the one advantage to living in a city with close to nil public transport.

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

While I was waiting on the platform - he just came up grabbed my by the collar and started screaming obscenities and threats in my face as the subway was pulling in. So I guess he got bored of that after 30 or so seconds; he hopped on the car, I got on the car behind him and asked the conductor to call security which he proceeds to do. Dude gets off at the next stop but not after going after someone else on that car. The conductor tells me to file a complaint at the station I was headed to.

When security (finally) shows up they tell me i should have hit the yellow-strip thingy on the train and that we should have waited at the station. I'm not sure about that. Hold everyone up and trap myself in a station with a complete psychopath while I wait up to 15 minutes for security or the cops to show?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No freakin' way, dude. You did the right thing.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Which station? Security seems to come really damm quickly to Spadina and St George the few times I've seen someone fly off the handle.

At the Y-U-S line of Spadina some highschool kids decided to play chicken with subway driver by jumping off the platform, standing there and jumping to the little island inbetween the tracks at the last second. And with the way the tunnel curves there it's not like the operator had a chance of stopping.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend (female) got touched up pretty nastily on the tube once, she pulled the emergency cord, and when they got to the station staff came along. not one person was willing to back her up. They didn't pull the person off the tube, instead they pulled her off, got the british transport police in, interrogated her keeping her for over an hour, and then told her they might press charges for her pulling the cord!

She got herself some legal advice and asked for the cctv tape from the carriage, but by the time they got round to replying it had 'regrettably vanished'

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This happened to me once. About three guys! One of them said he liked my watch and then he said "how do you take it off?" and I looked at him and said "you don't". Then he kind of headbutted me and punched me in the stomach and his friends came and joined in (while their girlfriends watched!). I just got off at the next stop and they wouldn't come off the train because it was the last one. Luckily I was too drunk (and on other things) to feel much of anything!

xp-VIcky, that's dodgy

Great, Brave, True, Strong, Great, Real, Wise, Great...adam levine (nordicskilla, Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

when ARE you supposed to pull the emergency cord? the new york subways have signs up listing all the difft circumstances in which you had BETTER NOT pull that cord.. three inches from the SHINY DANGLY WOODEN HANDLE

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck trusting a cop, I carry my own guns!

Oh yeah!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Which station?
The incident happened at St.Clair West & I was stuck waiting for security at Osgood station for 15 or 20 minutes. There really aren't nearly enough of these guys.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

tom "bernie goetz" millar!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer, I have always wondered that exact thing. FWIW, I can't think of a single situation where you'd WANT to get stuck between stops. Wouldn't you want to get to the next stop as quickly as possible if there were an emergency??

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that's nasty adam. a similar thing happened to me and my friend on the bendy bus last week. they asked me what kind of phone i had and i said a shit one, you don't want it mate. one of them grabbed my friend and we tried to run down the end of the bus but no one would move! then when the driver stopped he wouldn't open the front doors for us!!!

scg, Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post not sure if it's the same as the london underground, but here if you pull the emergency cord the train carries into the next station as usual, but then the emergency is 'investigated. Actually, as soon as the cord goes the driver comes onto the intercom next to where it's pulled, to find out what the problem is, so if they need first aiders or whatever, they've got a headstart.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

another friend of mine was getting off the bendy bus in peckham once, and some guy just punched him in face and then got on the bus! for no reason.

scg, Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Crazy. That happened to a friend of mine at an Oasis show once! Just a random punch in the face!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I told you people, NEVER get too close to Liam!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, St Clair is a wierd mix of people sometime. I hate catching the streetcar there as people get so pushy.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The timing couldn't have been worse either, as I've just gotten rid of the car and have done nothing but rant about the superiority of pulbic transit for the last month.

This guy did seem very disturbed and it wasn't until my discussion with the transit cops that I realized he could easily resurface someday on the news having shoved someone in front of a train.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nevermind the transit strike at the end of the month.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 24 March 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i have an extremely low tolerance for nutty people on the train. i actually think this is a flaw on my part; i need to have more understanding of the mentally ill in general. but when i'm on the train and somebody is mumbling to themselves or sort of talking/not talking at various people, or screaming, or singing loudly, or what have you, i just get really anxious and annoyed.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i also stand about six feet back from the edge of the platform always...so no one can sneak up and push me onto the rails. ever since i read about that guy in new york...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I do that too.

Sorry, Thermo. I assume they arrested the psycho dude?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the one advantage to living in a city with close to nil public transport.

it's advantageous to have a heightened amount of car theft and car-jacking? (then again, if you're living in a very small town, etc.)

No. He just skipped off at the next stop (Dupont).
As if the TTC has the resources to stop him on his way out.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i have an extremely low tolerance for nutty people on the train. i actually think this is a flaw on my part; i need to have more understanding of the mentally ill in general.

I used to feel this way, but then one of these 'nuts' went out of his way to kick me in the shin. Another one was looking over my shoulder, reading everything I was reading. Then there was the frotter, and another homeless guy who grabbed my boob. So forget it.

Not every 'psychologically disturbed' person assaults people or invades their personal spaces, so you shouldn't feel bad about getting annoyed at the ones who do.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

well, the problem is that i react to those 'disturbed' people who are ranting or mumbling to themselves, as though they were invading my personal space. i mean, not that i tell them to back off or anything, just...i have that same feeling of creeping anxiety and annoyance.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

don't you have that always? isn't that "your thing"?

you make me feel like a tyrannosaurus rex (deangulberry), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

why are you being an ass? is that your 'thing'?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Like I said, I don't blame you though, because I've had too many experiences with people who do that, but who will then suddenly scream in your face or something. It's not unnatural to feel uncomfortable around 'mumblers'. It's not as if you can solve all of their problems by feeling more compassionate, and they probably don't give two shits whether you're annoyed or not.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, some people are just such shitheads (refering to violent people, gropers etc on public transport) Usually our metro trains are 2 seperate carriages, and if there are shitheads on one of them - headcases, drinkers etc, I'll usually change carriage at the next stop. Who need the fucking grief. If I see cops on the metro, I'll usually sit next to them. I've really had my fill of the metro recently, by the time I get on it in the evening, it's all fucking aggressive drinkers and charvers. I want the cops to come on and beat them in the kidneys with their nightsticks till they piss blood. The bus is usually better, though, heh. Nevertheless, I'm finding it all more stressful these days than driving & sitting in traffic jams used to be, believe it or not. I never thought I'd think that, never.

For a city of 4 million daily riders, I'm surprised there aren't more incidents in the New York subway system. I've been riding since I was a kid. The worst thing that ever happened to me was being told to hand over my wallet or the perp would "cut my heart out with a knife." Nice stuff.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you were talking about the sandwich place.

Bob Kikski, Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Times like his I really really love my 46-thousand dollar SUV packed with girls in the spring sun, knowing that it's a Toyota that gets great emissions so STFU. Thermo is a great canadian cat, though, so my comforts to him. If he comes to Vancouver, he can ride with me, safely.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a greater general tolerance for nutcases, too. till i started working in NYC.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the story about the jacuzzi truck again?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha. That's quite the story to go into right now. But I see your point - not all crazy people are bad.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And I've been out Vancouver way as recently as 2 springs ago. The worst crazy person experience i had out there was a guy that i gave 35 cents for the skytrain insisting I take some of his homemade mdma in return!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, my bad!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)
