Taco Bell, now with less slavery

So sas Eric Schlosser.

Respect to the farm workers. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know that Taco Bell and its pimp daddy Yum Brands had, until recently, such a, what, nuanced view of indentured servitude. Maybe I guess it's safest to just assume that all megacorp-type companies are pro-slavery unless they explicitly say otherwise. Also makes me want some kind of explicit "not picked by slaves" label on my store-bought produce. Is that too much to ask? They have all these rules about whether or not they can call something "organic," surely they could certify their provenance re: slavery or not.

But anyway, 7 layers without guilt. Have one.

But the slavery is what made the tacos taste so GOOOOOOOOD!

(Seriously, this type of thing makes me want to stop being so lazy and cook.)

The company's attitude gradually changed as the boycott gained support not only from students, but also from the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the National Council of Churches, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights and former President Jimmy Carter, among others.

Big respect to the churches involved--my friend is a minister in the PUSA church and when he married me and my husband he was telling us how involved he and his congregation were in spreading the word about this issue. Unfortunately liberal christian activism doesn't seem to get as much press as the other kind. :(
