[i]LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell was hospitalized with breathing difficulties Tuesday and listed in critical condition, Lynchburg General Hospital said in a statement.

Doctors said Falwell was on a ventilator and his condition had stabilized. He was back in the hospital a month after battling pneumonia.

Falwell, 71, is the founder of the Moral Majority and chancellor of Liberty University, which he also founded.

He was treated for pneumonia for 13 days in late February and early March. For a time, he was on a ventilator.

Falwell was in the pulpit Easter Sunday at Thomas Road Baptist Church and appeared in good health, said the Rev. Dave Randlett, a senior associate pastor.

"He always looks up so you wouldn't know if he wasn't" feeling well, Randlett said. "He was very optimistic." He had no detail on Falwell's condition Tuesday.

"I really believe that the Pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians, ... the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this [terrorist attack] happen." Jerry Falwell, 700 Club, 2001-SEP-13.

Is it really too much to ask?

I abhor wishing death upon people, which makes me feel really bad that the first thing that crossed my mind when I read this thread title was "YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I hope he's suspended in a persistent vegetative state.

I won't wish him (or virtually anyone) any specific ill will. That said I won't mourn him for one second. The man is a fucking villain.

"I hope he's suspended in a persistent vegetative state"

It's been that way since I first heard of him.

What a shitbird that guy is. How much suffering of innocents has he caused, encouraged and endorsed? Don't answer that. I almost hope that he's right (sorta) and there is a hell, because if there is he'll be getting the full Heironymous Bosch treatment down there, and he richly deserves it.

Indeed. Normally I wouldn't so brazenly hope for a man to die, but Falwell has long had a place on the "special exemptions" list.

No ill will at all. I just think he should stay hooked up on machines and put on display at his Bible institute, kind of like a living Lenin's tomb. They could charge to visit/throw tomatoes/pray/pose with him.

Perhaps he'd breathe easier if he got rid of all that neck fat.

I remember when he was going on about the homo-secular humanists bringing on the terrorists and somebody said, "Ok, but who would you rather have sitting next to you on a hijacked plane, Jerry Falwell or Mark Bingham?"
