what's the deal with this new ilx code stuff? (aka where's my handy ILE link?)

eh? (i'll bet this is number 3 in a series of just about 7 identical threads being started right now)

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh please bring that direct ILM/ILE right hand link back ASAP

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes!!! I've already logged out twice when my reflex to switch boards kicked in. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Jordan OTM.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ah wait 'bookmark board'!!

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Just click on "bookmark board" and you won't ever need one again!

I like it.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this new setup is WAY BETTER. It will encourage the use of other boards, especially I Love Film!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't want to use the other boards!!

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, this awesome! I Love Books will get more attention too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, you don't have to bookmark them!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

this is great but I keep accidentally logging myself out by habit of going to the right side. can we, uh, swap them?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And the placement is actually better. It'll take a couple hours getting used to, but then it will be natural.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that is pretty cool. I've got my four boards bookmarked.

Haha how come the one for ILC says "Comix" instead of ILC? It's probably because of that dastardly cooking board, am I right?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe we should have worked on making "sticky" board-wide threads to announce this sort of stuff first?

:-(

Praise, criticisms, suggestions: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/newanswers.php?board=55

I hope most ppl don't find this rejig too traumatic.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU MUST LEARN NEW WAYS

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

thread title should've read "where's my handy ILM link", pedant fans.

does this go some way to answering the age old question dilemma of ILE on the left, ILM on the right ?

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You can change the bookmark text in your settings - these are just the defaults when you first bookmark boards.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish there was a way to turn on images for a single thread only.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, human computer interaction

who is the interaction design whizz?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

um how do you unbookmark when you bookmarked ile twice?

sorry alan, i seem to be yr micro-nemesis today

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

if i delete m'cookies, will i have to rebookmark the boards i like?

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe "show all details" should override your images setting??

edit bookmarks in your user settings - you can rename, delete and you like

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ANY you like

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sorted!!

this is exciting!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the bookmarks! Good job, Alan.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i like!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be interested to see if this brings on a new proliferation of miniboards.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it will definitely make me pay attention to ILBooks and ILFilm more

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love to know how you managed to bookmark it twice, mark!

mini-boards would be great. obv the "make new board" function is not available as it once was, but lobbying for new boards i think would not be out of place on the ModReq board. It will be just like USENET

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Will it ever be possible to start up a new board again? Hmm? Hmmmmm?

Remy (Ulysses Q. Fitzgerald) (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, x-post!

Remy (Ulysses Q. Fitzgerald) (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

One suggestion is that the active bookmark be bolded. It would make it easier to tell which board you're currently on.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea "create new board" had vanished actually!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, doesn't the fact that it doesn't have a purple link clue you in to that, though?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay this is great! A vast improvement.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

SPENCER IS QUITE CORRECT THO - I totally meant to add that before I committed. lazy me. will do next time there is a big change. It should be just like the line below that says which bit of the board you are in

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It will be just like USENET
OMG YES!!!!! Can we make people who want new boards fill out a charter and have ILX-wide votes for approval?

The Ghost of The Definition Of User Unfriendly (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: I really loved the functionality of the old, red "23 unread messages" option. On the settings page it's still selectable, but it doesn't seem to make any difference...?

Remy (Ulysses Q. Fitzgerald) (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, doesn't the fact that it doesn't have a purple link clue you in to that, though?

Yes, but it should be more positively indicated. As it stands the boards you're not on stand out more because of the underlining.

Alan, this is really great. Thank You and anyone else who worked on this.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yes, i think after i bookmarked ile" i clicked BACK to the earlier version of the same page for no sensible reason (ie instead of going via "now return to the page you came from") and so it looked like it hadn't registered so i reclicked it

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"i'd love to know how you managed to bookmark it twice, mark!"

I did the same thing. I just clicked back instead of clicking the thing to go back to the page.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I FEAR CHANGE!

yeah, (later) seems to work now--AWESOME--but the numbers don't appear in the New Answers?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

now move blog view up to the top of the page in new answers!!

(plz)

(haha yes i know there is "history" connected to this) (so you don't have to)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, this is very good. Thankyou Alan/Andrew/Noodles. It was very annoying having to keep going back to the Ilxor home page.

(I was looking forward to throwing a faux-strop when 'All Noise Dude Summertime Fun Board and Pickle Bar' took up an entire line's worth of bookmarks but you appear ahead of the game on that one)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, I'm with the "this is bullshit!" contingent.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

red numbers is proving too thorny, but you should be taken to the "Unread messages" rule, which does most of the work.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Just because you don't want an easy link to the baseball board, Matos, doesn't mean those who do should have to suffer!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

. . . except I'm not anymore, I now see the error of my ways re: bookmkarking. nice work. carry on. (haha almost typed "carry one," yes carry 1 on.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the 'lies' on the newspaper box cuz it inevitably becomes 'flies' within the week. sometimes you get someone esp. handy with a spraycan 'propaganda' becomes 'props2gandalf'.

There's a tagger with a spelling problem that apparently has lived in the 5-square-mile-radius for close to 10 years now, everything in this neighborhood has "Christanty" written on it...I figure, it's either a retarded named Christian or a Xtian fundamentalist proving a point for all of us.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

or like, look at some nice pieces.

()ops (()()ps), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

though tagging != grafitti

()ops (()()ps), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i just cleaned out all the Noise bookmarks. add it back if you want it. i won't do that again, but there were so many dupes - and in ppl who hadn't been vocally complaining - that I figured it was easier for the noise ppl to add it back, than for all them ppl to remove the many dupes.

i hope i won't have to do that again - the URL trick shouldn't work any more.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, if anyone thinks graffiti can't be art, read one Sasha Frere-Jones blog, thx.

Very true, but I would say that technically the art there is the photography.

Are you making sure the http request "accept" header would match "image/*"?

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

why in 1982 oops?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't that around when the "serious" art world started to view grafitti as art?

()ops (()()ps), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

tagging isn't art, tagging is tagging, or indeed vandalism. ALTERNATIVELY, i am breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide. it is art. possibly even good art. me breathing is arguably more 'valuable' 'art' than tagging, though others may of course disagree. of course referring to my own process of existence as an artform is, i think, utterly impractical if not completely useless in critical discourse. ditto frivalous pursuits such as tagging or banging a saucepan loudly with a wooden spoon. or being John Cage (ha ha)...

of course, if you invited a bunch of kids into a room, gave them pens and invited them to scrawl all over the walls, then invited other people inside to have a look, that would be art.

i prefer to think of this as a perception or suggestion, rather than an opinion.

Sven Hongroe (blueski), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

bullshit

Sven Basted (blueski), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto frivalous pursuits such as tagging or banging a saucepan loudly with a wooden spoon. or being John Cage (ha ha)...

What about the frivolous pursuit of splattering a bunch of paint on a canvas? Or recording yourself singing and monkeying around with some instruments?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, i can see a clear difference - probably more to do with the motivation (do taggers think of themselves as artists creating art? is that the best indication of what constitutes art? if not, why not? is it actually that unreasonable?)

though i continue to be fascinated and frustrated by the "this is art" = art' thing, especially considering the idea that location can be as crucial to the context as motivation. if someone says it's art and someone else says it's not then neither is right or wrong, hence 'fun' frustration.

Momus Hongroe (blueski), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

()ops (()()ps), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not hearing the aesthetic debate above me.

I am enjoying the new phenomenon of people popping up and the "other boards" they previously never went to, as if they can now travel at warp speed through the bookmark wormhole, as opposed to the former slow boat to Omicron Ceti III on impulse drive.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i never understand why ppl have such a hard time w.the idea of "bad art"

of course tagging is art (even the eleventy-twillionth time): what the hell else is it?

it's depressing/oppressive when it's bad art (eg the bus shelter - despite being even more mass-produced - was better art when untagged)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

nah

Sven Basted (blueski), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

or maybe yes, it would be funny if taggers were reprimanded and prosecuted not for vandalising but for doing it so unimaginatively. Bad artists would become criminals and I would probably be in a lot of trouble (unless I become wholesale judge, in which case everyone else would be in trouble).

Sven Basted (blueski), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

()ops (()()ps), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

graffiti has had about as much to do with hip-hop in the last 15 years as sneakers, caps, action figures, branded soft drinks, womens bottoms etc.

Sven Basted (blueski), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i.e. a fair amount but not enough to retain '4 pillars' validity re definition of hip-hop today. what this has to do with the art argument i'm not sure.
