If you're into that:

Sideways star Thomas Haden Church is to play Spider-Man's arch-enemy in the next instalment of the film series, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Church, who was Oscar-nominated for his role in Alexander Payne's comedy, will co-star with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, stars of the previous two films.

Spider-Man 3 is due for release in May 2007, but its makers are keeping secret the identity of the latest villain.

...

Director Sam Raimi said that Church would be "a fantastic and challenging new nemesis" in the latest part of the Spider-Man franchise.

Be on the lookout for new supervillian WINEMAN! He hurls empty bottles with a single bound.

Mysterio? Sandman?

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Underactor and his Evil Twin Overactor!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

He's either The Vulture or Sandman with an outside chance of being Kraven the Hunter.

They should have gotten Paul Giamatti to be The Beetle.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No wait, Paul Giamatti should have been cast as The Fixer!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

rhino surely

jones (actual), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, Paul Giamatti as Blue Beetle and THC as Booster Gold!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

At least that's better than Chloe Sevigny as Black Cat/Felicia Hardy rumor I heard, that would have been icky.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Chloe Sevigny in an ACTION movie hahahahahahahaha

Venom's on the rumour mill.

BARMS, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't Tobey fight someone his own age, instead of beating up these middle-aged men all the time?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't they introduce the kid that grows up to be Venom in Spidey2?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, this is awesome because someone TOLD me who the villain is and I can't remember. A coworker has a friend who's a costume effects guy or somesuch. Actually, I think I somehow know a couple people who could know.

If Vince Vaughn doesn't cast Tobey Maguire in his Speed Racer movie I'm pretty sure a gross injustice will have occurred.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't the thread title be Spider Manticipation?

Victor Mackulous (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't do everything! Besides, Manticipation suggests other activities.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Vince Vaughn should be spiderman

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i apologise.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

theres already a Dr. Connor or whatever his name is in the movie. He's his teacher who gives him shit at the beginning of 2 and he's in part 1 as well.

OH FUCK VENOM PLEASE. THC (heh) looks more like Eddie Brock than any of the other villains mentioned on here anyway. I will only be happy if it's venom. Fuck this ancient history stuff.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait shit, I don't mean "fuck venom", I mean "OH FUCK! Venom, please!"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

They'd have to figure out a different origin story for the symbiote (Getting into secret wars is obv. not happening), but that wouldn't be too hard.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah shit, I know it's not happening, but I still think it'd be rad.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

For reals though it's going to be Mysterio and that makes me sad.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

theres already a Dr. Connor or whatever his name is in the movie. He's his teacher who gives him shit at the beginning of 2 and he's in part 1 as well.

Yeah, tell it to Billy Dee Williams.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Emo Tobey + Miss Brant would make a hot lovely couple.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

So, everyone in these movies who has actively killed someone else has died, right?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I try to imagine what might have happened had Raimi gone ahead and replaced Tobey with Jake Gyllenhaal . Would Jake have entered a leather bar as GAY PETER instead?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

well, no, considering that he'd still be playing peter parker and not alfred's fantasy gay jake. i don't think raimi would've altered the script to accomodate you, unfortunately.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

SPIDEY IS THE PEOPLE'S HERO

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

haha if venom made spidey gay that would've been a much better movie.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Can you imagine Andrew Sullivan's angry posts though? RAIMI SEZ GAYDOM SPREAD BY EVIL BLACK GOO

Did you think it was a bomb and then call the police? Or do you not live in Boston?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

No way. I immediately felt much safer actually.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

liked the bit in the french restaurant and some of the early self-centredness

the strutting down the street and showing off in MJ's bar stuff was funny but didn't feel like the same film, in a way

superheroes and superhero stories often rely on coincidence (I don't mind it) but this had a bit too much, for me

some of the jokey bits were strung out too long (the bit w/ JJJ and the girl w/ the camera) and, eventually, some of the mugging and OTT action dialogue put me off, too

I like spider-man and I like sandman (he was sympatheticky but his flashback-anguish and redemption were weak) and it was exciting and looked good, for the most part (few bits that seemed more "unreal" or were a bit too "busy")

good fun but on too long, too many baddies, few disappointing thing and snow patrol at the end

oh, and w dafoe's butler finally telling j franco that spidey was innocent! good help is hard to find

RJG, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

the butler really should've told franco that ages ago, it would've saved the guy a LOT of troubles.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was kind of like "WTF butler dude, way to wait until the last minute to be of any use! Also where were you in the previous movies?"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Franco's revenge plot was kind of a perfect storm of douchey genius though. "BOOM I FUCKED YR GIRLFRIEND, HAW HAWS!"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

franco's plan:

a) force kirsten dunst to break up with spiderman
b) tell spiderman he fucked kirsten dunst
c) make self a martini
d) wait for spiderman to appear on his balcony
e) ...get his ass kicked????

srsly willem dafoe should've popped back up in the mirror to mention, like, setting a trap for spiderman, or something?

ghost rider, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

The whole Butler thing was really bad. It just seemed so . . . lazy.

ENBB, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

i just don't think he thought any of it out beyond the "it's funny to watch peter crying on a bridge while holding flowers lol" stage.

james franco 8080

ghost rider, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

b) tell spiderman he fucked kirsten dunst

ALSO the thing about this is that didn't harry and mary jane date each other in the first movie? i mean, really, this is old news.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

wait that would've been hilarious if he was all like LOL you guys broke up over this and i was just talking about like what happened three years ago PSYYYYYYCHE

truly that would've been the best diabolical plan ever.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Re: the dancing sequence:

Did no one else notice how it kept flipping back and forth between the way Peter thought women were reacting to him (*swoon*) and the way they were REALLY reacting to him ("Who is this nerdy dancing cunt? lol")?

Yeah, I thought that was the best part of the movie.

There were people in the theatre with me who were obviously SQUIRMING at cheesy jazz PP... and I'm thinking, jesus people, he's SUPPOSED to look like a douche.

Roz, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

even a cursory reading of Foucault should have told us that

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

This has had generally bad reviews in the UK. I didn't really understand why, or at least, looking back, I can't understand why there was so much gushing over Spider-Man 2 compared with this.

Yes, it was too long, sagged in the midddle, and things like the butler revelation were lazy, but it was so likable. Maybe I've just been watching 24 too much, but to have some kind of optimistically liberal, New Testament Christian superhero morality tale was quite refreshing, even if Sandman's whole motivation was a bit all over the place.

Neither Tobey Maguire or Kirsten Dunst seem to be able to do crying very well, and the series never manages really get emotional depth out of their darker times.

i just really appreciated the fact that sam raimi decided to make the venom story just a really weird, convoluted cocaine metaphor.

After I saw it, I tentatively mentioned this to my cinemagoing companion, apologising if it was a really obvious thing that everyone had been saying, but umm.. yeah. I totally read it that way and I'd be surprised (but sort of pleased, in some kind of life having a deeper pattern behind it kind of way) if it wasn't intentional.

Did no one else notice how it kept flipping back and forth between the way Peter thought women were reacting to him (*swoon*) and the way they were REALLY reacting to him ("Who is this nerdy dancing cunt? lol")?

I certainly noticed the mixed response, but I put it down to different people having different reactions to coke-esque confidence, but yeah, you're probably right in your reading.

Alba, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it more like...the ones that were reacting badly to him were just too far away to get a whiff of his spidey pheromones!

RJG, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

An interesting take!

Alba, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

BTWFWIW, for my money Tobey + EVIL floppy hair = hotter, but then I fancy annoying coked-up girls.

latebloomer, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

heh never mind, now i see why:

"Lucas, who was behind the smash-hit Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, said he was not impressed by the new sequel, which surged ahead of the director's 2005 film Revenge of the Sith to take the record for the biggest weekend box-office record."

latebloomer, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:12 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...

I just watched this and I really liked it, but after reading this thread I can't remember why at all. Maybe it was cause I saw it right after the new Fantastic Four and it seemed so much better in comparison. Also it was great to see Toby Maguire channeling Jim Carrey. Somehow I think Karl Jung would just eat this movie up.

I had this in mind the whole time I was reading the thread too. FUCK YOU INTERNET.
