SECRET INDIE SHAME

thegardencentre: last night, i downloaded
thegardencentre: kings of leon, and razorlight
runmdc79: why?
thegardencentre: l made me do it
runmdc79: they are both awful
thegardencentre: the kings of leon was terrible, like a constipated japanese anime version of rod stewart
runmdc79: ricky t and i walked past them playing at glasto
thegardencentre: razorlight would have been just mediocre if it wasnt for the terrible singer
runmdc79: and they were 2nd on the bill, and their crowd was huge
runmdc79: and we were like "i can't believe they're this popular"
runmdc79: and rickyt said "you mean the Wiley album isn't the biggest release of the year?"
thegardencentre: those bands are all very strange, because they are sort of fashionable, but deeply unfashionable at same time
thegardencentre: could never be played in shoreditch!
runmdc79: there is a bit of a division
runmdc79: like you have razorlight, kings of leon etc on one side
runmdc79: never in shoreditch
runmdc79: and franz ferdinand, bloc party, maybe the killers on the other
runmdc79: who are totally hoxton-friendly
thegardencentre: true
thegardencentre: killers are the midpoint
thegardencentre: i have never heard bloc party
runmdc79: yes
thegardencentre: and id nevber heard razorlight till lat night
runmdc79: apparently they sound like adorable
thegardencentre: haha
runmdc79: i don't think you'd like them though
thegardencentre: i only like californian dayglo christian acid childrens music from 1970
runmdc79: actually, the real divider is whether or not daft punk would remix you
runmdc79: like, imagine kings of leon - dirty swamp boogie (rex the dog mix)
thegardencentre: lynn told me id like kings of leon because they are hilbilly(!)
thegardencentre: I DONT HEAR ANY LOUVIN BROTHERS
thegardencentre: you know that killers song, indie rock and roll for me/
runmdc79: i have heard that killers song so many times in so many good contexts that i'm now starting to like it
runmdc79: its annoying
thegardencentre: HAHAHAHAHAHA
thegardencentre: I LIKE IT TOO
thegardencentre: though i havent heard it in any good contexts

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

once someone mentioned something about indie guilt. i think there was a thread with one or two answers on it

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 13 March 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

quick, someones coming, put the laurent garnier mix back on, before they come in

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 13 March 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Razorlight album. The shame.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 13 March 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I tell you, just surrender to the killers album!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 13 March 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

What a fucking AWFUL idea. Can I kill them in an ironic gesture?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 March 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, you want to kill the killers? shocking!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 13 March 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.hkfilm.net/killer.gif

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 March 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Razorlight bore me. The Killers whilst they annoy me for their weird inconsistency, are quite fun. I wouldn't mind seeing them live. I don't know much about Kings of Leon. Someone at work went to see them play at Brookes Uni and informed me that they are not as hairy as they used to be.

I don't like the idea of Indie Guilt. And ppl who now confess to hate indie thye one loved and and now love pop, well it's just snobbery only t'other way round. I have never heard a convincing argument to the contrary.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have one, maybe they hate the indie they once loved and love pop!

gareth and matt however deserve only shame. that killers song is so so so bad. when the album came into the shop it was like

Boss: "Ronan come and listen to this"
Ronan: "What is it? Oh I hate them"
Boss: "I think they're crap too but listen to this!"
Ronan: "erm.....ok........................*plays track*"

Ronan: "oh my god! ugh.........what??? *makes face like shelbyville guy in simpsons biting a lemon*, no I can't listen to this, it's just too bad!"

2 minutes later

"I have to hear that again did he actually sing that? ugh! UGH! NOOOO!"

It made me embarassed to be a human being.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"I said maybe baby please"

Mr Flowers must have slaved over those lyrics...

stew, Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Three years of ROCK BEING BACK has given us just one good band, and the worst top tens since, oooh, 1993. Discuss.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The other problem here is that the mythology for these bands is so fucking dull you have to wonder what their press officers are doing. 50 Cent got shot nine times, Johnny Borrell... had one shandy too many at a Christmas party once and was sick on his shoes. Well done all involved.

Whatever happened to The Vines, anyway?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

they released a second album. everyone went 'meh'.

whatever happened to Alien Ant Farm?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

they released a second album. everyone went "meh". it is now available for £3.50 on Amazon.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Alien Ant Farm just didn't do anymore wacky covers.

I'm not sure if I've heard Razorlight or not. Or a whole Kings of Leon song. Or the whole of that Killers song, that goes "she was your girlfriend, and now he's your boyfriend, they act like a neurofen".

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

kings of leon, razorlight and franz ferdinand are all shit.

i like that the killers song that goes "girl friend boy friend etc".

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

why is alien ant farm being discussed in the secret indie shame thread?

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone at work went to see them play at Brookes Uni and informed me that they are not as hairy as they used to be.

haha mark isn't that the lyrics of one of their songs???

(sorry i didn't show for the chalets btw :( - i kind of drifted to sleep when i got home and then woke up it was like 11 :( !)

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I like Idlewild.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the girlfriend/boyfriend song was the song we were talking about.

I have always held the theory that no one actually *hates* the music they used to like. If I am ever DJing to Ronan I will test this scientifically by dropping a random Ryan Adams track into a set of straight electrohouse and see what happens.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it wasnt that one. it was the indie rock'n'roll for me one.

im playing bo hansson now

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to know who Dom's 'one good band' are. My guess would be the Futureheads.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I am playing LFO now. It still hasn't washed the blood and shit from my hands.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Babyshambles?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to the Album Leaf, I guess that's quite indie.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"straight electrohouse", haha

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i just remembered The Basement. i had a song of theirs up on my old mp3 site.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to know who Dom's 'one good band' are. My guess would be the Futureheads.

Maroon 5.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"straight on straight gay electrohouse"

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the way it says "SECRET INDIE SHAM..." at the bottom of my screen (what do you call those things??)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to Kings Of Leon's "The Bucket" for the second time ever here. Real time reaction as follows...

Intro - OK. Drums are a little sloppy.
First Verse - This guy sounds like a muppet.
Chorus - "Eighteen, balding, stop?" WHAT? And why are they trying to harmonize?
Outro From Chorus - Tighten up those fucking drums!
Second Verse - "I hate the way you talk / you Japanese thing?" LYRIC SHEET PLEASE
Second Chorus - Meh?
Guitar Break - I didn't realize that Special Needs Southern Rock was the new black.
Outro - Huh????

Wow. Officially baffled here.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I have always held the theory that no one actually *hates* the music they used to like. If I am ever DJing to Ronan I will test this scientifically by dropping a random Ryan Adams track into a set of straight electrohouse and see what happens.

Ronan used to like Ryan Adams?!?!?!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

once someone mentioned something about indie guilt. i think there was a thread with one or two answers on it

I hate seeing that thread again, it makes me dizzy seeing all those posts. And then I see my posts - I think I was drunk that particular night.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

he was erm.........better than the Killers!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

omg, it wasn't even a joke. Ronan likes Ryan Adams and my world has imploded!

(he is better than the Killers though. someone gave me a copy of Gold and while I didn't think it was good or anything, I never got round to getting rid of it.)

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex likes Ryan Adams too!!!!

WITCH-HUNT TIME

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

his first solo album is good! "heartbreaker". before he did the rolling stones type stuff and the piano ballads. emmylou harris is on a few tracks and it's really really good.

I would still listen to it if I didn't listen to downtempo electronic stuff for my downtempo needs.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Greg: while I didn't think it was good or anything!!!!

I certainly do not like Ryan Adams! I am just lazy! I can't remember any of the song titles on that album!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

my other excuse is I was only old enough to get into clubs once I turned 18.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember the vintage early Ronan posts! :)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

please, please, please nobody start linking to stuff, use the search function all you like!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, wow, links please!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
alexmacpherson: by the way
runmdc79: yes?
alexmacpherson: i've got a request
alexmacpherson: i'm sort of ashamed
runmdc79: intriguing
alexmacpherson: what's that thing that guitarists have, that shows you where to put your fingers?
runmdc79: tabs?
alexmacpherson: that's it
alexmacpherson: do you know any good tab sites?
runmdc79: wtf? what for?
alexmacpherson: my flatmate has a guitar. i've sort of started learning
alexmacpherson: so far i can play
alexmacpherson: wonderwall
alexmacpherson: disarm by the smashing pumpkins
alexmacpherson: country feedback by rem
alexmacpherson: and i want to learn
alexmacpherson: SHE BANGS THE DRUMS by the stone roses
runmdc79: HAHAHAHA!!!!!
alexmacpherson: it's got the word 'bangs' in the title! it's NOT INDIE!
alexmacpherson: and the singer is fit

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:02 (twenty years ago)

haha. you know, in the first post on this thread, i wasn't sure who thegardencentre was until i got to this line:

thegardencentre: i only like californian dayglo christian acid childrens music from 1970

and then i was like oh hi gareth.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Precisely what is wrong with "boys with guitars"?

It's amazing how threads get revived...

Anna (Anna), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

though it has facilitated my descent into a weird lysergic depression which i cant seem to shake...

http://www.redhotjazz.com/hotclubfrance2.jpg

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

yes but it's not an indie guitar:

1) it has balloons on it. balloons = pop
2) it is owned by kate, who is a girl. girls cancel out guitars everyone knows that

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:16 (twenty years ago)

is the Lex rockophobic?

also who is the style-cliched twee indie chick that looks like velma from scooby doo ? [looks like the type that belongs to sinister mailing list ]

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

It's the most life-affirming piece of music ever recorded.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)
