ILE Christmas Party Venue Drive!

I am shit at organising things. The reason we haven't got a venue yet for the 8th is not to give it an M25 illegal-rave buzzzzzz but because I've not thought of one.

Basically what we're looking at is:

- a pub/bar

- a restaurant (probably curry)

It needs to start earlyish (2-3) so people going to see the Lollies can stop by. It needs to be near enough to RoTa/easy enough to get to that there's not a big trek for people coming after Camera Obscura. The curry place should be good and open late, since late is when we'll probably be going (if we've siezed a room in a pub then surrendering it might not be so good an idea).

The ILE Awards would be done between arrival of Obscurahordes and the curry place.

Give me names! (Thanks!)

Are Cabbage and I the obscurahordes? I like it!

Mark C, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

me too, I'm looking forward to doing some pillaging.

chris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm thinking the Betsey - won't be too packed and is big enough for all of us to act like twats - also we all pretty much know where it is. People going to west London get all they deserve (sorry Mark, Cabbage ect) heh heh. Also Betsey is very near BRICK LANE CURRY MECCA numnum so... at least Betsey for post-curry, if not pre-curry. But I can't think of a better contender. But agane, I'm rubbidge with pubs. Perhaps starting centrally might be an idea, but again, somewhere biggish but not hideous? However, my SORTING HAT (HPYAY) says: THE BETSEY (and) BRICK LANE!

Sarah, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Would the obscurahordes mind tubing across town to the Betsey? Which bit of the Betsey are we finking (the middle bit I assume)?

Tom, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

no problem for me, it's a piece of piss, tube from NHG to Chancery lane then a ten minute walk, easy.

chris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ditto. I may even bring my other half, if she's around.

Mark C, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ur yeah I guess so Tom. Downstairs would seperate us out a bit too much although those little cubbyholes might be handy for NEW COUPLES to go and SNOG in GORRR. Middle floor = big chummy gang yay. Now, let's get things sorted so we can start the speculation on what curry we will order. Which curryhouse did Ed recommend, the bring yer own ALE one on Brick Lane?

Sarah, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ed recommended the lahore off comercial street, suzy will know exactly where it is, I always find it by accident. (I'm not even sure its called the lahore, I call it the lahore). Its Bring your own cheap and tasty, limited but excellent menu, I recommend the lamb chop curry.

As I have to go and party with a turkey ham and stuffing lasagna, I won't be there, except in spirit.

Ed, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"go and SNOG in GORRR"!!

Blimey. John Norman will be beaming.

mark s, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blimey. My sayings will NEVAH BE THE SAME AGANE. The Lahore eh... I had lamb rogan josh last night after my chicken dhansak was too hot for poor little old me, COISES.

Sarah, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When is Obscura gig? I get out of work at 3, or something. Starry, I am typing up Dixon!

alix, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't they usually start 3ish @ RoTa? AAAAAH, PEOTRIE.

Sarah, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes, i guess. why are there so many things to do? ho hum? iatethemall.pitas.com........go on, you know ypou want to.

alix, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I AM OVERCOME BY LANGWIDGE.

Sarah, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

um, yes. Right.

alix, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

So that's settled then?

betsey from 3ish, stay there until Cabbage/Lucy/Mark etc get over from RoTa, more bouze, then curry at the Lahore, then falling over.

And you thought it was going to be difficult Tom ;)

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If it's in the afternoon, I may be able to attend! Sorry if I subsequently do not appear. Whatis the Betsey?

james, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Betsey Trotwood is a public house on Farringdon Road opposite the Guardian offices, between Mount Pleasant and Clerkenwell Road. The 19 and 38 buses pass along Roseberry Avenue to the North and the 55 and 243 along Clerkewnell Road to the South. Nearest tube is Farringdon, and Chancery Lane is also within walking distance. One more time

RickyT, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I doubt I'll still be there for the curry but will definitely get to the Betsey for 3 or thereabouts.

As a multinominee (none of which I'm going to win) I feel a moral duty to attend.

As a human being I'll be coming straight from Oxford where I have to go to the Co-Op Funeral people at Cowley to look over Laura's headstone so could probably do with some cheering up thereafter. Tomorrow would've been L's 37th birthday and I always took her out for dinner at the nearest weekend. So I may be somewhat muted but I'll try to get into the spirit of things.

And can you confirm that top Bead recording artists Chamberpot have been booked for the event?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Do remember everyone that the on the 8th ILE has been chugging along nicely for 6 MONTHS! I know it says the 7th on the stats page but I set it up at about 11:30PM on the 7th, so it's really the 8th.

DG, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It might just be the day of the 100,000th post as well. Blimey.

RickyT, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not only that, but we seem to be rapidly approaching our 100,000th post according to the stats.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Marcello and Ricky T doing their bits there.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ooh young feller me lad would very kindly much like to reserve berth no 100,000 on "SS ILE" but suspect that young Obese Nicholas man has previously prior reserved it for message special.

Helm haul the lobsters a-craw! Minion to the sand bunker! Ahoy boogie!

Why dont you all fly across the ocean and we can frolic in the snow , the white pure edmonton snow .

anthonyeaston, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm very tempted, although prefer Keswick for snow frolicking Canada- style. Middle of nowhere and absolutely fantastic.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

have you been frolicing in a hay feild of snow right beside a pine windbreak. its pure fun.

anthony, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

On my list of things to do next year, Anthony.

But seriously: can you confirm that top SST recording artistes Paperbag have been booked for the event?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And while we're at it, can you confirm that top Power Exchange recording artiste J J Barrie has been booked for the event?

I'll bet if you answered his question: "How much does this pay, then?" with the response "No Charge, Son!" you'd be in stitches of mirth in the A&E department at the world-renowned John Radcliffe Hospital while the hapless yet lovable Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club star Barrie stood, knees knocking a-trembly, before the Desk Sergeant!
