Should I forget about going to Glastonbury this year and instead put the money towards an exciting trip to New York?

I am jealous of Steve and Gareth's transatlantic adventures, and I want in too.

I'm thinking July here... but at the same time I know I'll feel insanely jealous when the Glasto2005 anticipating goes into overdrive in June. Decisions...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been to Glastonbury. I lived in New York for fifteen years.

So, my answer would probably be highly biased.

But of course I would pick the NY trip.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been to both. new york is way better.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I would too.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

funnily enough, this is pretty much what i am doing this year. i think it is a good plan.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

At Glastonbury you will have to sleep in a tent. In New York, you will not. That's the choice made right there.

As far as I'm concerned nothing is worth sleeping in a tent for (um, apart from Benicassim maybe if I have the money, er).

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

glastonbury = has razorlight and kasabian

new york = has jon williams

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

NY, no contest really.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

glastonbury has lots of old men with shotguns wandering the streets - you gotta be careful about which girls you lay yr hands on. then there's the hippies, not to mention the irish wannabe poet newscaster. last time i went there was this fire and i had to rescue some chick from a burning building. it's a little foggy, i was on a lot of drugs at the time.

make sure to send postcards if you go.

bldfcntrbry, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex - everyone I know who has ever been to Benicassim has said under no circumstances should you sleep in a tent unless you want to be slowly roasted.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're REALLY jealous of Gareth you would go to Pittsburgh or Mobile or Amarillo or something!

Great, Brave, True, Strong...adam levine (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never been to glastonbury.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

NYC: the saturday parties at PS1 will supply your crowds-outdoors fix.

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

have you been to New York? i have hazy memories but can't be sure...

it will be really hot in July right? maybe too hot? you should go in late April instead innit (except it's bound to rain 90% of the time like the last time i was there)

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

first question was for RJG, others were for Matt

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay Matt DC! Come to New York!! We have big outdoor music things too but they're in places like CENTRAL PARK.

Hey Masonic Boom I thought you PLAYED at Glastonbury, surely that counts as "going"?

It will probably be pretty hot in July.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(And Silky is right, PS1 is like a weekly Glastonbury but for clubgoers over the age of 25, and there are pools/fountains/water being constantly misted around plus hamburgers and cheap Brooklyn IPA! Oh gosh!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been to new york, on three separate occasions.

the memories!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve - much as I would love to go over in April I'll still be a matter of weeks into my new job and they are unlikely to take kindly to me taking holiday so early. One of the advantages of July is that a friend of mine will be over there along with his entire office (most of whom I have met and get on very well with), so I'll rarely be stuck for things to do socially. Not that I really expect to be anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

September is the other option...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly just as hot with less festivals/music/outdoor things to do.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

less/fewer

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

At Glastonbury you will have to sleep in a tent. In New York, you will not. That's the choice made right there.

the last time I was in New York I spent a night wandering about Queens with no home to go to wishing I had a tent.

I could have gotten myself a hotel room for the night i guess but that'd have costed $$$$. it is probably also possible to book taxis in and out of glastonbury each morning/night, and to a B&B (this is a very hopeful theory).

why not just go to both? glasto only costs £100 or something if you abstain from spending stupid money buying stuff on-site and bring your own stuff.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

*PLAYED* at Glasto? In my fan fiction only, alas!

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Matt -- try the NYC trip but don't leave until after I've visited in the early part of the month or something! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the bathroom situation at ps1 is so not awesome, comparable in fact to glastonbury in terms of pain-in-the-arseness.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to live across the road from PS1. In fact, my former housemate still does. Go and knock on her door and say "Hi, can I use your loo?" and I'm sure she'll let you. ;-)

(Just kidding, Kali, if you're reading this.)

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

New York has excellent toilet facilities I must say

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i used the toilet at the basement of the empire state building once, that was very satisfying.

even though that washroom smelled a lot actually.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but have you used the loo on *top* of the Chrysler Building?

I have! I pissed on NYC! From a great height!

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

there was a toilet riot the last time i was at ps1. i'd been waiting in a long line for about 25 minutes, and by the time my friend and i got into the ladies room we were at the hopping-from-foot-to-foot-oh-no stage. others were similarly distressed. just as i was about to enter the stall, one of the security guards barged in and said, "there's a clogged toilet somewhere else in the building. we're closing all of the toilets. clear the restroom."

basically, pandemonium broke out. with my friend ruth as the ringleader, the remaining people in line stormed the stalls. she yelled something like, "what are you going to do about it? we've been waiting for half an hour and we're using the bathroom!" and the guard called for backup on his walkie talkie.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i wasn't pissing, kate.. i was... laying.. the ... .foundation. i guess.. in a way.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Glastonbury last year was a big fat disappointment full of wankerish Oasis and Paul McCartney fans, attempting to get down with some manufactured sense of spirituality, that everyone seems to think gives it a mystical edge over the other UK ones. It's all bullshit.

Having said that, I am gonna go.

New York's not all that it's cracked up to be but if you have to choose I'd go with that.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the way I see it Matt, whatever else you do you'll think "I wish I was at Glastonbury" on Glastonbury weekend, the pull of the familiar is very strong. I almost feel I'll go to Glastonbury cos I have done for 3 years now and it seems the normal thing to do.

Glastonbury last year was a big fat disappointment full of wankerish Oasis and Paul McCartney fans, attempting to get down with some manufactured sense of spirituality, that everyone seems to think gives it a mystical edge over the other UK ones. It's all bullshit.

yeah I mean don't go to Glastonbury, cos if there are people who like Oasis there you DEFINITELY won't be able to have a good time, that's definitely the kind of thing that would ruin something I spent 400 euro on for me anyway, yeah, I find it hard to have fun just imaginining those wankers and their manufactured sense of spirituality. hmmmmmmm

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever else you do you'll think "I wish I was at Glastonbury" on Glastonbury weekend

Nah, you'll be having much more fun in a much better, more comfortable place, not surrounded by hippies and wankers (NB not you, Ronan). It's a no-brainer, Matt.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 24 March 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's it Ronan. It'll be Glasto #7 for me and I had planned on going every year until I die* so I'll feel like I'm missing out. On the other hand I'm not exactly loaded right now and the last thing I want to do is drift through the year just doing what I always do. And I've meant to go to NYC for like two years now.

*Looking on the bright side, I might die before the end of June, I suppose.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 March 2005 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide for the life of me this year. Friends are talking about Sonar but I'm not really feeling that as an idea, I love dance music but it just doesn't appeal to me at all, for whatever reason, I can see all the DJs from it eventually elsewhere. Also while I liked Barcelona I'm not keen to go back so soon.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised you're still into Glasto so much Ro - i'll probably get the 'wish i was there' feeling at least once over that weekend tho, unless i do go and see New Order and/or Jaxx in Hyde Park perhaps...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 24 March 2005 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I think it is the "atmosphere" for me, last year I only saw 3 or 4 things but it's just the best place in the world to be a bit messy, and by that I mean anything from the whole all night weirdness to just sitting around in the day with a spliff or whatever.

It's a really really good holiday, total catharsis, every time.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

O to the T and the M. Damn, you've made me want to go again...

My concern is that last year was the best Glasto I've had by far, mostly due to the massive camp of us altogether and the huge feeling of camaraderie there was throughout everything. I'm a little worried about 2005 being a bit rub by comparison.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you've both been dissing New York for long enough - get over there already

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's it Ronan. It'll be Glasto #7 for me and I had planned on going every year until I die*

*Looking on the bright side, I might die before the end of June, I suppose.

well either the end of June, or before the end of next June since there won't be one next year at all anyways!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't he say there was going to be no glastonbury in 2006? so if you don't go this year the next one will be 2007...

(that said, i'd vote for NYC because they have running water and electricity there)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Sven's got it. Say it early enough and we can round up tickets to some ridiculous event on Randall's Island.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

But everything (almost) in NYC does cost $$$$. Be prepared to spend a lot for a hotel room in the city. You could stay someplace away from the city and take the train in....

pepektheassassin (pepektheassassin), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but the exchange rates make a stay in a NYC hotel seem like almost FREE compared to London hotels!

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be at glastonbury this year Matt. So it'll be X% less fun. Go to new york.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

this but substitute Vancouver for New York

more private than a bar stool (Upt0eleven), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

New York 07 - very good fun indeed
Glastonbury 04 - the best fun of my life

Glastonbury 04 wins, I made the right decision.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

surely you had more fun at a sunnier Glastonbury

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

vancouver is great. though personally i can't imagine anything which wouldn't beat glastonbury.

lex pretend, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

Oh hang on, I started this in 2005. Glasto 05 was grim, New York wins. Wrong decision.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

up: Vanc is lovely, but then I'm getting (heart)sick of NY after watching it become exponentially less interesting in the 17 years I've lived here. Been here much?

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

surely you had more fun at a sunnier Glastonbury

It was sunny for about half the festival IIRC. Anyway, 2004 wins out over all sunny years for the 20-strong campsite and the sense of camaraderie.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

I've been to NY on three occasion but I've never really "got" it. I think that's mainly due to having only experienced it as a tourist and never with someone who lives there, and that given the chance I could like it a lot more.

Vancouver is this summer's holiday option cuz a friend's moving there. Tbh, I might be able to stretch to both of these options if i don't eat for the next three months/quite drinking for a fortnight.

more private than a bar stool (Upt0eleven), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

would fucking love to travel from NYC to Vancouver by road and/or rail

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'd imagine most modern North American cities are pretty dull if all you do is look around without actually hanging out with people who know the place.

I dunno, modern cities are social and economic places first and foremost - if you're going away on your own why not go somewhere completely different, or of amazing natural beauty or something?

Matt DC, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Vancouver covers both bases, is the impression i get

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

flickr search brings this up:
http://l.yimg.com/g/images/spaceball.gif

Still, should broaden my horizons a bit and venture beyond NA for once. Especially since I'm probably not going to be able to afford to do so for some time after this summer.
