who actually owns/runs ilxor.com?

Serious question. I've been an occasional poster to ILM and ILE for a couple of years now. It occurred to me that there's not one specific moderator or owner that I associate with these boards. All I know is that ilxor.com is an offshoot of Freaky Trigger.

So: how did this board start? Who runs it? Who keeps it going? Is there a prior discussion that deals with this?

http://ilx.p3r.net/faq.php?board=1 should answer your questions, Mike.

ILM started by Tom E [Freaky Trigger/ NYLPM] in August 2000, as a forum for discussing music.

Along came FT/ NYLPM readers plus some ex Alt.Music.Alternative users.

ILE started in June 2001.

actually, the faq doesn't exactly answer this question. who owns the domain? who owns the server on which the site is hosted?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'm still the domain owner (bwah hah hah), unless someone took care of reregistering the domain w/out my knowledge (you cheeky monkeys).

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the FAQ says that David Raposa owns the domain. I was just wondering who's in charge. It was quite helpful.

mike a, Friday, 8 April 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew owns the server, right?

yes it does:

I love ILx, Who Should I Thank?
You should thank (and so should I):
- Phil Greenspun, for providing server and software free in the first place.
- Andrew Gerrand, for providing server space in the second place.
- Graham P, for coding the new ILX.
- Mark S, Mike Daddino and Sean for their work categorising and preserving old threads.
- David Raposa, for registering our new domain name.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew owns the server. Alan T and Mr. Noodles own the development effort.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sym Sym (sym), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If you are looking for a board with a clearly-defined owner and authority figure this the wrong tree up which to bark!

hey dont forget that everyone who donated for the server owns a tiny piece of ilx too....

so its sort of a cooperatvie, although im guessing andrew and the mods put most time/money/effort into it. althoguh i dont know anythign about it.

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No, we don't. It was made clear that donations were just donations, they'd go towards a machine that would host the server for a while then become Andrew's machine to do with as he sees fit. If he shut the thing down tomorrow, he's still own that machine.

Which was the right way to do things, no argument.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX stock up 14.4% in March, stockholders' meeting scheduled for April Fool's Day never materialized.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 9 April 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

well ok, i worded that clumsily, i meant that lots of people have invested resources into ILX, and as such, have made some sort of contribution to its running at some time or other. in other words, i dont really know what i am saying. Yeah we definately dont "own" anything, thats true. I would never think that i somehow should see a return of my paltry donation if/when disappeared

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 9 April 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

For historical accuracy, ILE was started by erstwhile poster DG.

I tend to think of Andrew as 'in charge' of ILX if only because we run on his server. But if he decided tomorrow for whatever reason that that could no longer be the case I think the chances of the board itself disappearing are pretty slim. Its owned by the community, innit?

I still think of Tom as having some kind of big say in the running of the boards even if he'd until recently stopped posting and has, as far as I know, stepped out of the admin side of things altogether.

Mods are just ordinary posters like myself who have been around for a while and are friendly with/trusted by the powers that be.

Or at least, that's the party line. This is the REAL truth. Gaze upon its hideous visage:

What was the first post to ILM?

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The very first thread

I was poster number five and I guess by default am now the longest standing regular after Tom, since both Josh and Robin are in retirement here at least and I've not seen Rener around for a bit (that is her, isn't it?).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

There should be an ILx entry on Wikipedia.org, for future generations

no

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew and The Mods would be a good ILX band name- all the lyrics would be pulled from various threads, and at live shows the audience could decide on the spot if each song was a Classic or a Dud.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

no

Ok

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone did try to create a Wikipedia entry for ILX, it would probably lead to a big deletion fight, with all the old Wikipedia hands going "yet another internet messageboard? it's not encyclopaedic! Delete!"
