The Pink Panther movies - C or D, s&d

Just saw "The Pink Panther", hung-over and in a bathing robe, which felt very appropriate. It's always great when a movie that you loved as a kid, then sort of grew out of gets presented to you again and you notice, hey, I like this again! God, David Niven is great. And Claudia Cardinale! Whom I'd just seen two days ago in "Once Upon A Time In The West"!

I know mark s especially has suggested that Peter Sellers might not be much cop, and he might be right - some of the dullest parts in the movie are his responsibility. But he's so damn likeable, and when he brings teh funny, he *really* brings teh funny.

My fav scene (as a kid and now) remains the elderly italian gentleman trying to make his way across the road, as various cars carrying ppl in gorila suits and knight's outfits speed by, as well as a zebra. What a magnificent deadpan.

So, what say you? And are any of the sequels any cop?

all of the ones with Sellers... the rest are complete shit. Roberto Begini or what ever that elfs name is in one of them

While Sellers has good scenes in all of them, the only one I find consistently fine is A Shot in the Dark.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and they are making a new one with Steve Martin.

the one with the scene where he's swinging on the parallel bars and falls down the stairs. that's good.

A SHOT IN THE DARK yesssssssssssss!

score!, Friday, 11 March 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink panther = not very good because Sellers = not very good. He's alright in Dr Strangelove, but he blights everything else I've seen him in, Pink Panther included.

I watched a Shot in the Dark again last year - got some but not many laughs out of it. Same with The Pink Panther.. I remember the Return of the Pink Panther being funny when I was a kid - so, one more try with the Pink Panther movies before I say outright dud.

The song is groovy, too! Not the theme, everyone knows *that's* awesome. The one with vocals, that they dance to at the ski resort.

God, Steve Martin. "Let's Get Small" remains my all-time fav comedy album...I weep for that guy's career.

he blights everything else I've seen him in

b-b-but "the party"!

"Does your dog bite?"

"No."

[dog bites Clouseau]

"I thought you said your dog does not bite."

"That... is not my dog."

Best line in any movie ever; never equalled and will never be surpassed.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazing early Sellers role = I'm All Right, Jack

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha i was going to come on here and cite the quote that the mad puffin just typed above. we used to do an impression of it all the time, with the overblown snotty french accent and such...

I'm pretty sure that joke was a hundred years old when Blake Edwards filched it.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Clouseau comes home and Cato tries to beat him up" scenes are CLASSIC, as is the notion of Clouseau slowly driving Dreyfus to total batshit insanity. The rest = not that good, really.
