WTF?
Doesn't Ving Rhames have better things to do?

Huk-L, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

tenafly?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They have him sucking that damn lollipop in every promo photograph, too. It just makes me think of the ball-gag in Pulp Fiction, and I really don't think that's an association the producers want to establish.

sugarpants: the luscious ingenue (sugarpants), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I just noticed that ad yesterday and was befuddled.

"Who gets medieval on your ass, baby?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is wrong with Ving Rhames as Kojak?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What OS said! Would you rather have Joe Isuzu shave his head & suck on the lollipop? Also, WTF IS Ving Rhames doing that he can't be Kojak? Making time w/ Mrs. Rick Fox?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Kojak was conceived as a Greek-American character and it's kind of bizarre to see him played by a black man, much like it would be kind of bizarre to see an Asian Porgy or a white Othello. Also (and more importantly), the promos appear to be hell-bent on making the show seem like all shades of unwashed ass.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

a white Othello

It's been done, though -- Patrick Stewart played him on-stage with an otherwise all-black cast in Washington DC, I seem to recall. Context is all!

Please let be noted I have zilch problem with Rhames as an actor, so the surprise was less that as it was the fact a remade series was existing in the first place -- and that they didn't try to make a movie out of it first (then again they probably saw how well Starsky and Hutch did).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's producing this thing? The makers of Spring Break Shark Attack?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(then again they probably saw how well Starsky and Hutch did)

$110 million profit seems pretty decent to me.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"do it"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just pissed off because I don't get the USA Network.
I like Ving Rhames a lot, he's got that kind of great presence where he's usually enjoyable even in shitty movies.

Huk-L, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

But whither the CRITICAL ACCLAIM, Dan!?!

(Tracer wins, as usual.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the tag-line of: "When you go bald, you never go back". is weird in more ways than one. first of all, it doesn't rhyme anymore. second of all, it make me think, when i read it, that when *I* go bald I will never go back. Which makes me wonder: back from where?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

AKA "The Mission: Impossible Effect"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, I think Kojak's Greek-osity is about the fifth thing people think of when they think about the original show.

4. Telly Savalas was a strange- (maybe sexy, maybe creepy) looking fellow.
3. "Who loves ya, baby?"
2. The lollipop.
1. He ALWAYS got a parking spot right in front of the appropriate building. My brothers and I call it "pulling a Kojak." No circling or ramps for that righteous seeker of justice.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and the theme song is "When I Need a Man" by Tweet!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, but that doesn't really address the heart of my post, namely the promos appear to be hell-bent on making the show seem like all shades of unwashed ass.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it's gonna have to be pretty good to beat that baldy on the shield. that's a tough show.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, I haven't seen any promos, so I guess I'm not qualified to pre-judge the show on the basis of them. Hence, the non-addressing of the heart of your post.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Heart Of Your Post. Didn't Celine sing that?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

$110 million profit seems pretty decent to me.

Wow, crazy! I completely thought it had stalled or something, so my goof there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, the true scenario here is 'Dan Perry as Kojak,' being the bald sex god he is. He solves crimes while licking lollipops in church choirs. Uh, yeah. *flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd move to America just so I could get the USA Network to see that.

Huk-L, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Let the record show that I can totally play Greek-American better than Ving Rhames.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

See?

The Ghost of Stelios Xifaras (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

play Greek-American

ahem.

Huk-L, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Pope Dan in Toast and Jam, a Stephen J. Cannell production.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Christ.

The Ghost of Furious Backpedalling (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

DO NOT DENY YOUR MISSION FROM GOD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the casting makes perfect sense. Ving Rhames is the black Savalas. I suspect AdamL will like this show!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have cast RuPaul

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i would have cast Bob Dylan

Ving Rhames steps into Telly Savalas’ shoes for new version of Kojak
BOSTON (AP) — Ving Rhames may have picked up a lollipop and stepped into Telly Savalas’ shoes for a new version of Kojak, but he wasn’t a fan of the TV show as a child.
“Kojak wasn’t on in my house. I grew up in Harlem one block away from the Apollo Theater, where a version of Kojak’s show was happening every day in the neighbourhood. There were thugs and criminals and detectives running around. Why would I want to watch a show about that?” he told the Boston Sunday Globe. “I think I’ve seen one rerun.”
Rhames, who is best known for his roles in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction and the Mission: Impossible franchise, said his Theo Kojak will be different.
“You’ll see my Kojak being very human. He interprets the law of the streets differently than what’s on the written page. It’s not the law to beat up someone who molests a child. It’s not the law to castrate someone who rapes a child,” the 43-year-old actor said.
“But if someone does that to your child, could you understand that kind of punishment? I’m not saying you like it, but can you understand it? I guess that sums up Kojak. He’s a man who happens to be a detective. He finds his own way to deal with problems.”
Kojak premiered on the USA Network last week as a two-hour movie. The crime drama will begin its regular weekly rotation Sunday.

his excuse for not watching kojak is pretty lame

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
I'm just watching what I take to be the pilot here, being shown on a movie channel with no mention of a series. Did it happen in the US? Does anyone know if it is to be shown here? Is it any good?

I don't really get their claiming it's a revival of Kojak. I mean, if I make a series with Samuel Jackson as a kick-ass cop, then put him in a tatty raincoat and call him Columbo, that doesn't amount to reviving that series.

officers took four dogs into custody

LOLZ

Anyway, sad story. I wonder why the dogs snapped all of a sudden, obviously the person had contact with them before since he'd been working for Rhames for 2+ years...
