is katamari damacy the new super mario brothers?

Teeny thinks it's a good question, and so do I. Think of it... ingeniously stupid plot. Ingeniously simple game play. An almost total lack of strategy. A ridiculously catchy theme. And most of all, there's that one-two punch of it being kinda easy and imminently replayable. You can win it, and you can win it over and over and over. And then, after playing it for 10 hours straight, you have dreams about it. What else but Super Mario Brothers is like that?

until the cartoon, the live action series, the movie, and the CEREAL come out, few things can match SMB

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 26 March 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't played it, but I've theorised it. I've also been looking in my blog into whackier PS games in a similar vein, like the wonderful Mojib Ribon.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 March 2005 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the music on mojib ribbon is the best music ever.

The momus essay is kinda not bad! Although I think the self-conscious 2D thing has more to do with the backlash from/ reconsideration of the Virtual Reality movement, 94/95ish, than nostalgia for paper? The timing fits nicely.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 26 March 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Momus is cool with me dude. I'm clownin'.

otm.

sometimes I love old video games, how simple they are, and until katamari damacy I was afraid that we'd gotten a lot of technical advances but no new & wonderful ideas. The technical advances weren't even making the old ideas much better. nb I only just got a playstation 2 for christmas so I'm not the best person to be evaluating games. Anyway it seems like all the advances are coming in the FPS games, maybe the sports games too, but those interest me less than FPS.

Oh but also anyway a lot of the old video games were such shit, I just got one of those playstation 2 'arcade classics' things because I thought Defender! Gauntlet! and it also had a lot of incredibly shitty games like 'Bubbles' (not Bubble Bobble to my utter and complete disappointment) and 'Root Beer Tapper.' Root beer tapper, whf?

Hey Cozen and any other UK computer game dudes, has there been a pal port of Katamari Damarcy yet? I know hardcore PS2 heads are like the most boring trad anti-Nintencute dudes ever, but it's about time someone wrote up a petition vis NOM's Animal Crossing one. I need to play this game!

rio natsume, Friday, 2 September 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I went to Gamestop last month and asked when the Katamari Damacy sequel was coming out, and the guy behind the counter said he had no idea what I was talking about and made me spell "Katamari."

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

not yet rio : /

For the Europeans & Britishers: "EA will bring We Love Katamari to Europe and other PAL regions in early 2006"

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 2 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Did the first KD come out on PAL?

Gamestop employees are required to only acknowledge the existence of games from Electronic Arts and Vivendi Universal.

Electronics Boutique, IME, has the more geeky staff.

Of course, when I want to know about video games, I talk to you people, or just go to the news on 1up/Gamespot.

Escapist magazine, by the way, is great.

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 September 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

EA?!?!?!

rio natsume, Friday, 2 September 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I had a look around the escapist but I was too dumb to figure it out : /

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

maybe, but around here they all pimp the Xbox so hard it just surgically removes the desire to buy anything from 'em. Me, to self: shut up gamer dude, I didn't ask for your opinion of my system's strengths and weaknesses, I asked where the fucking Manhunt game be at

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 2 September 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)
