A few weeks ago at the courthouse in Tyler (east Texas) a guy opened fire killing his ex-wife, a baliff, and then an bystander who carried a concealed weapon and tried to stop the guy. Although he was an excellent shot the good samitarian didn't know the shooter was wearing a vest and was promptly shot dead for his efforts.

Following a car pursuit I beleive the shooter killed an officer before he was finally brought down.

well it was sensationalistic and it worked cuz my first reaction glaring 'BREAKING NEWS: ATLANTA' and reporters noting relations to 9/11 and 'ATLANTA UNDER LOCKDOWN' is to suspect gee maybe a terrorist attack happened in atlanta (god knows it wouldn't be the first time) and o yeah most of my relatives and many of my friends live/work in atlanta and cnn felt the need to psyche me out about the possibility of their being in danger so i wouldn't flip by their channel. assholes.

A friend reports that Rush Limbaugh somehow managed to blame this on Hillary Clinton. I guessed he used it on his show yesterday as a jumping-off point to squeal about Hillary wanting to restore voting rights to ex-felons. Something like, oh, is this the kind of guy she wants to give voting rights to?

Hurricane season hasn't been very active in the past two years down south, I can imagine GA gets some of that water as they move inland.

I heard the NC mountains supply water via melting snow but there hasn't been much snow.

I'm very pleased with my folks that they took out their front lawn a while back in favor of flowers and plants that suit a dryer California climate -- all the more important since where they're at has also faced water shortages in recent years. (Backyard hadn't been a lawn to start with, happily.)

Why Grow Grass?
You may have asked yourself this question at one time or another. It's like a child's question such as: why is the sky blue? We grow grass for one reason: we can mow it and it survives, even thrives. Any other plant, even most other grasses would die after being mowed with any regularity. There are over 10,000 species of grass, yet only about 50 of those are suitable for use in a lawn.

Why can lawn grasses be regularly mown without dying, and still maintain a healthy and attractive appearance? Unlike most plants, lawn grasses grow from the base of the plant, well below the sharpened rotating lawn mower blade. Other plants grow at the tips that don't respond well to being repeatedly cut.

The process of mowing is actually reducing the plants leaves and cutting down its ability to use photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process that takes carbon dioxide from the air and turns it into carbohydrates that the plant uses for food. When the plant looses some of this ability, it overcompensates by producing additional leaves. The result: an even thicker, denser lawn.

So, the answer to the question "why grow grass?" is: because it's the one plant that adapts best for the environment we've created for ourselves.
