’s coming back as a force ghost to mentor rey iirc
