someone explain to me how this works...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:51 (fifteen years ago) link

the horsey moves two along and one across, the dirty vicar moves diagonally, freddy mercury goes as far as and to whatever direction he damn well pleases, whereas elvis is so fat he can only move one square at a time. castles, on the other hand despite being inanimate objects, can move in straight lines, the pwns move forward and then get killed, hence the name

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

i was really disappointed that there was no freddy mercury piece....

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry, chess, I mean! I'm not used to playing a new game!

(Anyone fancy an ISC date at lunchtime? SOWPODS, 13 mins void?)

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:49 (fifteen years ago) link

this is a really good interface. all it needs is a duel-style face-slap animation to pop up when you challenge someone.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:55 (fifteen years ago) link

God. I am blushing at my desk about how awful I am at chess. I might go to Chess and Bridge at lunchtime to pick up a beginners guide to NOT BEING BLUDDY AWFUL at chess. Aw maaan.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i am now making it worse, yaaaaaay

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 11:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I have played the Jamaican chess champion, and received a total pWning(he's a busker in the city streets of Melbourne) It rocks out, I desire a chess clock.

Nellie (nellskies), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 12:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm on the ropes against both greg and ken now - thrilling stuff

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I am enjoying this.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't get it, can't the castle take the queen here to avoid the resignation?

chess game analysis is abt as dorky as it gets (edit: well, there is go game analysis...)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:34 (fifteen years ago) link

castle takes queen, horsey to F7 checkmate

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:36 (fifteen years ago) link

sounds like a draw tho w the queens one never know what u cn get up to

calstars, Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:15 (two months ago) link

there's no win, be the gent and offer a draw imo

ban laggy jazzer (imago), Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:29 (two months ago) link

qf6+ is the best draw offer obv

ban laggy jazzer (imago), Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:30 (two months ago) link

imo you are winning here but i don't have a solution (and i'm not sure i should give it to you if i came up with one). my advice is to get an advantageous position through zugzwang - right now the movements opponent can make are limited. you don't need forcing checkmate - just small improvements and force him to move into a bad position. i don't like Bf8 bc Qf7 gives him initiative and room to breath but maybe look at Bf6? Qg1+ is a resource to use at the right time too i think.

Mordy, Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:40 (two months ago) link

actually i think Bf8 just loses the bishop after Qf7 king can't save the bishop

Mordy, Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:42 (two months ago) link

Ugh
Yeah

calstars, Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:48 (two months ago) link

we bumped elbows and called it a draw

Poor bishop’s fatal flaw: he can never cross the tracks

calstars, Sunday, 12 April 2020 19:29 (one month ago) link

I've been trying to learn how to play the sicilian. its so hard to remember all those moves - and then people do the wrong moves and you cant remember how to punish them. but still. you do get some fun games.

cajunsunday, Sunday, 12 April 2020 21:32 (one month ago) link

i play da siciliano feel like rather than try to remember all the moves just pick a line u like and play it a bunch and youll get the hang of it, i recently compared what id been doing to theory and it pretty much made sense tho it wasnt the primary line for the variation i was playing but it was a known playable one

lag∞n, Monday, 13 April 2020 00:24 (one month ago) link

its the khan w queens knight on d7 where the main line has it on c6

lag∞n, Monday, 13 April 2020 00:27 (one month ago) link

Anyone following the Magnus Carlsen Invitational? Its the final between Magnus and Hikaru in half an hour.

https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tournaments/magnus-carlsen-invitational-2020-final-4/2/1/1

cajunsunday, Sunday, 3 May 2020 13:32 (one month ago) link

he got blood from a stone with that win there

imago, Sunday, 3 May 2020 14:55 (one month ago) link

Yeah. He's a genius at endgames.

cajunsunday, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:01 (one month ago) link

yeah magnus signature is prob winning seemingly drawn games, kinda lame signature! no offense

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:06 (one month ago) link

there's a video where he takes bartholomew's end games you must know test and he says he never explicitly studied them and claims endgame is sorta a weakness for him iirc but then dominates the test either by knowing all the endgames or more bc he's able to somehow calculate a bunch of them on the fly and comes up with some solutions that aren't the given ones by the bartholomew program it's a cool thing to watch tbh

Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:09 (one month ago) link

yeah i watched that its pretty nuts bartholomews all do you know the blhdy blah formulation and magnus is all no whats that and bartholomew starts to explain it and magnus is like yeah thats just obvious

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:13 (one month ago) link

btw i hate this thread title what do u guys think about changing it to "ilx chess club"

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:16 (one month ago) link

i don't mind either way what the thread is called.

i should work more on my endgames. the cool thing about being great at endgames is that a) at my level i've noticed a lot of ppl aren't great at them so it'll give me a huge leg up and b) a critical strategy when going up a piece or a few pawns is knowing how to crush the endgame with that advantage but if you don't really know it v well it's too easy to still make stupid blunders even in totally winnable end games.

Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:23 (one month ago) link

I don't mind the thread title, and recognize it as a nod to the Yes thread, but I'm not married to it.

Another endgame in Game 2 but it looks like Hikaru has a chance...

cajunsunday, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:40 (one month ago) link

blood from a stone 2: revenge

imago, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:45 (one month ago) link

What’s the problem with the thread title?

calstars, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:18 (one month ago) link

Don’t be changing thread titles just for UX purposes

silby, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:41 (one month ago) link

Frankly embarrassing that lagoon would suggest changing a 15 year old thread title

silby, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:42 (one month ago) link

carlsen takes it up a level again

imago, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:42 (one month ago) link

Lagoon doesn’t like the word “hot” or the band yes, which one could it be

calstars, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:44 (one month ago) link

we have another chess thread iirc we could use that one instead

Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:53 (one month ago) link
