Public Displays of Affection. People snogging openly in trains, parks etc. A brave and joyous display of love? Or just rubbing single people's faces in it? Cute? Sweet? Or not? Have you done it? Do you do it?

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

New answers, come on and snuggle up...

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't even do private displays of affection. Affection is a weakness. When our body parts are eventually replaced by machines this will all become clear.

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It depends. If it's just hand holding and minor cuddling I'm fine with it, but beyond that can get a bit annoying. I was in line at the grocery store a couple weeks back and there was a couple thatlooked like Joey Buttafuoco and Amy Fisher in front of me that was making out quite openly -- a bit difficult to ignore when you're directly behind somebody waiting in line, but oh well. It got worse from there when the boyfriend started shoving his hands down his girlfriends pants, it was so sleazy and gross. I came there to buy supplies for lunch, not to want to lose my lunch.

David has been away all week. i think we will be doing alot of pdas when he comes home.

anthony, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes.

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

have we not expressed our disgust at this behavour before?

geoff, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"making out" = snogging or nobbing?

"making out" = snogging or nobbing?

Snogging and groping in this case.

Nicole, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I do it. Um...I wish it was to rub single people's faces in it but it's not, it's just that I'm with someone I like cuddling and cuddling them seems natural. You can go too far, as Nicole says. The odd snog in the supermarket is great though, so even there I am a hypocrite.

Tom, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Even the odd snog I don't mind (I'd be lying if I said I'd never done this myself), but sticking your hands down other peoples pants in public is just gross. Especially if you look like Joey Buttfuoco.

Nicole, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Being single, I seem to be a PDA magnet. Walking on city streets, moping @ a concert, shopping for groceries or unmentionables or unnecessaries, there's a plethora of couples with hands in each other's pants pockets, Eskimo kissing, nibbling on earlobes, snuggling, mashing faces, kneading shoulders. I should be more upset by it (I mean, really), but I simply sigh and think about when I was doing that sort of thing, and making people blech. Makes me smile (in a jaded fashion, mind you).

David Raposa, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

How come it's fine to grope someone else in public but not yourself, eh? Flaming couples.

Emma, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Little kissing/hugging is okay. Groping and tongues down throat is not.

Samantha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Emma, guys do that all the time.

David Raposa, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't remind me.

Emma, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I believe that is known as a pubic display of affection. [Cue Mark Sinkers head falling into hands as I took up his gauntlet vis a vis public / pubic gag and tied it in with men groping their own savage gardens)]

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I observing hate PDA's! These couples want you to be jealous and look at them. Definetely not cute.

james, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I mean I hate observing.

james, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm undecided on this. It's ridiculous to blame ubiquitous public snoggers for my own bitterness. That said, the words 'get a fucking room' also come to mind

turner, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Holding hands, arm around shoulder/back, a kiss or two = fine and cute. All-out and prolonged make-out sessions = juvenile, inconsiderate dud.

Nude Spock, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Whenever I'm single, I think they're icky and repulsive. Whenever I'm involved, I look and go "aaahhh..."

Generally I'm not keen on them when they involve me. Unless of course, I'm drunk and then all decorum goes out the window.

kate, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

dud, I tell them to get a room. It seems to be symptomatic of the honeymoon period of a relationship, after they have been together for a while it does not seem to be so imperative unless of course, they want to shove it in everyones faces. I dont want unhygienic displays near the fresh fruit section you know :)

Its not the kind of behaviour I indulge in because a noone wants to ruin their reputation, and b, I sure as hell dont want my personal life becoming that public. Besides I think most people would prefer not to see it.

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Anything more then a quick hug or kiss is just gross. Also I'd like to go upside the head of people who spit on the sidewalk.

bnw, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

PDAs in front of a whole bunch of people you know aren't as much of a dud as PDAs in front of a group of acquaintances IMO.Which is tricky - wouldn't people in theory be more comfortable being affectionate in front of people they know? However,PDAs in front of strangers are safer because the likelihood is that you'll never encounter the strangers in question again.

Damian, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What's actually so bad about them, though - they're not harming you, surely? The people here who do them are being all sheepish here and the ones who dont have an unexplained righteousness. I've changed my mind - I think they're beautiful and you're all cranks.

Actually hand-holding is much worse, it blocks out a lot more space, especially on a busy streeet.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

they remind us singles that we are just that

michael, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well that's not our problem. And anyway - if it's beautiful people copping off in public then it's an aesthetically pleasing sight in itself. If it's ugly people then it should give you renewed hope!

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

grrrr!

michael, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh come on Tom it is not aesthetically pleasing to watch people slobbering over each other and waggling their tongues around each others' faces. Ick. And you can't usually tell if the people are beautiful or not as their faces are jammed together.

Emma, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I remain to be convinced that opposition to PDAs is anything other than prudishness or bitterness.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

well, seeing too much tongue (and throat too) is just gross. however i am not against PDA. i think public relationship drama, hereafter referred to as PRD, is much more traumatizing and awful for anyone nearby, especially if it involves shouted epithets about sizes of body parts.

maura, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

opposition to PDAs = repressed annoyance they are not going FURTHER
