pace the terri schiavo mess, is the GOP's embrace of the religious right FINALLY about to come and bite them on the ass?

we should be so lucky, perhaps -- though i suspect that if this is so, this will likely be a case of "it'll make shit worse before shit gets better."

Well! I see our little friend here, Eisbär, is a little liberal with the concept of imitating Mr. Dirty Mouth!

I was surprised to hear my Mom say last night that she was "sick of the Bush boys" and that "if I'm ever in that state, unplug me," and etc. Which is what most people say, most people I can imagine, and a majority of people in the polls, etc. I'm very confused by why all the major media has been covering this as is there's significant public opinion on the side of keeping her alive. There's not.

The Republicans can rely on the support of the religious right no matter what they do; the religious right doesn't have the spine necessary to actually abstain from voting for Republicans. All the GOP has to do is occasionally bust out a little angry rhetoric about "secular humanists" or "activist judges" and the fundies are placated; they'll never grow the balls to turn their backs on the GOP, 'cause they're too afraid they'd drop off the cultural map without 'em and appear like the crazy-ass mountain hillbillies they are.

I hate that there are even polls out about whether or not she should be kept alive, and I hate that people are talking about those polls as if they are somehow important. As if it's the American public's fucking business.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I can't believe that this can help Jeb, right now. George seems to weasel his way out of everything. Long-term I think Republican politicians have accepted the devil's bargain they've made. They may rankle at this stuff occassionally, but they're a content bunch.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Maria, I agree that it's none of our business, but for that matter, neither is a woman's decision whether or not to have an abortion. It shouldn't be an issue, but it is now.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon. In politics, everything's up for grabs. If this at all damages Jeb "Pontius Pilate" (Hee hee) Bush's chances to be POTUS 2008, I'll be glad.

I strongly disagree with this. I don't think that they value legitimacy in the eyes of others.

actually, i don't think it's like that, more of like that they both hold many of the same values, only one group does so far more zealously than the other.

xpost

yeah, teeny's right. one has to put validity in the viewpoint and opinions of others in order for you to give a shit about how you appear.

With God on your side, you don't have to worry about your image.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

'tis a blunt way to put it, but yeah, that's essentially it

Not really - remember the neo-con's only courted them to give them that one extra demographic they needed to push themselves over the cusp. Prior to that your Christfucking/Cheeelderen quotient were strongly against voting at all due to the secular corruption of all politicians. A few more incidents like this and they could drop their support and/or the Republicans will start disowning them as they get more outrageous. The media will be on the lookout for more of these polarisers from now on as it's been a great success for them and the more we get the more strained things will become.

Here's hoping a 6 year old Priests daughter with massive doe-eyes and a large collection of cute retrospective pictures gets raped into a vegetative coma by a terriorist's hand-grenade clenching fist, leaving no living will, but a mother who is a recently outed Iranian Pro-choice drummer in a metal band who once had a conversation with her that she wouldn't want to be kept alive by no goddamn robotics.

Or maybe not.
