Pat Buchanan cut short an appearance Thursday after a student threw salad dressing on him.

KALAMAZOO, Michigan (AP) -- Commentator and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan cut short an appearance after an opponent of his conservative views doused him with salad dressing.

"Stop the bigotry!" the demonstrator shouted as he hurled the liquid Thursday night during the program at Western Michigan University. The incident came just two days after another noted conservative, William Kristol, was struck by a pie during an appearance at a college in Indiana.

After he was hit, Buchanan cut short his question-and-answer session with the audience, saying, "Thank you all for coming, but I'm going to have to get my hair washed."

The demonstrator, identified by authorities as a 24-year-old student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, was arrested and faces a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace. He was released on a $100 cash bond, pending his April 14 arraignment.

"He could have faced a felony assault charge, but Pat Buchanan decided to not press that charge," university spokesman Matt Kurz said.

Buchanan's visit had evoked controversy on campus because it fell on the birthday of the late Mexican-American labor leader Cesar Chavez. Buchanan favors tighter controls on immigration.

Kristol, editor of the influential conservative magazine The Weekly Standard and former chief of staff to Vice President Quayle, was splattered by a student during a speech Tuesday at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana.

Members of the audience at the Quaker college jeered the student, then applauded as Kristol wiped the pie from his face and said, "Just let me finish this point." Kristol then completed his speech and took questions from the audience.

The student, who was not immediately identified, was suspended and could face expulsion following a disciplinary review, Earlham Provost Len Clark said Wednesday.

Clark also issued a written apology complimenting Kristol for his "graciousness."

The sad thing is that in this day and age, Pat is starting to sound like a moderate.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I know. I used to think he was a little nazi .. (He always reminded me of Colonel Hochstetter) but the things he says lately when he's criticizing the Republicans actually make him sound sensible. And that scares me.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:52 (nineteen years ago) link

the man believes what he believes, knows a shitload about politics. i agree, he is more a moderate these days, as scary as that sounds.

just because you dont agree with him (and please believe, i dont either) doesnt mean you get to be as disrespectful as you want to be. this is why democrats lose elections: complete jerk off college students who think their idiotic pranks count as political dialouge.

JD from CDepot, Friday, 1 April 2005 14:56 (nineteen years ago) link

i disagree.

cntfce., Friday, 1 April 2005 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

wow, when you put it that way, i guess i must change my whole line of reasoning.

JD from CDepot, Friday, 1 April 2005 15:06 (nineteen years ago) link

College students have always been annoying jerk-offs, but democrats haven't always lost elections. Hence, you are wrong.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Democrats lose elections because of disrespectful college kids who throw salad dressing on a political leader who admires Hitler, believes that gays deserve AIDS, believes dishwashers are more responsible for female lib than feminists, and believes Martin Luther King Jr was a fraud?? Who knew?!

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

david horowitz is 100x the dick that pat buchanan is. it is insanely easy to get david horowitz mad. he's like the hstencil of right-wing politics.

anyway, to his credit, pat seemed to handle this pretty gracefully.

i think the "this is why democrats [x]" comments are a red herring, but yeah, this was a dumb thing to do.

ive never said i agreed with him! or with any of the millions of people who watch Fox News because its fair and balanced! but sadly, these days its what you see, not any sort of logical well-thought out argument, serve the servents etc.

of course, pat buchannan is on the fringe of the republican party now, and im not saying that THIS particular action will have any real effect on anything.

and democrats have consistently lost elections (with the exception of clinton and carter) since a democratic president signed the civil rights act in 1964.

JD from CDepot, Friday, 1 April 2005 15:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahah, JD, I read that as "but SALAD, these days its what you see..." And yes, of course, I understand you don't agree with him. I just think that as both a dyke and a feminist, my issues with PB are overwhelmingly personal so to see him sitting in a pile of semen-looking sludge, well, I kind of get a little too excited. (and not in a fun way, of course.)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:20 (nineteen years ago) link

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:24 (nineteen years ago) link

sure, i understand, and maybe a few years ago i would have found it funny too, but now i just can't.

yes politics are personal, but more importantly they are about comprimise. the sign of any good political decision is that both sides walk away mildly unhappy (the quote is something like that, i think). but for people who are naturally liberal like you and I it seems disgusting that we would have to comprimise anything with someone who says such vicious and disgusting things.

but the only reason he has power is because in the bedrooms and dinning rooms of america there are millions who think even worse things. many of them are family. i know i can count my parents amongst the anti gay bush supporters, my mom once visited maine just to see where barbra bush vacationed. but should I smear their cars with shit and egg their houses? no, i allow them their opinions, however backward, and do my best to promote and support what i see to be right, because that is the idiotic justice of america.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." HL Mencken

JD from CDepot, Friday, 1 April 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think Pat is a moderate. I just think his brand of morally authoritarian Catholic jingoism is sometimes at odds with the Mammon worshipping plutocrats in the Bush administration. A Buchannan administration would justify it's tyranny as protecting American families from Jewish 'sodomites' as opposed to the Bushes who are just in it for the money. Pat's 'patriotism' and his brand of legalism (like Scalia's a product of the study of years of Canon law and of thinkers like Aquinas) will make him always skeptical about liberalizing immigration whereas Bush, as the ex-governor of a border state, knows that you can't get business done cheaply without a large pool of easily intimidated, poor immigrants.

His anti-war stances are the product of a mixture of anti-semitism and old-fashioned isolationism. He wrote a fascinating article during the Clinton administration casting doubt on NAFTA and pointing out that the Republican party for most of its history was a high-tariff party to protect maufacturing and labor at home.

He may be a throw-back, Father Coughlin type, but I cannot agree that the best way to resist him and his ideas is through sophomoric acts of violence or puerile attempts at political theory. His ideas can be resisted and anything that might remotely be perceived by his base as making him a martyr should be avoided. They love that shit. Pat graciously deferred his opportunity to press charges, which makes him look magnanimous to his people, so in terms of hearts and minds, I think this stuff actually backfires.

It's too bad that hitting someone with salad dressing is far more dangerous, more insidious, and more hateful than covering up the torture of thousands of detainees. Ask anyone. I haven't looked, but I'm guessing the Corner will have more lines of text devoted to the salad dressing than to the torture reports. Or anything else really important.

buchanan was against the invasion of iraq, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Buchanan's views on foreign policy bear more resemblance to leftist takes than the current tides on the right, if only because he has some recognition of how our clumsier uses of American power wind up doing us more harm than good. And while his social and domestic views haven't significantly changed (I don't think), they've gotten overshadowed by those more let's say "administrative" kinds of opinions; the guy is less and less a politician and more and more just a commentator -- and one with more nuanced historical knowledge of how administrations work than firebrand social shit-to-say -- and that puts him in a position that's kind of strikingly independent, maybe even "apolotical."

I'm glad kids on the right haven't gotten into pranking, cuz I'd be really steamed if someone did this to Eleanor Clift.
