What First Initial Is Most Common Among Your Friends?

This came up over the weekend, as a friend of mine was trying to use her mobile. She said that she had so many friends with the initial "S" that she had to page through dozens of Sarahs and Steves to find the right number.

Now I don't have a problem with "S" - but I do have a disproportionate amount of entries under "M". (Possibly due to all the Marks, Matts, Marys, etc. that I know.)

What initial is most common in your phone? And what names are responsible?

D, cos of about 10 Daves or Davids. 30 ds in my phone altogether, from dad to domhnaill.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. I actually have 10 D's, but I only know one David. (Well enough to have a phone number at least.) However, I am troubled by Darrens. I also have 10 J's.

12 M's! But only 11 S's.

I don't know any people whose names start with I or O or Q. Or U. Or X or Y.

C and E are also popular at 8 each.

I don't have many numbers in my phone but S and C are relatively well-represented amongst my friends and family: Sarah, Simon, Steve, Sophie, Saul, Sam, Cat, Charles, Clare, Clarissa...

Loads of C's & J's!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Amber, Alice, April, Amanda, Alexandra....

Often enough, someone says "Andrew!" which isn't anybody's name, but everyone looks round.

Well, there's a high proportion of Margarets in my family. Though the only one in my phone is in there as "Mum" which is an M as well.

I have a fair few M's aswell!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I just did this:
A = 6, B = 0, C = 9, D = 2, E = 2, F = 0, G = 0, H = 1, I = 1, J = O, K = 1, L = 4, M = 7, N = 3, O = 0, P = 5, Q = 0, R = 1, S = 9, T = 2, U = 0, V = 2, W = 0, X = 0, Y = 0, Z = 0.

Can this be made into a graph?

alix (alix), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, no, I had to spend most of yesterday making demographic data into graphs...

In fact, OH NO!!! demographic data is eating my brain if I've started thinking about this on any kind of deep level, the demographics of first initials, and whether or not people near the beginning of the alphabet really do better than those near the end...

(My friend reckons this is true, but then again, his surname starts with an A, so I think he's biased.)

Loads of C's & J's!

Those are good letters :)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The B's thing is always potentially embarassing. For a while I was always dating a B-named fellow and always calling him Ben or Brandon, which was never his name, but rather one of the names of my two best friends.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Amber is "Amber Amy", and Alice is "Alice Ella" too.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to go to last names on my phone because of all of the Jim's, John's, James's, Jason's, Josh's, etc.

Oh, and I've got Kevin's galore as well.

S & M - on my old phone I had 14 of each, though when I lost it I lost most of both letter. L is also popular.

I do have "Munal" under M though, which is my local and wonderful curry house.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have lots of Ms and they are literally *all* Matts or Marks I think. You're taking over the world!
