No Boho

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it's what cam'ron says as pre-emptive fire whenever he wears pink or purple. it has caught on in a sad way.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I submit instead "YES homo!" We can make buttons.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it's conversational punctuation that means "but i'm not gay"

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

as in "no homo, but I have a big cock in my mouth right now."

i really like something about this phrase, though. maybe because i don't hear it very much.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard this THRICE on the street in toronto last visit

jones (actual), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't heard this, but i'm among ppl who neither wear pink not listen to cam'ron.

do you say it to...anyone who looks at you?

f--gg (gcannon), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

NOR, above.

anyway the maxim magazine get out clause for faggot clothes is "regular colors ok, food bad, so pink = yes, salmon = no"

f--gg (gcannon), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

My boyfriend made a button that says "Does this dick in my mouth make me look gay?". I should wear it on an all pink outfit and use "no homo" constantly . . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i find it heartening to know that this isn't as widespread as i'd feared.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I love 'no homo', all dipset slang is pretty much hilarious. btw i know some ppl who have taken to replacing it with 'no karamo', so named for the DL brotha on this season of the Real World

i've occasionally used (no euro) to reaffirm that anything positive I say about a European band doesn't come from some kind of sadsack anglophiliac tendency. That I don't think Kylie is better than Beyonce or whatever.

Example: Pulp were a rewarding singles band (no euro).

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Song 2" is awesome (no euro)!

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

might as well get these out of the way:

pro-yahoogroups -> no majordomo
anti-microhouse -> no luomo
anti-pope -> no duomo

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

now please, no momo.

I still think "Yes Homo" should be an ad campaign, perhaps featuring pro-gay celebrities.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit of looking around suggests that it's used by two not nesseccarily distinct set of people. One is people who are using it, or are claiming to, in order to laugh at Cam'Ron, a man who is terrified of anything he says being viewed as homosexual, and who is also attempting to patent his own shade of pink. The source link is on a site called Cocaine Blunts . Now on the one hand, it's a thing worth mocking, on the other hand, no-one trusts the youth of today, it's-clever-doesn't-mean-it's-good, "did we suffer through the nineties for nothing?" etc etc.

The other group are actual honest to god homophobic hip hop fans and bloggers, and the main point of reference here is a guy called bol, who it may not suprise you to hear, is a prick. Though bizarrely the first hate-out on his site mentions "teh ghey", which is a phrase I've only heard from Starry Sarah before. The internet is a small and strange place.

What both sides have in common is a new catchphrase, and glee at using it. They can both be pretty inventive at finding phrasings for innocuous sentences that end up prurient (a trait I have great love for myself) and no-one's getting killed over it, so it's not all that big a deal unless you believe in progress or something.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

this is from a post on whether beyonce or ashanti is hotter:

"Note that I won't generally (unless I think I've really got a chance at scoring), and didn't in this case, refer to a chick as "pretty."...Also note that this post in no way endorses a preference for the music of either of these so-called artists. In other words, no homo."

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, nevermind, this has got to be a parody or something.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, that site's a mooktastrophe. but besides this guy, I've never known anyone to use 'no homo' in any way other than to elicit lolz. i personally find the way that karamo has been turned into a slur to be much more disturbing, though maybe i'm alone on that one

Anderson Cooper Speaks!

From the June '05 Blender, re: Scissor Sisters:
"I've known the lead singer, Jake Shears, since before he was in the band - we met through mutual friends."

So I think that's pretty official then.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Saturday, 21 May 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Jake Shears gave me his number last time he was in Vancouver but I'm too scared to call it so it just sits there, like the detonation code for a big pink nuclear bomb.

‏@noz 11h
it's insensitive and it sucks how actual homophobic types latched onto it but im just saying there's a non-malicious cultural context for it

is noz right?

乒乓, Sunday, 2 June 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

ya really sucks how actual homophobes latches onto a homophobic slur like that

flopson, Sunday, 2 June 2013 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

he's basically implying that rappers and the average rap listener are too dumb to understand the malice behind terms like that. and while i guess i'm sympathetic to the idea that fundamentalism and bigotry can flourish in poverty - that the impoverished can be exploited/indoctrinated - i'm not sure why it's harmful to call a spade a spade.

his point that "critics" or white dudes on twitter policing what is essentially black culture is well-taken though. i'm not sure criticizing ross or camron or whoever and understanding the context it comes from are necessarily mutually exclusive

k3vin k., Sunday, 2 June 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

when did noz stop making no homo jokes? has he?

flopson, Sunday, 2 June 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

I just can't get over the idea that it's tut tut so unfortunate and perhaps in a better world avoidable that 'no homo' was co-opted by non-rappers for an agenda less pure and innocent than wordplay

some dude, Sunday, 2 June 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not sure why it's harmful to call a spade a spade.

乒乓, Sunday, 2 June 2013 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

A lot of us just grew up on the playground calling shovels "spades", DJP. It had its roots in a race-neutral game in which we kept pushing the shovels nose-down in the dirt to assert our superiority.
