I'd wait about six months on the PSP until they work out whatever the major problem is (weak battery, lousy wire connection, easily-scratched screen) and fix it for the market. In the meantime, satiate self with whatever new toys you already have.

I've made a resolution to sit out this generation unless I see some serious killer apps.

I got one after figuring out that not only does Target have them in stock, they give you 10% all purchases the day you apply for/get a Target Visa card. I decided this was a "deal" so I walked out with a PSP and two games.
Game one: Lumines. This is one of the cooler puzzle games I've played in a while. It involves making squares out of at least four squares. Squares fall from the top, tetris-style. The kicker is that the music is linked to the gameplay, meaning it'll occasionally sit in a loop until you get another combo. It also shifts between music and backgrounds. Completely addictive.
Game two: Wipeout Pure. If you've ever played Wipeout, you know what's going on here. Futuristic race craft, weapons, Designers Republic-style menus, and some music from Paul Hartnoll and a handful of licensed tracks.
The system also comes with Spider-Man 2 (the full movie) on Sony's new "Universal Media Disc" format and a sampler disc. Sample disc has promos for a bunch of movies, music, and games from Sony.
I am looking for the 1GB memory stick for this thing so I can stick videos on it. Some people have made apps to encode video for the sucker, and it can also play mp3s (Sony finally came around on the whole mp3 thing!) and display pictures from digital cameras. You can connect it to a computer via USB cable and it'll act like a removeable drive. It also has 802.11 wireless and automatically detected my home network! The rumor is that they're going to release a web browser for it.
Unless the battery starts dying after a ridiculously low time, this is an amazing toy.

And, reason number one I think this'll catch on: the screen is not fucking tiny! I am able to stare at this thing without squinting! When I ate dinner with my parents and mentioned there's a Tetris-style puzzle game and showed them the thing, THEY showed interest.
I've had a lot a weird conversations lately about "gamers" but I think when it comes down to it, we have a very large percentage of the population who have at one time had an active interest in video games, even if it was just to play RC Pro Am against their cousin when they were 8 years old. Casually playing Tetris or the odd Mario-style game doesn't make you a "gamer."
BTW, the average age of a Gameboy Advance buyer around six months after they came out was 17 or 18 years old. Just sayin'.
