Placenta: has anyone here eaten it?

It came up in two totally different conversations I had today.

Placenta is apparently considered the only true meat that is completely cruelty free (provided the birth thereof was not a forced one.)

I'm not exactly keen on the idea of dining on placenta myself, but I figure there's a chance that someone here must know someone who knew someone who had it before.

Ok, I remember there was a Straight Dope piece on this:

Is there really such a thing as ... placenta stew?

Oh give me a fucking break. If I hear one more thing like this, I'm gonna eat a fucking vegan.

I imagine it tastes more organ-y than most people would like.

I know a girl named Oona. Her parents ate her placenta Teriyaki style, no shit.

A weird Romanian couple living down the street from me during my childhood were said to speak no English. And they hired my friend Matteo to come and help them address letters and make shopping-lists. He'd always come out looking slightly shell-shocked, and told us not to make him talk about the terribleness of his job. One summer Mrs. Wierd Romanian Lady died, and Mr. Weird Romanian Man had her cremated and kept her in a jar on top of the refrigerator. He'd have Matteo take her down for him at the beginning of every visit and go into the other room to do the chores. Before Matteo left, Mr. Weird Romenian Man would have Matteo put his wife back on the fridge. Matteo realized after a year that Mr. Weird Romanian man was putting small bits of his wife's bone-meal into his oatmeal and eating the woman for breakfast.

three years pass...

!!!

Placenta Cocktail:
1/4 cup raw placenta
8oz V-8 juice
2 ice cubes
1/2 cup carrot.
Blend at high speed for 10 seconds

...

I really want to know what context would arise where a Bloody Placenty would seem refreshing and ideal.

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

the lasagna I just ate is seriously thinking about making a reappearance

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

Most of the placenta recipes floating around are intended for consumption by the new Mom. Placentophagia has been around for ages and some of the benefits are supposedly a reduced chance of PPD and risk of hemorrhaging. Some women bake it and then grind it up and put it into capsules. I don't know - it's pretty gruesome any way you do it.

HI DERE, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

Wasnt there a korean (i think?) movie where an actress ate placenta to look young?

Jibe, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

Ok, no, googling tells me that I'm thinking of a HK movie and that it's not placenta she eats.

Jibe, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:29 (seventeen years ago)

What was it? Faces?

HI DERE, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

A lovely little HK movie about eating embryos to stay young.

Jibe, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

(I havent actually seen it, so dont know if it is lovely, though I doubt it)

Jibe, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

We eat eggs, we eat different kinds of animals,... So why not placenta? That said, my stomach refuses to accept it.

stevienixed, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, I feel like Tuomas. Reverts back to self:

EK!
