There is no Harry Shearer thread so I will start one

Since he's currently the guest host blogger at TalkingPointsMemo. I actually feel a bit down about the fact that the guy has done so much and I feel like I've barely scraped the surface via Derek Smalls and his work on The Simpsons.

hey, hey. it's ok.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 March 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, bless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 March 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone listen to his radio show, Le Show?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

He is a dick IRL from personal observations as well as stories from my friend who works with him on the Simpsons.

He was a guest at a Tonight Show taping in 1994 (w/ Drew Barrymore & Pavement).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

...that I was at, he was not amusing at all.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

le show is ok its basically just him reading articles and doing a "bush talks to bush" bit then he plays like 2 really bad songs.

I feel my role in ILX is really like luke-warm water.

If I touch you when I'm asleep I'll piss myself?

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

He's smart and can be funny -- I listened to Le Show when it was carried in NYC -- but he's mined the same veins a bit too often, and can be more clever than funny. Always loved his Rather and Brokaw impressions tho.

Extra credit for quitting SNL... twice.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, yeah, the Rather and Brokaw impressions are pretty good. I like Le Show, usually just have it on the background and sort of half pay attention while I do laundry or whatever on Sunday nights. He's at his best when he's making fun of Hollywood / show-biz, I think. Chaki otm, the music can be pretty lame. and you get to hear "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" every week.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, i've heard what you say about him to be true.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Same here on the Scherer interactions. I've heard the same.

I have never told anyone how much Le Show disappoints me, so I'm going to take the opportunity to do so now.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, "Shearer"

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Take heart, C. You are among friends.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

:D

I desperately don't want to dislike the guy, though. He has his moments, not to mention all his excellent work with Christopher Guest. Perhaps he's like ye olde Dana Carvey: good in ensemble work, not so much solo.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

Has anyone seen this guy's Katrina docu "The Big Uneasy"? I just read Roger Ebert's review of it, and I kind of can't believe it exists!

free inappropriate education (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 14 June 2011 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

OTOH I had no idea this guy ever did anything other than be a funny guy in front of a camera.

free inappropriate education (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 14 June 2011 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

For us New Orleans music nerds that's not news. He's had a place in the Big Easy for awhile and has been writing editorials online about the city for quite some time.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

But actually I've never seen his doc though

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

three years pass...

Good WTF interview from a few weeks ago. Good match for Maron in cantankerousness, and good stories. Cautionary tale of always feeling you're the smartest guy in the room, but sometimes he probably was.

eight years pass...

?

I think Harry Shearer just had a stroke on air. He was reading clippings on his public radio show, and he couldn't make the words out, and he went to music, repeating a record he'd played before, then the broadcast stopped. I certainly hope he had access to care in time.

Damn, that’s rough. I hope he’s okay.

He also seems the type to want to DJ as long as he is physically capable
