Hurrah! (Um, I think.)

UC Irvine’s Graduate School of Management has received a $30 million gift from philanthropist and entrepreneur Paul Merage – the largest single gift ever received by the university.

The gift will support the creation of endowed chairs that will facilitate the school’s ongoing recruitment of top faculty; provide fellowships to support the recruitment and retention of top graduate students from around the country; and initiate innovative research centered around business growth. In recognition of the gift, the Graduate School of Management will be renamed The Paul Merage School of Business.

---

Merage was the principal founder of Chef America, which – under his leadership – enjoyed a successful growth strategy through expansion of its product lines. In the early 1980s, he created and introduced Belgian Chef brand waffles to restaurants and Hot Pockets brand sandwiches to convenience and grocery stores. In 2002, he sold Chef America to Nestle in order to focus on his philanthropic interests.

They really are quite breath-taking.

I'm in awe that $30 million apparently does not take a financially-crippling chunk out of the Hot Pockets® fortune.

Why aren't there any vegetarian Hot Pockets? How hard would it be? There might be a brocolli and cheese one, but I'm not sure, and that sounds gross anyways.

More meat = more grease inside the yummy pastry shell.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

theyre all tremendous. Im surprised there isnt a thread about them right now, like the eggos and iced coffee.

I always get the Lean Pockets because i feel they're not as artery-clogging. my fav is prob the chicken fajita. the breakfast ones are awesome too, as are the croissant pockets.

they sell like, half pound Hot POckets in gas sations.

Would a falafel and hummus Hot Pocket be gross or yummers?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think gross.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, i'd eat it.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem would be when you microwaved it the hummus would get it hot, and really the hummus should be room temp.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

falAWESOME

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i see cheeseburger ones now.

charleston charge (chaki), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

how about something with portobello mushrooms and peppers, maybe some cheese?

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Morningstar should jump on this market opportunity post-haste! They could call them NOT POCKETS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

they have a four-cheese one! I've had it, it's a delighful exercise in grease.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Back to the original topic:

That's pretty OC!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Hot Pockets, but I don't eat them anymore - too much saturated fat.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's pretty OC!

Astoundingly so.

My Hot Pockets 'phase' was some years ago.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They should name each endowed chair after a variety of hot pocket: Meatballs & Mozzarella, etc.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

a falafel and hummus pocket would be cool, except that yeah, the hummus would get too hot. But i would prob eat it anyway. the crust could be made out of pita-like material. they could expand to the growing doner/kabab/shawarma/gyros market too.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hell, you could put dogshit and cheese in there and i'd eat it.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Is shit vegan?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, like placenta.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the belgian brand placenta and dogshit hot pockets school of business

BBQ Hot Pockets are really good, especially if they are microwaved a little bit too long and the ends of the HP kind of harden and the leaked-out bbq sauce caramelizes around it.

adam (adam), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

seven years pass...

i just had the bbq chicken lean pocket with pretzel bread. it was... really sweet. i think i'll stick to the pizza ones.
