Footballing world entirely unsurprised. Martin O'Neill linked with the job, world even less surprised.

Go on Man City. Employ Glenn Hoddle. It'll be funny.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Strachan?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought he had been pushed.

Apparently potential singings would have been put off if they knew he was leaving in 2006.

They are a funny lot, footballers.

Is he going to devote himself to dog breeding?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

There is one surprising thing which is that Keegan was City's longest serving manager for 20-odd years........... well maybe that's not so surprising

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Strachan would be the sensible option, whether he'd want to join is another matter. Isn't the club in a complete mess, financially?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What club isn't? I think Strachan would join but I'm not sure he isn't enjoying being a pundit a wee bit too much.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

at least they wont be signing harry kewell now;)

Christian Gross?

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, they can just have Martin O'Neill if they want. I've stopped caring (and, you know, it's my opinion that counts at Parkhead..)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

after Keegan's comments about not staying on after next season, it seemed obvious that he would quit before then. what a daft thing to say, Kev is perhaps still too naive for management.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 11 March 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Give me Keegan over Mourinho any day............ not to manage my club tho of course!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

5Live was grebt this morning (grebt=weird).

They had tinky winky Alan Ball on as an ex-City manager and player to comment. Out of noweher, Alan interpreted a banal question as an attaempt at character assassination of Kelvin Koogan and defended him as if he were giving the eulogy at his funeral. He then sauid 'look darlin, being manager isn't easy.' and later 'listen love, management is a tough game'.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, who hasn't managed City at some point or other?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my Mum. oh wait...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"i think i'll take off Bernabia and put on a nice cup of tea"

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Awww, that reminds me of when Graham Taylor was commentating on Russia vs Japan or whichever minimal-interest match they shunted him to at 8.30am on a Sunday morning. Whoever the main commentator was asked him for his opinion on a controversial substitution and he just launched into this huge "YOU DO WHAT YOU THINK IS RIGHT!" rant. Bless him.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

KK's greatest achievement for City has been mid-table mediocrity. Think of the four years BEFORE he joined - three relegations and a promotion, something of that order. He brought us a promotion (in a 120-goal season) and almost three seasons of mid-table (relative) stability in the Premiership. That's the positive side, anyway.

I'm sure you've seen them already and they're winging their way around email systems as we speak, but....

* "We deserved to win this game after hammering them 0-0 in the first half."

* "I don't think there's anyone bigger or smaller than Maradona."

* "Maine Road was a great football stadium but as time moved on it stayed where it is..."

* "Chile have three options - they could win or they could lose."

* "Gary always weighed up his options, especially when he had no choice."

* "The tide is very much in our court now."

* "The Germans only have one player under 22, and he's 23."

* "He can't speak Turkey, but you can tell he's delighted."

* "Batistuta is very good at pulling off defenders."

* "There'll be no siestas in Madrid tonight."

* "It's understandable that people are keeping one eye on the pot and another up the chimney."

* "England can end the millennium as it started - as the greatest football nation in the world."

* "I know what is around the corner - I just don't know where the corner is. But the onus is on us to perform and we must control the bandwagon."

* "They compare Steve McManaman to Steve Heighway and he's nothing like him, but I can see why - it's because he's a bit different..."

* "In some ways, cramp is worse than having a broken leg."

* "Should Al-Fayed get a British passport? 1000 per cent yes."

* "The good news for Nigeria is that they're two-nil down very early in the game..."

* "Despite his white boots, he has real pace..."

* "That would have been a goal if it wasn't saved."

* "Goalkeepers aren't born today until they're in their late 2Os or 3Os."

* "The substitute is about to come on - he's a player who was left out of the starting line-up today."

* "The ref was vertically 15 yards away."

* "Sir John Hall was a multi-millionaire when I came back to Newcastle. With all the players I've bought, I'm trying to make him just an ordinary millionaire."

* "Football's always easier when you've got the ball."

* "People still have the concept of one big bath, but the way forward hygeine-wise is single baths."

* "It's like a toaster, the ref's shirt pocket. Every time there's a tackle, up pops a yellow card."

* "I'd love to be a mole on the wall in the Liverpool dressing room at half-time."

* "I'm not trying to make excuses for David Seaman, but I think the lights may have been a problem..."

* "The game has gone rather scrappy as both sides realise they could win this match or lose it."

* "I'm not disappointed - just disappointed."

* "There's a slight doubt about only one player, and that's Tony Adams, who definitely won't be playing tomorrow."

* "I came to Nantes two years ago and it's much the same today, except that it's totally different."

* "We managed to wrong a few rights."

* "It's my job not to get beheaded."
* "I'll never play at Wembley again, unless I play at Wembley again."

* "Sometimes there are too many generals and not enough people waving to the generals as they walk past."

* "A tremendous strike which hit the defender full on the arm - and it nearly came off."

* "That decision, for me, was almost certainly definitely wrong."

* "Danny Tiatto is not going to make a mistake on purpose."

* "He'll also be very dangerous from set-pieces. That means he'll be a threat from free-kicks and corners in the final third of the field."

* "He’s [Shaun Wright-Phillips] got a heart as big as his size, which isn’t big, but his heart’s bigger than that."

* "The problem in our country is that we use hindsight as our judge. When she [Margaret Thatcher] was in power, there were a lot of good things done, but people will always pick out bad things. She was a good lady."

We were talking about Keegan in the office today. "Ooh," said someone, "a friend of mine used to go out with him! I've got a load of snapshots of them on Cleethorpes beach!"

(i am not sure why this is relevant, but wanted to post it anyway)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't see O'Neill being interested in this. Main frustration at Celtic must be lack of money for players capable of Euro challenge. Why go to a club where he'd have even less?

Strachan seemed willing to take Scotland job if it had been offered so he seems a better bet.

frankiemachine, Friday, 11 March 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Strachan seemed willing to take Scotland job if it had been offered so he seems a better bet.

Until it hit the papers that he said it then he waffled about "maybe not the right time... couple of years... if the opportunity... I don't want to manage that bunch of diddies..."

Bookies have Strachan as favourite, closely followed by Stuart Pearce, Iain Dowie and Martin O'Neill. Liam Gallagher is 1000/1.

Keegan in shock Newcastle return

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44360000/gif/_44360332_brk_news_football_203x152.gif

Newcastle have confirmed that Kevin Keegan will make a dramatic return to manage the club.

The 56-year-old former Manchester City boss managed the Magpies from 1992 to 1997 and will return to St James' Park as Sam Allardyce's successor.

A statement on the club website said: "Kevin Keegan is returning to Newcastle United as manager."

More to follow.

yeah, I thought that might happen:

Keegan poised to approach Shearer

Kevin Keegan has revealed he will approach Alan Shearer about a role at Newcastle after taking over as manager.
Keegan was paraded at St James' Park after succeeding Sam Allardyce - and confirmed he will hold talks with the former Newcastle captain.

Mark G, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Funniest bit of his interview was when he said that going to the match was the only form of entertainment for Geordies "you know, like when people down south go to the theatre after a hard day at work."

aldo, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

I did not know that Kevin Keegan had a football circus on the outskirts of Glasgow. I am impressed. At least that answers my question about dog-breeding. If The Pinefox is looking at this thread, and sees that 7-inch cover, he will think he has opened his cupboard rather than accessed the world wide web by a super fast broadband connection.
