8.2 earthquake registered off Sumatra
Magnitude is nearly as large as tsunami quake
BREAKING NEWS
MSNBC staff and news service reports
Updated: 11:55 a.m. ET March 28, 2005

A large earthquake was registered Monday off Indonesia's Sumatra Island, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, describing it as a "great earthquake" with a magnitude of 8.2 on the Richter scale.

No reports had been received from the region. The Dec. 26 quake that launched the massive tsunami was a 9.0, the USGS said.

Monday's quake epicenter was reported 150 miles southwest of Medan in northern Sumatra, and located at 18.6 miles underground. It occured at around 11 p.m. local time.

Just a quick reminder that the Richter scale is logarithmic. The difference between 8.2 and 9.0 is quite substantial.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Still, this has hit in shallow water which will makes it potentially very dangerous.

Webb Friendly (Webb Friendly), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Which will? Eurgh

Webb Friendly (Webb Friendly), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

No reports of any injuries so far, but hoo boy this is worrying.

C J (C J), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This is scary. I remember reading that geologists expected there was an increased risk of further earthquakes due to the shifts in the tectonic plates caused by the earlier quake. I would like to think that the tsunami warning system has been improved, but I doubt much has been done in so short a time.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No - there's nothing in the area where it has occured. If there is going to be a tsunami it'll happen in about an hour and a half.

Webb Friendly (Webb Friendly), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake could cause a "widely destructive tsunami" in the area around its epicentre.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

But, didn't the USGS originally report that the Dec. 26 quake was 8.0 or so???

peepee (peepee), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It was 9.5, and remember its a logarythmic scale.

Webb Friendly (Webb Friendly), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone varify what USGS ORIGINALLY reported that Dec. 26 quake to be? Other sites suggest it was originally listed at 8.0 or 8.1.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

A new report suggests that this one was 8.5:

Webb Friendly (Webb Friendly), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah they scaled up the rating of the earthquake later on, it was reported lower initially.

The richter scale isn't used anymore by seismologists use moment magnitude.

UPDATE 1-8.0 magnitude quake generates tsunami off Samoa islands

We had a tsunami watch here in Hawaii, but it was canceled an hour ago.

They're saying 19 dead in Samoa?

I read it was in the twenties.

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/the-others-were-shouting-tsunami-but-we-thought-its-a-joke-20090930-gbou.html

Locals in Samoa have been told more than 100, and possibly "hundreds", may have been killed in the tsunami that hit the island this morning.

The confirmed death toll from the South Pacific earthquake and tsunami is at 28, with a minimum of 14 reported dead in both Samoa and American Samoa, according to the Red Cross and media reports.

But media in Samoa says the tsunami had devastated villages on the south of the island, and the number of people feared dead was far higher.

wilter, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

I knew this Singaporean guy who was in the army and helped clean up after the Indonesian tsunami, I think it permanently fucked him up

wilter, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 02:40 (sixteen years ago)

jesus christ. was certain i heard on news radio before i got in the shower that various tsunami alerts around the various islands had been downgraded?? maybe they were referring just to NZ like charlie says.

surge gainsbourg protector (haitch), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 02:45 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah no-one's reporting much on Samoa yet, at least here in the US. I had to go to ABC and The age websites to get the full picture.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 02:51 (sixteen years ago)

wait. cnn finally reporting 17 in Samoa. Took them all day.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 02:51 (sixteen years ago)

significantly more confirmed now, 77?
awful.

i still find it insane that the '04 tsunami killed as many people as it did, it's almost unimaginable.

8.7 magnitude earthquake in Aceh, Indonesia, tsunami alert issued

Roz, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, following this as i just yesterday saw 4 friends off to phuket/phi phi. seems so far like there's nothing too much to panic about. i guess the fact that the movement is more horizontal than the 2004 quake means less water displaced. here's hoping.

not as bad as the krakatoa eruptions. it still looks pretty scary. i believe there has been no contact with anyone from tonga for hours now?

This doesn't appear to be quite on the scale of the Krakatoa eruptions in 1883, however, its size and scale may impact our global weather patterns and temperatures significantly. 2022. I cannot. https://t.co/vPdk4jZ51n

very low casualty reports still (2 or 3 fatalities) but communication remains terrible-to-non-existent with some of the many islands and communities

according to this the wave itself was only three feet high (damage will be from ash and aftermath):

mark s, Tuesday, 18 January 2022 20:26 (four years ago)

ppl currently seizing on a scientific model that's saying "waves up to 15m high" on the westernmost spur: 15m = c.50 feet high which is obviously high! tho "up to" is a little weasely and it was apparently (per map of model) a lot less than that in most places

With a first unofficial report at hand (link below), I revisited my first tsunami simulation & compared it.
Inundation for Hihifo seems close to observation.
Inundation in Nuku'alofa probably overestimated. Some areas still with question marks.#Tonga #Tsunami #Nukualofa pic.twitter.com/2qLGe7NwcX
