more about science and ugliness

something i saw on tv the other night -- apparently men are genetically hardwired to find blonde hair more attractive than any other hair color. something about them being more "fertile," i.e. fitter to propagate the species.

um... is this where i invoke godwin's law?

Blonde hair is a recessive gene! There is biological imperative to consider!

I am guilty of consistently saying "I'm not so into blondes." But I realized just the other day that the last three gf's I've had have been blonde. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. I'm so stupid, it hurts. wtf

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I dated a string of blondes in the 90s and my sister was like, "so, you like blondes, huh?"
And I was like, "No, blondes like me."

Huk-L, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

For a limited period of time, that is.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This strikes me as being complete bullshit, at least in terms of my own personal experience.

I don't like blondes and I've got the brunette to prove it.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

mixing science and this kinda stuff is always trouble. it makes everyone (often women) defensive, depressed, and insecure and is pretty inconsequential. according to evolutionary law, homosexuals wouldn't exist and men who want to marry each other would be completely unheard of.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I can honestly say that I was always an equal opportunity slut. I have a penchant for blondes, brunettes, redheads, short hair, long hair, curly hair, straight hair, tall, short, curvy, and slim women of any ethnic background, provided they have the right mischievous grin and a woeful lack of taste in men. People who have a single 'type', in my entirely unscientific opinion, are ususally conflating a person with an antecedant, which shows a lamentable dearth of imagination or a sad lack of confidence.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the funniest thing is when you have a type in retrospect, but it has nothing to do with what you conciously think you like.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

which shows a lamentable dearth of imagination or a sad lack of confidence

Very much OTM there Michael.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Having a 'type' just means having a preference like you have a preference for a certain type of music or food or whatever. People who try to turn this into some sort of moral issue (even if the word used is 'imagination') are deluding themselves.

Je O'Connel, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is...if you have "a type" then you're, like, basically admitting defeat. Condemning yourself to failed relationships. If you date a string of similar people, you're WRONG. Because, like, if you date someone, and it doesn't work out, WHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR SOMEONE JUST LIKE THAT?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Because tall girls are sexy. That's why.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't argue with that.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not really into blonds or medium brown or redheads. I like only dark brown or black hair for the most part. There is also not a single famous person I can think of that I actually think of as sexy who is not a porn star.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yer warped, kid.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of any sexy porn stars.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is that warped? Some porn stars have a sexy look to me. Most "beautiful" celebrities don't.

OH! I Just thought of one: Jami Gertz-- the woman from Less Than Zero who is now the wife on Still Standing.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not attracted to blonde men at all. I much prefer dark men with dark eyes.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Do not for one moment think that I don't find conventionally sexy celebs attractive. I often do. But sexy and beautiful aren't the same thing to me. Many beautiful women aren't particularly sexy and many of the people I've lusted after, aren't conventionally 'beautiful'.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Sophia Loren!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Men who pursue a multitude of women fit neatly into two categories. Some seek their own subjective and unchanging dream of a woman in all women. Others are prompted by desire to possess the endless variety of the objective female world. The obsession of the former is lyrical: what they seek in women is themselves, their ideal, and since an ideal is by definition something that can never be found, they are disappointed again and again. The disappointment that propels them from woman to woman gives their inconstancy a kind of romantic excuse, so that many sentimental women are touched by their unbridled philandering. The obsession of the latter is epic, and women see nothing the least bit touching in it: the man projects no subjective ideal on women, and since everything interests him, nothing can disappoint him. This inability to be disappointed has something scandalous about it. The obsession of the epic womanizer strikes people as lacking in redemption (redemption by disappointment). Because the lyrical womanizer always runs after the same type of woman, we even fail to notice when he exchanges one mistress for another. His friends perpetually cause misunderstanding by mixing up his lovers and calling them by the same name. In pursuit of knowledge, epic womanizers (and of course Tomas belongs in their ranks) turn away from conventional feminine beauty, of which they quickly tire, and inevitably end up as curiosity collectors. They are aware of this and a little ashamed of it, and to avoid causing their friends embarrassment, they refrain from appearing in public with their mistress." 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being'

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

conventionally 'beautiful'

There's your problem, Michael. Is it your convention or society's? I find conventionally "beautiful" women often plain, boring and sometimes downright goofy-looking.

This is funny to me because just the other day, a dopey coworker showed me a model ad in Glamour and said, "Don't you wish [your girlfriend] would suddenly wake up one day and look like this?" Stupid question, true. But, even if she wasn't my girlfriend, I prefer her look to this tall, skinny-legged model.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a majority of men would agree with you, but that's because models in Glamour ads are targeted at women (and making them feel insecure/inferior/"unfeminine") rather than at men.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Sci-Fi Convention Beautiful!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, sorry I didn't mean to imply that Michael had "a problem." Poor wording on my part.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

If women who are considered beautiful by the majority are sexy to me, that is what I find attractive. I have nothing agaist models per se. My ex-wife was a model and naturally very svelte. It's a type but not the only one I fancy and I am as receptive to movement, personality, humor, etc... A strange, but appropriate example of this is Greta Garbo. When I see her photo, I find her alluring. When I see her act, most often I do not. Barring any love-at-first-sight evenings in the company of zombie belles or women in the throes of lockjaw, I'm unlikely to find anybody sexy for their appearance alone.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah there's a lot of qualities besides static appearance. I like the way a "real" woman moves and I don't care if it's graceful, so long as it's not over-calculated. Also, something in the eyes turns me off most typical beauties. I can go for quiet confidence or aggressive feistiness not borne of confidence, but am generally not attracted to confident aggressors. I am attracted to sad eyes, mad eyes, happy eyes and calm eyes, but not blank eyes or bratty eyes.
