It didn't look like there was a thread for this yet! But a few mentions elsewhere.

I got up really early this morning and went to go get this. The guy at the counter had a punisher T-shirt and gave me a special limited edition case because apparently i was the first to buy it from there or something. He also said i'd enjoy it.

I've clocked about 3 hours gametime now and i'm just gearing up for a 2nd go at the first proper boss (a gigantic..uh...thing!). So far the game is fantastic though.

Anybody else playing/played it?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago) link

RE4! I finished it a couple of weeks ago, it was my favorite gaming experience of the current console generation for sure. I haven't played anything since (except some Mega Man and Sonic collection) because I don't know what could follow it up!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I got through the game just fine (the difficulty level is PERFECT), but my complete uselessness at the shooting gallery game and the bonus games make me think that I'm actually not very good. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:22 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG, they should make multiplayer RE4 where one player is human and the other player(s) controls the zombie villagers!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah the difficulty level is just fine for me.

My eyes hurt though. I haven't played a game that intensely for a while. I didn't notice any loading really as well, which is nice.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:31 (nineteen years ago) link

God i am so English. The only time i've felt scared so far is when it started raining. I was all like "oh shit, now there's a storm".

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha. Yeah, there's a bit where you return to the village square except it's REALLY dark and rainy (and bear-trappy and zombiey) that was one of the scariest parts of the game for me.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I didn't figure out the shooting-bear-traps thing til like halfway through the game.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

YOU CAN SHOOT THE BEAR TRAPS?!?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Now I feel better.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Gah, where was my head.

Btw, I still feel oddly guilty about getting through the last three or four boss fights solely on the basis of the rocket launcher.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't wait til i can afford that. I always almost shoot the weapons guy to death because he looks so damn creepy.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha! But what if you need to come back to him?! And why is he Australian?!?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:41 (nineteen years ago) link

The rocket launcher is way less fun than the shotgun, which takes the place of the Doom shotgun as best video game gun ever, or the fully pimped out handgun. Max firing speed + max ammo capacity + max firepower = the crunkness.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah the handgun is awesome. I like to just carry that around and pretend that Leon = Jack Bauer (from 24).

Did anybody else kill the wolf at the beginning that looked like it needed help? I was scared that it'd bite me so i unloaded a clip at it.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago) link

That's fucked up. Puppyshooter.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Also it shows up and helps out with the first boss fight. Only, you know, if you didn't shoot it.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:55 (nineteen years ago) link

You're a very bad man, Hari.
Yeah, you're sick.

I felt really bad after shooting the cows. And chickens.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I shot a couple chickens, I couldn't get the cows to die, but i didn't want to waste shotgun bullets, so maybe that works better. I tried to hobble one by shooting it in the leg with the handgun but it didn't work.
That was good thinking though, it ensures that it can't chase after you.

Zombie-cows were a huge missed opportunity in RE4.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:04 (nineteen years ago) link

My first instinct was to try and tip the cows!

Also, I did pop the merchant in the head once but it was right after I had saved so I just resetted and he's still there in my game. It's not worth killing him, he just dies and then you don't have a merchant in that location anymore.

Zombie-cows are a huge missed opportunity in several areas of human endeavour, not just RE4, dude.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 March 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Touche!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought that there must be some way i could ride the cows in the first village. I spent a good 15-20 minutes trying to find out how.

Also:

I am at the bit where you have to choose what path to take: Loads of people or that giant thing.

What does ILX advise?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I took the giant path. I felt kind of guilty about that too because I didn't even kill the giant, I just found the door key and ran away from it.

Take the people path and let me know how it goes.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I've tried both now:

First time the villagers killed me fairly quickly and i almost shotgunned that girls head off.

second time (giant reduxe version) - I shot the boulder down and it trapped the girl over the otherside while i safely (but frustratingly) heard her perish.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh Hari, how I envy all of the fantastic set pieces you have yet to experience. I shall enjoy vicariously reliving RE4 through this thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Like the Dads who go to their son's football matches and shout "go on my son, shoot it in the head with the shotgun".

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I took the villager path, it wasn't too bad.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:23 (nineteen years ago) link

In the end i went for the 'giant route' I just ran through his legs and through the doors. Easy peasy but it felt like i was cheating.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I've gone back and am now trying to kill the giant as well for the 15,000 ptas.
Also, there seems to be another rare treasure somewhere in there (I have the treasure map), I don't want to miss that.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:31 (nineteen years ago) link

haha!

i will do this when i get back from Bristol and really get stuck in on Sunday. PROMISE!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Though i might have to learn some acrobatics to take good pictures of me playing. But anything is possible.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, I don't think i can kill the giant without grenades or the TMP, but I DID manage to snag the purple gem that completes my elegant mask (the red one was in the villager path) which i sold for 20,000 ptas, w00t.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I think i'm missing a shitload of areas in this game. Each chapter end i've only killed like...10% of the enemy people. Though my style is quite stealthy kill and go - always keep moving.

Just reached the castle and i'm tempted to buy one of these new guns but that would involve trading in one of my old ones and invariably running out of ammo.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 10:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I just started playing this... I've played nearly two hours in and I feel like I should start it over just because I'm unsure if I've been making the most out of it.

Generally at the end of the two (or so) chapters I've played through I've got 80%+ kill rates. But I've only got about four bullets left, and I bought a TMP. But I am sad about that, because I wanted a shotgun. I was all... "hmm, I could get a rifle, but fuck that."

Everybody knows the shotgun is where it's at.

I also realised I've been missing all the treasure. Duh.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I kicked a mans head off, though. I feel pretty good about that.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

... And later I think I will have to go back and see what happens when I let that chainsaw guy take Leon's head off. I mean, the programmers went to all that trouble...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm halfway through my second playthough of the maingame, and I've just got A CHICAGO TYPEWRITER! Arrr. It makes a lovely big mess of everything.

Mercenaries mode is HARD. But I like it.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 19 March 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

There will be plenty of opportunities for chainsaw decapitation.

I never got any of the treasure maps, and hence I missed a lot of stuff I think. I rarely got any of the treasures that you're supposed to put other treasures into and sell for lots of $$$$.

I should probably play through this again at some point (and maybe save up for the infinite rocket launcher!).

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 19 March 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Here's a really good Weapon Analysis Guide for people wondering what weapons are really worth buying. It will save you a ton of ptas.

Also, here's the link to that and all the rest of the faqs for the game for quick reference:

Resident Evil 4 FAQs & Guides

I just killed the crazy blind prisoner in 3-1. You don't have to kill him but you get 15,000 ptas if you do. Just have him get his claw stuck in the wall and blast away, you can trick him with the bells.

The treasure maps are really worth it, you'll make the money back and then some very quickly.

But I am sad about that, because I wanted a shotgun. I was all... "hmm, I could get a rifle, but fuck that." Everybody knows the shotgun is where it's at.

There's a free shotgun in the main village! Also, you need that rifle (w/ the scope). Sniping is one of the most fun things in the whole game. Fuck the TMP. It's only really good for killing giants, but grenades are better for that anyway.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm playing for PS2 right now, hence my skipping through this thread without reading it. It's fun but seems way too easy, and I'm not even an "experienced gamer."

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

is it actually still scary like the original games, from screenshots it just looks like a fast paced shootem up to me.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

There's that whole extra Ada Wong chapter in the PS2 version! With ANSWERS to QUESTIONS! But I don't want to have to buy it again and replay it all, just to find them out. Bah.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:33 (eighteen years ago) link

x-post

It's faster paced and more streamlined than the originals, but the changes totally work still feels like Resident Evil. And yes, it's still quite scary and atmospheric!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

that should read "the changes totally work and still feel like Resident Evil." anyway, bottom line: its a rad game!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

But is it fun easy or boring easy, Nick?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:39 (eighteen years ago) link

okay i just ordered this. !

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I almost want to play it through on PS2 just for the new content. I can't imagine the controls would be as comfortable though.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:45 (eighteen years ago) link

It's pretty fun, but I was expecting something more...innovative based on the hype. It seems pretty standard to me. And the cut-scenes have the worst dialogue ever.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:47 (eighteen years ago) link

i've been playing this all day, one the most enjoyable games I think I've ever played. It does all seem strangely easy though.

Beautiful to look at, and there have been some great 'zombie' moments. Such as the part in the main village where you can hold up in the house by pushing furniture against the doors and windows.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:19 (eighteen years ago) link

The gamecube version is anything but easy. Especially 'mercenaries'. christ!

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Sunday, 20 November 2005 01:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I just think it's a bit generous with the ammo and health pick ups.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 20 November 2005 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

There's that whole extra Ada Wong chapter in the PS2 version! With ANSWERS to QUESTIONS!

How does this differ from the Ada Wong chapter in the Gamecube version?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 20 November 2005 03:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I wonder if the PS2 version has been lightened up a little.

As for the extras:

The content of the GameCube version is all intact here, but in addition to that, some key extras have been added. Chiefly among them is a side story called Separate Ways, which lets you play as the elegant, enigmatic spy Ada Wong as she finds herself in the same place at the same time as Leon, the hero of the story. In addition to featuring some slick new cutscenes and more than a few more hours of great gameplay, Separate Ways sheds new light onto some aspects of the storyline and explains why some of the things that happen to Leon are more than just happy coincidences. The difficulty in Separate Ways picks up at about where Resident Evil 4 leaves off, so Ada will have a tough fight ahead of her and will likely need to avoid as many enemies as she has to kill. As such, the feel of the action in this episode is different from the parts of Resident Evil 4 during which it takes place, even though Ada plays pretty much the same as Leon (though she's a little faster and gets to use a cool grapple gun). Overall, Separate Ways is a well produced and exciting bonus.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 20 November 2005 04:27 (eighteen years ago) link

That does sound like someone never played the Ada bonus on Gamecube (though maybe now it's available from the start instead of after you've played through it)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 20 November 2005 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

well it says (in the ps2 manual), there are 5 extra missions available exclusive to the playstation version when you finish the game.

took a rest from it yesterday and watched my mate play it instead, laughing at his struggle against the mad monks in the castle. Seriously good game.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 21 November 2005 09:15 (eighteen years ago) link

and i found out only last night that you can combine the treasure items to form more expensive pieces. Unlucky seeing as I've pretty much sold most of it already in bits. I may start this game again.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 21 November 2005 10:56 (eighteen years ago) link

That does sound like someone never played the Ada bonus on Gamecube

From IGN:

Beyond the technical feats, Ada's new Separate Ways mission is a real treat for gamers. Only after dedicating some serious time to the main mission and beating it will you unlock it, but once you do you open the way to learn more about the story than any GameCube RE4 player could have. Furthermore, there's even a custom-made new area that Capcom created just for RE4, making the mission more than just a simple sidequest through the same areas. The execution and presentation of this mission is quite detailed. As Ada, you'll have access to a more advanced stash of moves (like a grappling hook) and weapons, and you'll even have objectives that take place in the same time and space as Leon's. In the opening chapter, for example, you'll actually hear the chainsaw man chasing him down in the distance, and you'll find out exactly why those villagers clear town after the church bell rings. Interested? We thought so. It's a fine addition and reward for dedicated players.

I played the GC Ada levels. I didn't get a grappling hook. I didn't find out about the bell. And I don't think IGN are likely to have just made up things about "a custom-made new area".

The Wii is my first console since the PS1, and it's the first time I've played RE4, so I am pretty much blown away completely. I'm only about 4 hours in.
